ccleaner freezes when updating one drive software (“installation not started”). I can’t cancel or remove tthe attempted update. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Try restarting One Drive.
Click the OneDrive icon in the System Tray and select ‘Close OneDrive’ or ‘Exit’, then go to the Start menu and reopen OneDrive.
Alternatively, or if restarting OneDrive hasn’t worked, then do a ‘Restart’ of your computer; not a ‘Shut Down’ but a ‘Restart’.
If that still hasn’t finished the update then try updating OneDrive by using ‘Check for Updates’ in Windows Update, or from within OneDrive itself. You can find instructions online if needed.
If using ‘Check for Updates’ then make sure that you have ‘Receive updates for other Microsoft products’ selected in the Advanced options (it’s usually a good idea to have it on always) this is from Win 11 but it’s similar in Win 10:
Personally I never let CCleaner, or anything else. try to update any software or drivers.
You only have to read the posts here to know that, like any updaters, the ones in CCleaner can make mistakes, or can fail to complete an update.
In the case of drivers they can sometimes get updated to a new version that isn’t even meant for and doesn’t work on your machine at all, we see a number of posts where that has happened and the machine has stopped working properly.
The updater only knows that a new driver version is available, it doesn’t know if it will suit your machine or not.
(There is also the question of why try to update a driver that is working fine? If it aint broke then don’t try to fix it).
If I even look at what software CCleaner has found to update then I take note of it and then check if it’s correct then do the update from the app or from it’s website.
Unless you have disabled Automatic Updating for some reason then Windows takes care itself of any updates that Windows needs, there is no need for CCleaner to be trying to do it.
