I spent 4 years working at a bank here in the mid 90's. One project was converting ATM's.

Now admittedly that was a good 10 years before XP was released but the idea of using Windows on what was nothing more than a data terminal would never have crossed our minds.

Even then, there were free, better alternatives available.

I was surprised to find that they now run Windows.

I'm shocked they run them via Windows. I would've thought they used something way more secure like Linux, or have their own proprietary OS.

I saw another article that said most atms that run windows use windows embedded which is a different os. The version of that based on xp is still going to be supported for another year or so.
