CC 'fixes' corrupted Yahoo displays - HELP!

Following a first-ever CC (version 2.18.0.878) run with a brutal 'dump practically everything' approach on daughter's old and super-slow Del desktop w/XP Home SP 2 OS, it largely solved her pc's tortoise performance, but left a weird problem I've been unable to solve despite restoring her registry to pre-CC state. Following screenshots are unique to just her current Yahoo interface, no similar problem with other web pages:

Yahoo home page display

Yahoo Mail display

Oops...forum doesn't allow "dynamic images" so guess folks will have to click on the links instead...sorry (newbie here).

Problem is common to both her IE and FF browsers, and is limited to her desktop as other puter views of her Yahoo pages are normal. I've also had her sign up to a new Yahoo ID hoping that resultant handshakes might re-establish whatever display related linkage may have been broken by the CC run...but no luck there. Also tried Piriform's new "RECOVA" utility but ended up with way too much straw to find whatever needle may have been buried in it.

It still appears to me as most likely a registry problem, but it's tough to argue with restoring the pre-CC backup not solving it.

So far, I can't say this is a CC version bug - in possibly mis-identifying some link as unneeded - vs. something I may have done unknowingly, thus classifying it as a 'pilot error' not a bug problem, but thought I should offer it here for hopefully some helpful inputs anyway. Personally, I'm at a loss of what options short of reinstalling her XP - a beyond 'last resort' one IMO - remain. Any ideas, anyone?

nevet,

A few long-shots to try:

- try switching to Yahoo Mail Classic. I see in the screenshots that Mail Classic is selectable.

- delete cookies from both browsers and restart. The easiest (and most brutal) way is "delete all," and put up with restoring those cookies as you surf; or try to find yahoo-only cookies and selectively delete.

- update your versions of IE and Firefox.

- did you install the Yahoo Toolbar when you installed CC? If so, remove it totally (see other forum threads on how to ensure this is total) and retry after it's gone.

These are suggestions only; no guarantees implied.

Good luck,

mgr

Tried all of those that applied, mgr, plus also RnR'd Java as was suggested by another site...nothing's worked so far.

Any other ideas?

I don't have a definite solution for you, but one comment you made has me thinking:

Problem is common to both her IE and FF browsers, and is limited to her desktop as other puter views of her Yahoo pages are normal.

I've never used the "Desktop Webpage" before, but it seems it could be cause of your problem. Right click the desktop, select "Properties\Desktop\Customize Desktop\Select the Web Tab".

Try deleting the Yahoo Home Page, and reset everything afresh again.

Sorry to mislead you, Dennis. My reference to "her desktop" should have been to "her desktop pc" (as opposed to her laptop one). My apologies.

Anyway, thanks for contributing...please come back if you come up with any other thoughts that might help. :)

Damn. I was hopeful about that one, but I did consider exactly what you explain, but posted it just in case it was a desktop web page, and not a desktop pc.

I'll keep thinking on it, and hopefully someone will have a sudden flash of inspiration and save you doing a reinstall.

If you don't already, it would probably be wise to look at backing up the Operating Systems on your pc's in future. Saves a lot of pain, and all done with free software.

A "Disk Imaging" program used by a few members here including yours truly is Macrium Reflect. It's often been discussed on here, and I know it works because I recently "restored" a back up Image of my pc.

Macrium Reflect: (Free Version)

Do a forum search for "Macrium" and you should get a lot of info.

EDIT: One other thought was have you installed any add-ons to your browser, in particular AdBlocking type extensions. It would be worth looking at any add-ons recently installed in case of conflict.

Try restoring advanced settings on both browsers.

Does she have an antivirus running?

Some more long shots:

- perhaps it's a graphics card issue. Don't know if your PC has the integrated onboard graphics set-up or a discrete graphics card, but it might be worth a check to see if there's a driver update available. Also, if the PC has an add-in (individual) card, sometimes removing the card and returning to the original onboard graphics chip will fix display issues (I had odd, random problems like this years ago with an ATI add-in card).

- try with another monitor.

- try a different monitor resolution / frequency.

- if you're adventurous, you could install Google Chrome or Safari (Win version) browsers temporarily and see if the issue remains.

Posted a little too soon - one more thought:

Try a refreshed browser install. IE is a pain to work with, so try Firefox. Uninstall Firefox, then reboot to a clean session. Use CCleaner (if you are comfortable) to remove remaining debris from the FF uninstall, then reboot again. Install the latest FF version from Mozilla WITHOUT add-ons and try Yahoo again.

The wild thought here is that the uninstall & clean boots may reset / repair some corrupted registry or profile settings.

Problem solved! (CC not cleared from possibly contributing, but wasn't the prime cause either...)

Btw, being hot on a different trail, I never got around to trying some of the recent suggestions here, but would have done so had the 'trail' petered out, which it didn't...but thanks all for your efforts to help, much appreciated!

So for you that contributed, plus anyone else lurking this topic, the problem was quickly solved by the second $ "expert" to address it (B. Rath) on the Just Answer web site...and for a mere $18 no less (plus my voluntary tip)! JA mostly works in real time, and only charges if you're happy with an answer from one of their supporting "experts" and "accept" it. If not ultimately accepted, your deposit (your choice of $12-$18+) is refunded. Site also says it's supported by "experts" from a variety of other areas besides computer related (e.g. doctors, lawyers, veterinarians, mechanics, etc.), so you can bet your boots that I, for one, will have it saved to turn to for any future toughies that turn up! And aside from "free" advice on support forums such as this - which is great when it works - there's no way any pro would have worked on DD's puter for less than 100 bucks or more, even if not ultimately finding the fault with it.

Anyway, off the commercial and back to the solution for this bear - one that had so far stumped me as well as anyone else who had looked at it on 5Star, Aanteres, and TechSptGuy forums as well as here - was simply (you're not gonna believe this!) to disable a default-enabled "ad blocker" (different than a "pop-up stopper" I learned) in the Verizon Security Suite (a Yahoo product I was told later) that DD had been running without a problem for over six months! Although amazed that could do it, and you can believe there's a couple of happy campers that it did, I probably never will understand why the problem only affected Yahoo pages, or why it started only after a CC run...but, I've long ago learned never to argue with success! :)

great to hear, weird bug anyway.

disable a default-enabled "ad blocker"

nevet

Sorry to tell you nevet, but damn, I beat them to it 5 days ago and you missed it. In my post, No 6 above. And my charge for that was $0.00. :)

One other thought was have you installed any add-ons to your browser, in particular AdBlocking type extensions.

Well, Dennis, I sure don't want to rain on your parade...BUT, to your suggestion:

have you installed any add-ons to your browser, in particular AdBlocking type extensions. It would be worth looking at any add-ons recently installed

...I would have had to give you a negative reply and have moved on. DD doesn't install stuff, no add-ons added to either browser never mind the identical add-on to both of them, plus she had had the Verizon Security Suite installed when she signed up to DSL with Verizon six months prior and it had been running without glitches until I CC'd her puter, plus it was a set of software produced by Yahoo that I wasn't even aware of or knew she had!

So you see, Dennis, for sure you were in the right ball park, for which you indeed deserve a modicum of credit for being on the right track. But the KEY here was the hired, on-point question I got from Mr Rath: "By chance, does your daughter have the Verizon Security Suite installed?" And then the follow-up suggestion after I queried DD and answered Rath with an excited "Yea Verily!" to disable VSS's ad blocker that resulted in the 'bingo,' plus the corresponding appropriate credit for solving this! Sorry 'bout that, no seegar, but hang in there, you were close.

Btw, while we're giving and taking away points here, you can add another point to your now somewhat diminished pile for pointing me to the free version of Macrium Reflect ...an input I had neglected to express appreciation for previously. Haven't explored or used it yet, but did add it to my do-list to check out later...so my humble thanks for that contribution, sir! :D

nevet

Well, damn and double damn.

No worries, you haven't rained on my parade. I wasn't as close as I thought I was, but it was a good attempt all the same.

Even if you'd checked any of the usual AdBlockers, it wouldn't have helped. You would've had to be aware firstly that VSS was in the frame as a suspect, and secondly that it even had an active AdBlocker.

One things for sure, I'm pleased you sorted it, and more importantly you posted back with the solution otherwise we'd be scratching our heads for weeks to come.

I guess I'll unchalk that one then, and bookmark this thread in case that problem ever rears it's ugly head again.

:)
