Can't run or uninstall CCleaner

Can't run or uninstall CCleaner - when I try to uninstall I get this msg:

can not load

c:\program files\ccleaner\ccsystem.dll

What operating system are you using?

What security software do you run?

Did CCleaner work for you previously or is this the first time you have used it?

Where did you download it from?

Windows 10

Stock Windows Defender - occasionally run free version of Malwarebytes

It did run until this morning

Downloaded from the CCleaner website

First thing I would try is a RESTART of your machine (just in case Windows has been updating in the background)

Did you use the registry cleaner part of CCleaner?

Thanks for the reply BTW!

I did restart - still no go!

I have used the registry cleaner in the past, but not recently. Everything else is running as normal

At a stand still now since I can't run, delete (uninstall) or re-install it!

Are there any entries for CCleaner showing in the Windows Task Manager?

See attached screenshot

CCleaner.jpg

I have to leave for a few hours - I'll check back for any suggestions on moving forward - thanks!

End all tasks with "CCleaner" in their name. According to the screenshot this would be the task: "CCleaner emergency updater (32 bit)".

Hopefully it should work after that.

I observe that the C:\Program Files\CCleaner folder contents look like this:

image.png

... and going back through historical notes I have not seen reference to ccsystem.dll for 12+ years ... possibly dating back to the days when CCleaner was built in VB. Is it possible that you were either running an extremely old CCleaner, or still have remnants of a very old version sitting in that directory?

Thankfully that did work! - Grateful for the help!

@JT1

if you dont want the autoupdater-service -> go to the ccleaner folder -> rename "ccupdater.exe" to for example "ccupdater_old.exe" -> after restart this service should not there... and this background service is deactivated

"branding.dll" or "ccleaner.dll" is also not showing on my ccleaner-folder (not installed and not portable)
