CCleaner is deleting passwords in Firefox and Thunderbird

For the past few days, CCleaner seems to be deleting the passwords stored in Firefox browser and Thunderbird email. I think it is being done by Maintenance Health Check running under Scheduling. That is supposed to run every two weeks; today it has run twice that I know of, and each time my passwords were gone afterwards (I re-entered some manually after the first time).

It was working fine before (no passwords deleted), and then a few days ago I tried setting up some customized schedules. The passwords started being deleted, so I deleted the customized schedules, but the passwords are still being deleted.

Under Custom Clean > Browser and Custom Clean > Thunderbird, “Saved Passwords” is NOT checked.

How can I stop this from happening? Thank you!

Are you using the default schedule (you mention the two weeks which is in the default) or did you setup a schedule?

Right now I think I am just using the default schedule. I did set up two others to see how they worked, but after my passwords started being deleted I deleted the schedules that I had set up. I would like to be just using the default schedule. I also tried “repair” in the uninstall process in Windows 11, but that did not fix the problem.

I notice that the default schedule says it will run every 2 weeks on Sunday at 7 pm. Today (Sunday), it ran around 11 am in the morning, and afterwards my passwords were gone. This evening, I noticed that the passwords that I had re-entered were gone again, and I checked, and the schedule said that it had run at 9:51 pm. So it ran at least twice today (and I think at least once yesterday, on Saturday).

The default uses healthcheck, so definitely create your own that uses custom clean (it’s a choice when setting them up) .

Have you setup cookies to save in custom clean’s configure button? Is sessions checked under Thunderbird and Firefox, that sometimes wipes passwords

Is it the passwords gone or you’re logged out?

Okay, I have set up a custom schedule using Custom Clean, and I have turned off the default using Health Check.

I have not set up cookies to save – I didn’t realize that was an option. “Sessions” was NOT checked for either Firefox or Thunderbird.

The passwords were gone. When I looked in Firefox to see the saved passwords, there were none (after I re-entered them, they were listed there). When I opened Thunderbird, it asked me for passwords for all my emails, which it only does during initial set-up. After I entered them, it did not ask again (until they all disappeared again).

So, to be clear, running Health Check on the scheduler will delete my passwords? Because when I run it from the dashboard, it doesn’t do that.

Aha. Thank you – good to know. Do you know if CCleaner considers this to be a bug? Is there a way to choose what the scheduled jobs do?

So far so good – my passwords are still here :slight_smile:

And set your custom clean tabs to control (as you said you had so just continue that) Do your cookies to keep too for those sites you want to stay logged into

Okay - thank you very much. (It does seem strange to me that the recommended default behavior of a scheduled job is to wipe out saved passwords. I would think that would surprise a lot of people … it surprised me!)
