Can anyone recommend a splitter for .avi film clips?

... How are the pills doing by the way? :)

Very well, thanks. When combined with the biweekly hypnosis sessions and The IA (Installaholic) meetings, I shall soon be cured.

Must be off now to download Avidemux version 2.5.6, it came out on 31 dec 2011 and I don't have it yet! :o

It is limited compared to Avidemux and VirtualDub, but I didn't get past the first thing I tried to do with it, and that is to save out a section of an avi.

With Avidemux, I can drag the slider to absolutely any part of the progression bar, marking off the "A" and "B" points, and then save that section off as a separate avi, but with Machete, I couldn't get past the initial setting of the start and finish points.

This warning kept appearing each time I marked out a section, and although I was using either the "previous key frame" or "next key frame" button to follow that direction, the window kept appearing.

Gave up.

Eli may be able to get this software to do what he requires, but I'll stick with Avidemux, which will save off any marked section without having to (attempt to) mark out key frames.

I have needed a simple task, to cut a video in to two parts [splitting] ,and for that function I did not have any issues.

As I sort of mentioned earlier Eli, if you've got it working for you, as Login did, and it does the job you want, then you can't ask for more.

I don't know why it kept popping up that message for me as there isn't anything untoward about my XP system that I know of, but I couldn't get past that error message with the avi file (an episode of the office) I was using, and because I get everything done with Avidemux, I wasn't bothered about finding out why.

It could have been the file I was working with causing the problem, as I know from experience that video containers such as avi, can have a host of things not quite right with them, but still play fine.

Just for info, an example is shown in this screenshot ...

All avi movie files, shown in "thumbnails" view. The odd one out there has something not quite right with it, although it plays fine. It may be the file header, it may be missing an index, or it may have been converted with an old version of whichever converter was used.

I didn't intend being too negative about Machete, just saying it as I saw it, and Avidemux obviously is doing something that Machete can't.

Blame Andavari. He asked me to post my findings.

I always pass AVI's through Avi-Mux GUI to remove any junk so they're compatible with my PS3, and if Avi-Mux GUI can't write out to a new file something is usually wrong with the file itself.

Avidemux has the nasty habit of writing in a DivX header, even when Xvid was used which annoys me, however Nic's Mini AviC FourCC Changer can fix the header info as to what it is either DivX, Xvid, etc., it normally comes bundled with Xvid however it can be separately downloaded, very much worth having in your video tools arsenal, and it's portable.

I like these little freebies, and there are quite a few around for messing with or trying to fix an avi file.
