Is this safe?
If you've partitioned your hard disk it's relatively safe to backup to your secondary partition. About the only things that could be troublesome would be a hard disk failure or malware that infects/deletes files.
Also in the event you have to reinstall Windows all of the files will still be in place on your secondary partition.
andavari, so partitioning a hard disk, is there any advantage to doing this for me if i have 2 external hard drives? i keep all of my movies, personal stuff, music, pictures and such on the externals and access them through that. i kind of thought that if i have to reinstall windows, i would just do that and then i dont have to worry about files and such with them on separate drives.
also, the hard drive that came with this computer is only 40 gb, so im guessing there really isnt much point?

Since you have to external hdd's I wouldn't think so, but then again you could partition it to can keep all setup files, etc., on the partition and never have to grab a CD-R again or plug in your external hdd's to get them from - although external hdd's sound cool because you can take a s**t load of music and movies with you to a friends PC or laptop.
In my Win98 days it was very useful having a partitioned disk because I kept the Win98 setup files on the D:\ partition and only needed a bootdisk to reinstall Windows, although I've never tried to install WinXP from a hdd but I may just try that out next time it's time to reinstall WinXP.
