a quick search on the most recent posts will see you are not alone with updating CC.
have you tried the suggestions put forward in those other threads, namely, uninstall, delete CC Program Files folder, reboot PC, re-install.
get the new version from the Builds page, after installation, go to the Options > About page and hit the blue License button to type in your key to make the Free version a Pro version.

Okay I will try these suggestions. I Did search the forum for others having the same problem;
But, I didn't see anything related to Windows Vista & CCleaner.
I'm a computer tech (IBM 28 years) and I understand that current sw pkgs today are not necessarily built
to deal with an OS that are discontinued and not supported by Microsoft, ie XP and Vista.
I did see some advice re: your suggestions; but it pertained to Windows 10, so I skipped it.
I will give all this a try, and let you know.
Just curious, are Windows 7 users having trouble with this as well?
Also, My primary computers run Ubuntu-Linux.
Does CCleaner.exe come in a version useful for Linux or is CCleaner not necessary for Linux OS,
just like most Anti-virus pkgs are also not necessary for Linux?
UPDATE: I downloaded the 5.33.6162 FREE version.
I uninstalled CCleaner and deleted the folder and contents.
I opened the free version, and went to the Options->About page and entered my license numbers and
it instantly gave me the Professional version of 5.33.6162.
no, there is no Linux version of CC and that OS would still accumulate junk files.
yes, Linux, just as with any OS, will need AV protection.
it is a fallacy, stated often enough that is has acquired a level of urban legend, that Macs and all other Linux distros do not need AV software.
it comes down to simple mathematics. if these virus-creating-evil-retards spend weeks creating their payloads, why spend that effort to only infect 3% of the global PC's when they can target 97% much more easily.
