Hello, new here. Does anyone know if Ccleaner works on the new advanced format drives that are sold today?
My Seagate has 512 bytes per sector, which is advanced format. CC works fine.
Okay, thanks.
From what little I know about Advanced Format it's more the op sys that's important than the application. XP doesn't support AF, so you may need some emulation utility, Vista is better and Win7 best, but not perfect (look at http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2011/04/26/using-4k-sector-and-advanced-format-drives-in-windows-hotfix-and-support-info-for-windows-server-2008-r2-and-windows-7.aspx).
AF drive controllers are supposed to offer 512-byte sector emulation so that file systems can see what they're used to seeing. CC uses Windows APIs so should run as usual.
Kroozer, do you mean that you have an AF drive? My drive (Retreated Format, is that the opposite of Advanced?) has 512-byte sectors too, but is hardly cutting edge. How does anyone know they have an AF drive?
How does anyone know they have an AF drive?
Augeas, thanks for the reply and link cos it forced me to search further. The topic also appears on a Seagate forum with no conclusion.
Although Seagate provides many pages on the subject, I can't find anything that states AF is in general production. I was under the impression that Advanced Format was here now, that the latest Cudas (incl. mine) were AF, but it appears it's in transition -- We ain't all there yet.* If we were, vendors would be waving flags and flying balloons.
*Apparently Momentus disk drives released in 2011 have the Advanced Format, so we need to hear from a CC user who owns one.
Thanks for the input. Indeed, i have had a difficult time researching this new technology. I have read that people are having problems with the new WD scorpio
drives, as related to win7, which WD states it was designed for, and future OS. On XP one must use an "alignment" tool to optimize performance and such.
WD is phasing out std. format, so the old tech is more expensive. I can buy a AF drive of same make and model for $30 or less than the std. version format.
thats why i started this post, as there is little info on this subject as of yet. Because of the new sector size, and the way OS uses it, got me thinking about certian
utillities, such as CC not working properly. Thanks again
