CCleaner fails manual cleaning

CCleaner is not performing the manual cleaning anymore.

Every time I try it, I get this error message.

Did it work okay the last time you used it?

If it was okay the last time you used it, was it the same version?

Were you cleaning the registry or was it just a 'normal' clean?

What anti-virus do you use?

I use GData Internet Security 2012.

There's no error message during the auto cleaning at Windows logon. The registry cleaning is OK too. The problem is only when I try to do a "normal" cleaning.

I was on I trip, so I don't know exactly when it started, but I'm sure it was already happening in build 1688.

Can you just disable G-Data as a test and try a clean then?

Do you have automatically check for updates ticked in ccleaner?

If so can you try unticking that, rebooting, and trying a clean again.

Same happens in older Webroot and AVG, and Kaspersky can be a pain too. Just disable the anti-virus when you clean- or configure it to accept CCleaner access to private/personal folders.

The worst case would be uninstalll the Anti-Virus, run CCleaner, re-install Anti-virus and hopefully its' automatic program permissions will pick on CCleaner being legit- what I did with Kaspersky 2009, 2010, 2011- till I changed Antivirus.

I disabled GData and it worked.

I enabled GData again, removed CCleaner 17.1689 and reinstalled version 16.1666, but the error persists.

That's strange. I've been using GData for two years and I never had to configure it to accept CCleaner... and the folders/files I set to be cleaned/excluded are the same I've been cleaning since forever.

I have another PC with GData and CCleaner is set to clean the same folders and it works fine. I think that's not the problem, because when I reinstalled version 16.1666 I didn't set any folders to be cleaned and I got the error.

Possibly strange - or possibly reasonable.

Threats evolve, and countermeasures try to catch up.

GData may have recognized that they were failing to protect files from deletion by malware,

and they could have over-tweaked your protection on your specific system and crippled CCleaner.

Yes as Alan says it looks like GData is now 'over protecting' you and is maybe preventing ccleaner deletion of certain files on that particular pc.

There must be a certain configuration on that pc that is slightly different to your other one. Is that other pc also Win 7 64bit Ultimate?

Something else to try to see if it helps:

1. Open CCleaner and go into: 'Options->Exclude'

2. Exclude folder locations of GData located in: Application Data, Program Files, etc

3. Exclude registry settings locations of GData, located in: HKCU and HKLM

Please, take a look at this:

- make sure Firefox, Thunderbird and Chrome are closed before analyzing/cleaning

or

- switch to English language until next release

Now I know what's causing the error. It's CCleaner and Firefox running at the same time.

I've been using Avant Browser for years. It's always been based on IExplorer, but now Avant Browser also includes Firefox and Chrome rendering engines. Firefox and Chrome must be closed when you run CCleanear.

CCleanear asks me if I want to close Chrome before continuing, but for some reason it doesn't do the same with Firefox .

It will if you follow the developer's suggestion right above you, and they plan for this to be fixed in the next version
