Ccleaner causes Windows 10 Start button stop working

JeremyGNJ

This thread is only about the start menu issue.

Please talk about your many issues in your own thread .

Is there anyone actually taking this thread seriously or has it been largely ignored by everyone including the developers?

I ask this because I don't see too much happening by way of Q & A or general discussion, news or feedback on this topic.

To add to our smarts pool I took time to do a full clean win 10 system rebuild, I imaged the drive then installed cCleaner

I then unchecked the option boxes for MUI Cache, & Start Menu Order, the system, plus cCleaner performed flawlessly.

I then reinstated the option boxes for MUI Cache, & Start Menu Order, and reran cCleaner the problem was replicated

I ran out of time to find out which one is the culprit MUI Cache or Start Menu Order are these options being investigated

Anyone want to explain those options in detail, what they affect, why they're there why they are default & when to disable

Kind Regards

rest assured the Devs would have read these posts.

they just don't usually respond, very rarely in fact, unless more info is requested by them.

but in a nutshell, don't clean the registry with CC (or anything else for that matter) until Windows 10 settles down with the Builds and CC has a chance to catch-up.

and as has been stated already in previous posts and in other threads, even though CC's reg cleaner is deemed to be one of the least aggressive, any playing around with the registry is dangerous.

the good news for others is that you have identified to two culprits causing this reaction of cleaning the registry.

Hi

For those interested after putting a new Win 10 enterprise image on my system and deselecting both "MUI Cache" plus "Start Menu Ordering" option in the registry section of cCleaner ir worked flawlessly for over 3 months

Just for the hell of it I re-select both items & presto when I run cCleaner my start menu was wrecked. I have done no further work to isolate which one it is.suffice to say it is one or the other or both so I deselect, & re-image

System is up & running does anyone else want to have a poke at this? Should the developer deselect those options by default & invoke a caveat emptor for those wishing to experiment with them on their windows 10 Box?

Good topic. My issue definitely started after I ran the "Cleaner" section (no the Registry section). The comments I've seen here about being able to run without issue was based on unchecking Start Menu Ordering and MUI Cache under Registry.

So does running the "Cleaner" section also run Registry? I don't see an option to use the "Cleaner" section but uncheck Start Menu Ordering and MUI Cache options under that section. Just seems like there is a disconnect here. Some option(s) within the "Cleaner" section must be causing this issue on Windows 10 machines.

Apprehensive about running "Cleaner" section again for fear of losing my start menu. Suggestions?

Thank you!

At the pace Win10 is updated and changing I personally would not attempt to clean the registry in that OS.

@cherubim,

the posts above yours are only dealing with the registry cleaning side of CC.

and those two options for Start Menu Ordering and MUI Cache are only in that section.

normal use of CC to clean Windows is not effected, or covered, in this topic.

running the 'cleaner' section does not run the registry section.

I've never had CC cause any downsides by simply running the 'cleaner' side of things, and although I can't 100% be sure I am inclined to blame it though when using the registry cleaner.

it never broke the PC but a few little things started to act abnormally. but that's the side effect when running any reg cleaner, and to be fair, I did go a little too aggressive so the onus is always on the user.
