CCleaner installation hangs on Windows 7 system with IE 11

Hi all,

This is a bug report affecting CCleaner (and probably current versions of all other Piriform products), but for which the cause does *not* lie with CCleaner.

Basically, I've narrowed it down to a (probably) buggy version of wininet.dll that ships with Internet Explorer 11, which I think your software use (or has a wrapper that does). It affects the installation of Piriform products, which then hangs at "Checking system and updates". This Microsoft bug seems to also affects other software (that I encountered: Adobe's Shockwave installer, the installer of the open-source ODF addin for Office), which load wininet.dll and when working correctly download components/check lastest product version/etc.

System: Windows 7 x86 SP1

CCleaner version: 4.09.4471 (x86)

IE11 version: Unknown (didn't note before uninstalling)

Sorry, I don't have the version numbers for IE11/Wininet.dll, but it's worth checking out to reproduce the problem. I will, but only once I'm done building those systems.

The story behind: I was in the process of building a few systems, and for the first one at some point towards the end I started having software that hangs at installation: one, then another, then a few more. Left it aside (since almost finished) and started with the second system, for which everything installed properly. For the third system, and again for the same apps as for the first system, I get installations that hang, again at the same places. Comparing the systems together, I notice that 1st & 3rd systems had been updated with IE11, while the 2nd was updated with IE10 (in Windows Update, at some point you get to choose which of the two version to install for a fresh Windows 7 install). Uninstall IE11 update from 3rd system, and voilĂ , those software that used to hang at installation now install properly.

no problem here with win 7 x86/IE11

No problem here either with Win 7 x64/IE11. What about if you deselect "check for software updates" in installation dialog?.

Hi johnwait,

Can you please confirm that you are using the latest CCleaner installers?

Thanks

MrT

I'm having the exact same problem with windows 8.1 x64 with IE 11. Both CCleaner and Recuva hang up on the checking system for updates section of the install. Is there a solution to this?
