i'm wiping free space but its taking up space how does this work?

It has to fill up all free space to wipe it.

Does it automatically free the space it takes in the end? Are there any issues I should be aware of?

It frees up the space at the end if left alone! If you cancel it you run the risk of it not removing the files it creates to fill up the freespace.

You can search and browse the forums about other issues.

And do note it isn't something to run all the time since it can wear out a hard disk, it's best used when wanting to sell off or donate a computer.
