CCleaner killed my computer

Hi. I used CCleaner on one of my computers roughly last week-ish, in an effort to speed up my computer on startup, but what it did was kill my wifi, sound, and I can't install ANYTHING on my computer now. I feel like I have to reinstall Windows again. What can I do? Thank you.

What exactly did you run on it? Did you run the registry cleaner?

What version of windows do you run?

I ran the most recent version of CCLeaner, and I use Windows 7. And yes, I think I did run the registry cleaner, IIRC.

Did you also delete anything in the Tools>Startup section?

No, not as far as I know.

Did you make a backup of the things you deleted when offered the chance to do so by ccleaner ?

Have you tried system restore to a time before you used ccleaner ?

What antivirus do you use and are your scans up to date and clean?

What problems were you having in order to make you try to use something (ccleaner) to 'fix' it?

1) I don't recall it asking me.

2) Doesn't work.

3) Norton Security Suite.

4) The time it took for my computer to start up was very slow.

Can you post some error messages you're getting? How exactly you can't install anything?

As hazelnut asked, have you scanned your PC for viruses/malware?

Have you had any bluescreens?

I am trying to get my wifi back up, but it won't let me install ANYTHING. It just gives me a message that says it can't install.

Yes, nothing came up, but even the anti-virus software won't work due to the connection being cut off.

And no, no bluescreens. I'm not getting any error messages.

Since you are having a problem with Internet Connection. I suggest that go to Device Manager and uninstall the network adapter but, make sure NOT to check 'Delete the driver software for this device' (a snapshot is attached). After uninstalling the network adapter, scan for hardware changes and it'll reinstall the network adapter.

There is no way that CCleaner's Registry Cleaner can harm Windows. Even by deleting all the Startup entries, there is no harm to Windows. CCleaner is a very safe program.

I suggest that install Auslogics Registry Cleaner and run it.

I'll try that. But as I said, it may not install as my computer won't let me install ANYTHING there.

That can be the problem with INSTALLING software.

Normally I expect to bypass that problem altogether by use of a PORTABLE version.

You are probably in luck with either

This is really weird.

You said you have a Windows 7 system...right? is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Create another user account with Administrator rights. and see if it solves the problem.

I feel you are having a problem with User's Administrator rights.

I suggest that install Auslogics Registry Cleaner and run it.

That is rather bad advice IMO

64-bit. I'll see what I can do about the new account thing. Man, this is quite a quandary here....

This program runs with Administrator rights ONLY. This way atleast you can find out if there is an issue with User's Administrator rights. :)

BTW all the name brand registry cleaner programs like this one, Ace Utilities and Registry First Aid runs in Administrator mode.

You can reset Windows Security settings to its defaults by using the command listed here:

Run Command Prompt as Administrator

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose

I always create a system image before I test a new program or atleast creates a backup of registry hives.

I wish you good luck travelingjg.

The above does not work. It says that I do not have sufficient permissions to run it. And I ran the Auslogics thing- doesn't work.

Regarding the system restore as well, it gives me the following message: "A volume shadow copy service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the application event log for more info. (0x80042302)"
