Hi Thierry, and welcome to Piriform.
I've just read that the frd extension could belong to "Need for Speed", or the extension could have been added to the file by another recovery program.
I would suggest removing the .frd extension from one of the files (make a copy of it first), and see if that works. It probably will, but let us know if it doesn't.
Make sure you remove the . as well as frd.
Hi Piriform,
I have the same problem. My newly bought external hard disk crashed, as a result, i was required to format everything. I have downloaded a couple of free recovery softwares and one of it really worked; it restored most of my files (jpg & bmp). However, it's got the extra extension of frd. I have tried to remove the extension by rename it but it still not work. Please pLease please help me.... All my summer holiday pictures are in your hands now...
thank you before hands.
Abbie
Hi Abbie, and welcome to the forum.
This should really be a problem for the support forum of the program you used which added the frd extension.
But we can still have a go at helping you out.
Which program was it you used which added the frd extension, and did you make sure you removed the . (dot) as well as the frd?
And have you tried looking for that programs support site, if they have one?
EDIT: Forgot the obvious Abbie. Does the program have a help file, which may tell you what you need to do?
Hello,
Thank you for the very fast reply. I really appreciate this.
I am using the free version of PC tools file recovery. In order to recovery this files, i have to buy the product and register. "Files only can only be recovered by the registered version of File Recover. Register Now." It is gonna cost me like 40 pounds. I have done homework on this recently and people told that though we buy the product and register, the chance of recovery is not 100% because some files are already corrupted. I don't wanna waste money and result turns out to be nothing or a bit better than nothing.
I wonder if there are any other ways to fix this? I am really really sick of it.. Sigh..
I have tried Recuva as well, and estimated time was like 12 days? and I gave up just keep it scanning for two days.
If there is no any other solutions to fix the frd extension, would you mind suggesting me any good file recovery software?
thank you trillions.
Abbie

I'd hate to see you throw away 40 quid for dicey results. If Recuva can't fulfill your requirement look into Cnet, which currently has 178 free recovery programs.
I really sympathise with you Abbie, but I wouldn't waste money on PCTools File Recovery. I detest programs which have a trial download, but won't let you even recover a limited number of files. To let you recover your files and then hit you with the "have to purchase" message, is a totally despicable marketing ploy IMHO.
Anyway, try using Recuva in a more targeted way.
Go into "Options\General", and in the "View Mode" box, select "Tree View".
Then go to the "Actions" tab, and select only "Restore Folder Structure".
Then scan the drive which contains the deleted files, and you will end up with a "Tree View" of the deleted files with the same folder structure as the drive.
You can then expand the tree view and look for the deleted files in the folders which originally held them.
This is a much quicker method to try initially, as it will find files and give you a good idea as to their recoverability. But you may find files which are marked as excellent and but don't recover in that condition.
Have a go and let us know how you get on.
Also look at Kroozers suggestion to try other recovery software.
Hi Kroozer,
Thank you so much for your suggestion. I have just downloaded the Pandora Recovery Software and I really wish it would work well.
Thank you heaps
Abbie
Hi Dennis,
I have tried like the way you suggested. Probably, for some reasons Recuva just doesn't like me that's why the process seems to be very very, well extremely slow. Thus, now I switch to use Pandora software and hopefully it gonna help me recovering some files... I will come back with the result later.
Thank you billions
Abbie
How did you format the drive Abbie?
Did you do a "Full Format" or a "Quick Format"?
I'm asking because a "Quick Format" may just remove the MFT, the database of every file on the disk, whereas a full format overwrites all files.
If you did the Quick Format, then the files may still be on that hard drive, and you'll have to scan for "undeleted" files as well.
First though, I'll need some input from any of our guys who can confirm or otherwise what a "Quick Format" actually does.
I've read conflicting interpretations on this, and I've never formatted a hard drive myself.
One view is that the files themselves are deleted/overwritten, but the drive isn't checked for errors, unlike a "Full Format", which checks the drive as well.
The other view is that a "Quick Format" only removes the MFT references to the files on the drive, and they are still there, although the space is now allocated as free, and available to be overwritten.
If it's just the MFT, that will make a difference to how you scan that drive, and there are other options available for recovering undeleted files on a drive which appears to be empty.
EDIT:
I'll ask this in case the obvious is being overlooked Abbie. Could your holiday snaps still be on the Camera or Camera Card? Recuva may be able to scan the card even if you've deleted the pics.
Hi Dennis,
Honestly, i don't understand at all about what you are saying I am really really noob at it. I am now using Pandora and, 90files found, 5% completed but the estimated time keeps on increasing. It is now 307hours already.
I forgot to tell you when i used the Recuva, 86files found and then the estimation of time kept increasing and no other file found just like the Pandora I am using now. There were many pictures in the hard disk before it was formatted. Some are my holiday pictures and some are the pictures of my university life, family reunion, well everything. The camera and memory are not with me. There really has no any other ways besides recovering my hard disk. I wonder whether I can only recover 86files or 90 files no matter what software I am using? I mean, is this the most i can get back?
Really thank you thank you thank you thank you for your help...
Abbie
HI hi hi hi Dennis,
I understand what you are saying now. I think i was doing the the quick format and now I am on recuva again. 136files was found and I am doing the deep scan now. Hopefully more files gonna be found. I will keep you update.
Oh my god, i really really don't know how to thank you... You are a life saver!!!
Abbie
Well, you've got to help a neighbour out when you can Abbie. I'm just along the road from you in Seaham.
Small world as they say.
I've got my fingers crossed that the files are OK after you recover them.
Hi Denis,
it's been awhile since i have last posted here. I have recovered only 136files found. that's all i could get back.. however, it is still better than nothing, right? I kinda give up trying to recover the files now, because the estimated time just keeps increasing and i haven't off my laptop for a while already.
thank you for your help, though. 136 files are not bad at all. Wow you are in Seaham? i think we are quite near. I am an international student in Sunderland, I am not really familiar with the geography here
Thank you
Abbie
I'm guessing you've lost quite a lot, and I'm sorry it couldn't have been more, but as you say, better than nothing.
If it's Sunderland University you're at, my daughter went there and did well. It's a highly rated university these days.
Good luck in your studies, and call back here any time.
