I updated Recuva on Feb. 19 and March 3. Reviewing records today I find that the Ask toolbar was installed on both occasions, despite the fact that I most definitely unchecked that option. See the image. The toolbar is not to be found among installed programs or in browser add-ons. What is going on?

As far as I understand Piriform only bundles their software with the optional Yahoo Toolbar not the Ask Toolbar.

Oh dear. I apologize to Piriform. Sorry.
I see that I also updated PDF-XChange Viewer on those dates.
No problem Frank, you are forgiven ![:)]()
You can always block Ask.com on your system in all your browsers and in the Windows HOSTS file, but that will only work if the installer in question tries to download it - won't make any difference whatsoever if it's bundled in the installer.
Most installers have an opt-out option to not install it, then again if you're being forced to install it you could always find an alternative to whatever program keeps installing it.

I'm also using PDF X-Change
I think , you forgot to untick AskToolbar option when you'r updating PDF X-Change Viewer. Two last version forced user to install that JUNK toolbar ![:(]()

Try the portable version and only update it manually, then nothing can creep into the system without permission.
