Can CCleaner clean rubbish ?

Morning all,

I've been using CCleaner and other Uninstallers for that matter.

Being and old DOSser I find under : C:\Program Files a bunch of

Directories (<DIR>), some empty, some not which I try to get rid

of with DELETE ..only to get the message : "access denied ".

This is annoying and to me it's the proof that when uninstalling,

some remnants were left behind and CCleaner won't find/delete them.

Is there a cure for this.

Thanks and greetings from Antwerp

Lorias

In Windows XP and newer there are known directories which may be empty however they can't be removed, and removing them may only result into them being recreated by Windows itself. CCleaner doesn't delete folders in Program Files!

Are you sure ?

I have been using DOS since before there were Windows.

My memory is failing but I do not remember the English version supporting "DELETE".

I have only used DEL to zap files, and it never touched directories,

for which "RD" (or RMDIR) was needed, and "/S" argument was always useful for a non-empty DIR.

If a directory appears empty and it cannot be removed "access denied" this could mean:

- hidden files still present, use dir /a-d or atttrib

- rootkit stealthing files making the folder appear empty

- an application has a handle to the folder

- folder contains non-standard names or characters

Hi, Lorias. Welcome. :D

Have you tried Unlocker by Cedrick Collomb? Just be sure you really want to get rid of the folder.

Is unlocker a tool or a weapon ?

An untrained soldier could take off his leg if you give him a bazooka ! !

Is unlocker a tool or a weapon ?

Yes to both. :P Lorias, as "an old DOSser" you know what to leave alone, eh?

CCleaner uses an application's own uninstaller. My experience has been that folders left behind by uninstallers are easy to delete, except for some anti virus apps. If your folders are locked, maybe they are not what they seem.

FWIW, if Unlocker is objectionable, remove my 2 posts and I apologize.

We've always suggested it on here.;)

I was just under the assumption that some of those empty folders were like "microsoft frontpage", "MSN Gaming Zone", "xerox", etc., which Windows won't let be deleted normally.
