Ccleaner has stopped working - Vista 32-bit

Hi, I am a new poster. I have been using Ccleaner for years and have always been pleased with it. I noticed some time ago that when I tried to run it, it woyls open, but when I tried to clean, I would get a window indicating an error had occured. I can run the "analyze" option successfully, but when I try to clean I get the error. My security scanner is Microsoft Security Essentials, which has worked with Ccleaner for years. Other than normal Microsoft WIndows Updates, I haven't much with the system. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, to no avail. I even went back and installed 4.19, also to no avail. The error I get is as follows:

in the progress bar along the top, what stage does it say it is cleaning when it crashes?

have you tried running CC with the PC in Safe Mode to see if it completes?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I tried it again and it stopped an 28%. It will still let me do the "analyze", but not the "clean". I haven't tried in safe mode - but I will today and post back.

Please run ccleaner in debug mode with the command line swith /debug and post the resulting log to this thread

Hello again. I was playing around with what Ccleaner actually cleans - checking/unchecking items - then re-running. it turns out that it works fine as long as I don't check the box for Firefox Internet History. it is working now that I have unchecked this item. Not sure why, but I have already set Forefox to "forget" history, so it i no problem.

end/SAS

I went back and ran Ccleaner with the /debug feature and here are the results:

Sounds like you are right anout the one to uncheck. As far as why it's "barfing" on that entry, it usually is a symptom of Firefox not exiting entirely.

After you exit firefox do you see any errant Firefox processes in the processes tab of task manager?

Edit:

This can also be caused by a corrupt history database, iirc.

might be time to create a new Firefox profile.

Again, thanks for the useful, prompt replies to my issue. I have not noticed, recently, any issues with Firefox exiting nicely. There have been several "security updates" in Mozilla recently. I will check the next time I exit Firefox to see if there are any processes left running. I had not thought about a new profile in Firefox - but I will look into how to do that.

Make sure you backup your Firefox bookmarks first, a couple of ways to do it for later restoration:

* https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer

* https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/restore-bookmarks-from-backup-or-move-them

Also doesn't the mozilla update service run in the background?
