Sorry if this is in the wrong section, staff, feel free to move it.
My PC has been lagging quite a bit lately. I decided it was time to get everything sorted. I deleted all of my unwanted files, uninstalled lots of programs which were lagging my PC, defragged my hard drive and then I installed CCleaner. I'd heard some good reviews about it. After I ran the program with cleaned up all of my files, I restarted my PC and now it is saying that my Windows XP is not genuine.
It was a completely legitimate version of Windows (Windows XP Pro SP3 if it matters) but now it's 'non genuine'. Surely CCleaner has deleted a file or edited my registry and messed up my license.
Did you make a backup of the registry when offered the chance to do so by CCleaner?
Did XP pro come pre-installed on the computer or did you install it from a disk?
Never heard of ccleaner making a genuine Windows licence 'fake' before.
You may have to contact Microsoft in your country to get it sorted.
No, I didn't make a registry backup (which was stupid of me) but yes, when I bought my PC, it came pre installed with Windows XP. I'll try the repair disc and report back.
I'd recommend trying a recent System Restore Point first as it's a possible quick and simple solution, and using a repair disc will probably result into a lengthy format and reinstall.
