Ads in freephone apps drain your battery

People may be surprised at the scale of this..

In Angry Birds, only 20 percent of the total energy cost was used to render and run the game. Forty-five percent of the energy was spent tracking the user's location with the GPS and uploading that information, then downloading location-specific ads over a 3G connection. The app kept the 3G connection open for around 10 seconds, even if the data transmission completed in less than that amount of time. This "tail energy" cost another 28 percent of the app's energy usage.

i wonder if newer phones have the ability to turn off some phone features automatically while playing games??? I have a blackberry and really not into playing games and can't do it on my phone.

Maybe if you played in airplane mode, or shut off location services. I have an ad blocker, so I don't see the banner contents, but I'm sure it still gets downloaded... hm..

ahhhh...u got an Android OS. I definitely have to switch to Android OS. I even have an HP Tablet with WebOS that I will convert to Android. Wonder if there is an App to turn on/off GPS. That way you just have to remember to turn off GPS....but will the game still go out after GPS gets turned on? Sounds like the phones will be needing a firewall. :(

Glad I don't have/need one.

I block all ad-providers at the host level (just like the phone's big sibling the computer)

Me too, but I wonder if they still try to seek data (as in, the application is programmed to send out checks that never get responded too because of the HOSTS file)
