I might have selected the Gutmann cleaner using CCLEANER. My computer is restarting itself endlessly and I fear that it would be a virus, but I'm kind of sure it is the Gutmann thingy. Is not restarting from desktop, I have a DELL XP so when the Dell logo appears it restarts itself after loading.
Now, if it is the Gutmann cleaner, my questions are
What am I going to loose?
Is the Gutmann thingy on CCLEANER similar to DBAN'S?
Am I scr3wed if I don't know hot to instalL an OS?
I heard it is just a file shredder if you use it on CCLEANER, if that so, what is it erasing?
Am I losing document files and recent downloads?
I heard that I have to wait 6 days in order for it to finish, is that so???
This is my first time experiencing this, please help.
Selecting the Gutmann option for secure deletion will not cause your pc to reboot once, let alone constantly. It merely purports to overwrite the data that is selected for deletion many times. Depending on how much data you have to overwrite it may take some time, but six days does seem excessive. One has to assume that you don't have a large number of gb of temp data to overwrite.
CC will not overwrite any of the O/S, or any 'good' data. It is intended to remove temporary files only which are not necessary for your pc to run.
If you have chosen to wipe free space then the Gutmann option does not apply, you will get one overwrite of zeroes. Wipe Free Space will take a considerable time, again depending on how much free space there is on your disk and how fast your disk is. This will not overwrite any live data at all.
Did you run CC and then your pc rebooted immediately, or did the CC run to completion and then the pc rebooted, or what? If nobody has a fast easy answer to your rebooting I should repost in the Spyware Hell forum.

Well, it rebooted once and everything seemed ok, then I turned it off for the night. This morning when I turned it on, my computer began to reboot itself non stop after reloading the DELL logo (the one that comes before the WINDOWS XP LOGO and Desktop).
So what do you think this is? I'm using my moms Laptop btw.
i recommend taking the hard disk, putting it on another computer, running in safe mode, or opening window with a D.O.S, rescue any files pictures music etc. format the disk, and install windows 7 ultimate and dont fear, gutman pass is NOT avirus in anyway, you probably have a weak hard drive that couldnt "hold on" to the necesary .dll or start up files, anyway, hope it helped..
