CCleaner deleted my icons

So I let CCleaner clean my desktop shortcuts and got this terrible issue:

WHXbA.png

I've tried refreshing, deleting the icon cache, using System Restore, deleting icons and re-adding them, all to no avail.

I'm using the latest version of CCleaner on Windows 7 64-bit SP1.

That is what happened to me when I deleted the Icon Cache.

For some reason my XP Home edition was broken in that it failed to rebuild the cache.

Perhaps Windows 7 can also be broken.

Maybe CCleaner just hates games!

I was unable to recreate this on my win7 pro x64

Hi lucasbytegenius, and welcome to the forum.

I'm an XP man, so can't check this one out myself, but there does appear to be a solution here, and it is for 64 bit Win7 ...

The only proviso is you will have to register to access the reg file fix shown.

I wouldn't normally link folk to unknown reg fixes, but that is a very respectable forum, and I don't doubt that the reg files are exactly what they say they are.

If you're unsure, then open a new topic as you will be registered, and ask the question, referring to the page on their forum which I've linked you to above.

And also maybe think about using this to back up your registry daily. Registry back ups can be worth their weight in gold.

ERUNTgui: (Win7 X64 compatible portable version)

This is easy to set up to make a back up of your registry once per day at first boot, and can be set to keep a rolling back up of "X" number of days. Just as an example, mine is set to keep a rolling back up of the last 3 days.

You might get a different, or better suggestion for a fix, but I feel it's probably gonna be a registry one, either directly or via Win7's maintenance/repair features, about which I know absolutely nothing.

Hope that helps.

EDIT: Some more info and discussion on ERUNTgui here ...

Recreate the Icon-Cache file by deleting it

  1. Show Hidden files & folders. Delete the hidden file C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Iconcache.db
  2. Right click the task bar and Start the Task Manager/Processes tab. End the explorer.exe task (Or else it will create a faulty file during logoff/restart) All icons and the Start button disappear.
  3. Now press CTRL+ALT+DEL start Task Manager File/New Task (Run) and type explorer.exe and press enter. Or restart the computer.
  4. When the Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) starts again, it will rebuild the correct Icon-Cache file. And all of your icons will return.

Edit: If the path is different in Win 7, you may be able to start/Run/%AppData% & hit enter key, & find it that way.

Also, if you prefer, try the Microsoft Fix It for this problem -> http://support.micro...r_windows/en-us

He already tried resetting the icon cache ;)

How about the MS fix-it?

To add another step to what Super Fast wrote about end tasking Explorer.exe is to restart your computer and see if that may help.

You're runnign windows 7, you might benefit from SFC /scannow
