A few big Windows 7 Ultimate x64 RC Bugs

I used CCleaner in the Windows 7 Beta without any majorly apparant issues, but the RC seems to be antoher story all together, as CCleaner apparantly breaks enough features to make using the program too risky for the time being.

Granted, this is somewhat expected in a prerelease OS, but as 7 is (from latest reports) only about 4 months from release, hopefully these bugs can start to get ironed out.

A few big problems I've noticed in the last 48 hours of playing with the RC:

1. Running CCleaner completely breaks the new Devices and Printers control panel. The green progress bar just scans very slowly accross the screen, and will just hang when it reaches the far right side. If you cancel the scan, either 0 items will be shown in the folder (in the lower left status bar text) or a random number of items may said to be in the folder, but are not visible or accessible in any way (IE you can't use or configure any of the installed devices that should be shown here.)

2. CCleaner also breaks both the "Bluetooth" and "Safely Remove Hardware" icons functionallity in the notification area. You can click on them, but they no longer do anything. This is possibly related to the fact that these items would normally show up in the (now broken) Devices and Printers control panel.

3. CCleaner somehow breaks the Task Scheduler, as opening the console window simply gives you error messages about missing tasks and Task Scheduling functionality no longer seems to work at all.

4. The Display Color Calibration wizard is unable to save calibrated settings to a profile after running CCleaner.

I'm using the latest version of CCleaner with all availible cleaning options checked. I'm not sure if each of these are caused by file or registry cleaning, but will be playing around in a virtual machine to see if I can find the specific cause for each of them and will post a follow-up if I can pinpoint them.

Hmm, all of those things work PERFECTLY for me.

But then I don't have the Advanced cleaning options on because I felt they were too risky to run on a BETA build of windows. So Its probably one of those.

I had the same issue with my remote that ricktendo64 is having but it turns out the HID service was stopped for some reason. Set it to automatic and now no problems.

Well, it doesn't seem to matter if advanced cleaning options are used or not. Default settings give the exact same result...

Since I'm unable to get Virtal PC installed at all, after another reinstall I've been trying to figure this out the hard way be by backing up (w/Reg Entries at least -- CCleaner really needs an option to move files to recycle bin when cleaned) and cleaning a few things at a time and rebooting.

I don't think file cleaning does it, unless it's related to an obscure log file (seems unlikely) or some IE index.dat files, and registry keys make the most sense anyways...

I removed all of the Unused File Extension and Invalid default icons entries, and this seemed to do nothing.

I removed all the Open with Application orphan entries pertaining to, in 3 separate groups, Windows Backup, DVD Maker, and Bitlocker, and none of these seemed to break anything.

And I removed all of the Missing Shared DLL entries pertaining to NET Framework, and after this everything seemed to break again. For some reason I also seem unable to restore these entries to the registry (I merge the REG file, but they don't show up in CCleaner again, unlike all the other backups) so this seems like a possible culprit... but who knows.

I suppose for the time being I'll just have to not use CCleaner... but with all the application and driver installations that are being a PITA and requiring multiple install attempts with various compatibility settings to get them (mostly) working I'm making an awful mess on my hard drive... heh.

The funny thing is, I had more Windows bugs, and less application/driver bugs when Win7 was still beta, but the RC build has reversed all that - The OS itself seems rock solid and ready to go RTM (less buggy than Vista even,) but all the app and hardware issues remind me of the early days of Vista when everyone was dragging ass getting their updated software out.

Who knows if we'll get a RC2 with MS wanting to get 7 out before the fall school shopping season starts, but hopefully a lot of software is updated in the next couple of months. Cross fingers, eh?
