Windows 8 improves boot times using hybrid boot (log-off user + hibernate).
As opposed to normal hibernation (save apps in RAM to HDD before hibernating).
If you regedit Shutdown button in 7 to link to Hibernate, & make it run log-off user cmd 1st, will this be = to 8's hybrid boot?
If you reboot 8, it takes much longer because of having to load devices & drivers again (instead of resuming from hibernate).

1) Some things I want to know so I will have to further test, are since 8 goes into hibernation instead of shutdown, does it affect battery life any on netbooks/laptops.
2) Some apps I tested under 7 that require a reboot, can be fooled into believing a reboot has happened by simply logging off & logging back in. I am wondering if some users mistakenly choose shutdown (thinking it is the same process as 7) & log back in if it may cause problems. I will test more to see about this, as it should be interesting to learn more about what happens.
3) I also intend to disable Aero under 7 & some other things to compare the speed of 7 to 8 after I "optimize" it similarly to 8's services/loaded processes/etc.

Lastly, the way Windows 8 loads A/V before the OS begins is very interesting. Sounds great.
I know 8 has a built in engine that does ok for removing malware/viruses, even though there are better ones. If a user installs their choice of A/V & later get infected with A/V that replaces theirs with the hijacked version, will 8 load the hijacked A/V & become that much harder to remove?
This is so interesting, that I may purposefully download fake A/V & infect my own machine for the sake of testing how Windows 8 handles this.
Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? Has anyone else tried any of this yet?

I noticed that you have no picture set for your user account.
Is it me, or has anyone else thought of the possibility of newbie PC users posting screenshots of their computer (complete with user account picture) & some program or website (http://face.com/ has been acquired by facebook) using it to identify users?
Think of the future. Cop stops you & takes picture with his cellphone. Cell checks photo online. Yessir! Positive identification of who this is!!!
I kinda like the way 7 hides the user account pic till you logout. At any rate, what do you think about this?

I wonder if that's why my computer became completely unstable for about a solid 2 week period, and then out of nowhere it stopped crashing.
Very possible.
Wouldn't be the 1st time an MS update hosed a machine.
I prefer manually updating so I can test & verify.

1) Do you have NIS on all of them, or only 1 of them? And if so, which of them do you use/have the problem with?
2) Are you using IE9 at the moment? If you try Firefox instead, does this issue still occur? Perhaps you can try a different browser (just for troubleshooting).
3) Do you have anti-phishing toolbars installed? NIS/AVG/other A/V love installing toolbars. Maybe an antiphishing component is blocking? I don't use a toolbar under FF (since it already includes google blacklisting by default, where it blocks suspicious websites).

I assume, due the post #1 link you provided, that your using W7 laptop when you have this problem.
Would love to know if you have the problem on just 1 machine, or more than 1 of them.

Right now, CPU use varies. 0% to 9% or so.
Ramwise, FF takes about 725 MB of my 4 GB.

Some of the tabs are background tabs, where I opened under 17.01 & it crashed, so that I had to re-open.
Difference so far, under FF18b5 (yes, I know they just released the beta 6 the other day) is that it has not (yet) crashed when I opened those tabs, or chunked 50 or so NEW tabs to the background.
Hmmmm... What do I use them for... Sometimes, I look for themes for W7 or W8. In doing so, I might use a deviant art page with themes & d/l a theme by a user. But I know if a user has a good theme, they likely have other util/themes that are equally good. It is not unusual that I should then visit their page, & d/l other off their page (or check out their friends, since if they have good taste in what they do, they usually select friends who have good taste also).
What would I use themes for in 7 or 8? Some computers I have are older & do not support 7 Aero. You can get graphics cards that do, but in the sake of experimentation, it is very interesting how cool Royale port to 8 looks on non-aero capable computers. Very much different than the bland default basic that is enabled if your PC does not support Aero.
I may have to use it on 8 when I play around with it more, to see how it looks on 8 as well. Might have to find a way to n-lite my 8 to remove things I never use (Such as windows store). It's not that I don't shop online sometimes, but I just don't trust a built in undeletable store icon. (Why is it imperative to have "mandatory" store service?) You can disable the service. I rather just re-do my W8 dvd so that it don't have those things installing in the 1st place. I am likely to not get any apps, as I have most things I need already. So it would be useless on my machine.

Other things I use it for, are sometimes when I download new programs, I kick the downloads to background tabs. So I can continue without interruption on the page I am on, & download faster than ever (no return to prior page, then find the download I was at, etc).
Sometimes I also have youtube videos open (I play drums, & I crank my stereo so I can jam).
There are a lot of things I look up & its faster to open 10-12 tabs, then check them out, rather than open/backspace/open another/backspace etc.
I may not always open hundreds of tabs. But in the name of research, downloads, youtubing, & others... I tab out FF.

I agree that XP & 7 are great. Testing both for fun, & to see what is the fastest, decent to use OS I can manage on a netbook.

When I was using Firefox 17.01 with several groups of tabs open & 423 tabs on one group, it would crash fairly predictably. It would run fine for a while, but when you add say, 20-50 new tabs, a crash would occur.
I decided to scrap 17.01 temporarily & test same websites with Firefox 18b5.
So far, it seems to be faster, use less RAM, & not crash.
Interesting, to say the least. Seems 17.01 does ok with small sets of tabs, but in groups of tabs, it chokes.
Glad to find that the 18b5 is doing much better.
If anyone else has anything they want to add, feel free! Thought this may be interesting to post, as other users may or may not have experienced the same.

Is your drive a fully SSD, or HDD with SSD bootable partition (Hybrid drive)?
Glad you got the problem fixed though. Reminds me of the days when they used to have audio cards with PATA connectors to add other drives.
I actually had to use one before on an older machine after I ran out of slots for my audio/video/internet/other cards.

Example: Customers take a preview of a restaurant, to see if the think they would like it.

1) XP -> Needs Sata drivers. Testing 64 Bit XP with 32 Bit drivers later, since XP 64 Bit are harder to find.
2) 95/98/ME/2,000 -> Testing with Sata drivers + VM later, to see if that enables them to work.
3) EasyPeasy -> Testing performance vs Ubuntu.
4) Splashtop -> Basic. Allows fast internet access before your primary OS loads.

Vista may be a good pick for a netbook:
1) - Photo viewer has built-in basic editor for photos.
2) - Network icon shows lights for incoming & outgoing traffic (compared to static un-animated icon in 7.
3) - Sleep -> Had a problem under 7 not resuming WiFi network after sleep. Testing Vista sleep to see how it does.

I definitely like it a ton better than the bland/grey basic on non-aero capable computers in 7.
Basic 8 looks better than in 7, I suppose, but I hope one day to figure how to pull off Aero in 8 like I want.

I'm not saying the current version on their site is or isn't freeware, I didn't look any further into it after being horrified by the sheer download size for what should be a "simple" labeling program just knowing it would be a crapfest of install files scattered everywhere and possibly tons of registry entries.
I don't just base it on that. I base it on functionality/ease of use/likeability.
Then, I check if I really need those language files/uninstaller.dat/uninstaller.exe (or sometimes unins000 or similar), readme.text etc.
I check what the bare minimum is that it will run without & still retain full functionality.
It is also possible they sometimes bundle toolbars/other features/trial programs that waste space.
I check them out & then if they fail, I bin them.

I thought additionally about the matter, & decided if they have the rights to spy on people & claim it is to prevent intellectual property theft, I have the rights to do the following:
1) Implant video cams in Microsoft offices to watch everything they do & be sure they pay for all the content they are consuming.
2) Connect to worldwide systems to detect if anything they say, sing, or do is plagiarism or copyrighted.
3) Sue Microsoft for watching kids. If they truly watch all people, that is just sick to think they watch kids in their bedroom.
4) Sue Microsoft for not paying for the expensive TV show I am giving them in my house.
5) Sue Microsoft for violation of privacy. I have a right to be free.
My thoughts & time are worth at least as much as the intellectual property of MS.
I try to do no harm to anyone, but if I am wrongfully attacked, I believe in self defense.

hazelnut -> I don't use classic shell I really prefer to use Win 8 as is.
SuperFast -> I can type 130 + WPM, so searching is not a problem for me. I just prefer to see what I am clicking, & sometimes I forget the name(s) of one or more of the thousands of programs I batch install in a testing session.
I can see where you had success with textual access, but it seems that it doesn’t work that well for what I use it for.
Classic Shell makes it far easier for me, but I am guessing you are more textual oriented. No problem there. Just a difference of likes.

Hazelnut -> Once folk figure out that the start screen IS the old traditional start button plus more, they will understand Win 8 better.
SuperFast -> I knew that about Win8 way before they launched it. I read up about it. I also tried it. It has functions that are coolish, but sometimes they do get in the way with what I use it for. I like right-click uninstall, but sometimes I just like to see a pretty Wallpaper behind my icons. Instead of what I consider much uglier tiles.
I don’t hate tiles, I just have a preference for the desktop (most of the time) because I have 20,000 + High Res wallpapers to check out.

Hazelnut -> I also have no idea what you are talking about when you say one minute you are in desktop screen and the next in full screen apps mode without you doing anything. It just doesn't happen unless you ask it to.
SuperFast -> Maybe it doesn’t happen on yours, but when I am in a desktop tile & click an app, I get kicked out of the desktop for a full screen app. I don’t mind full screen apps, but I wish they had a way to max/min/control the size of it in a normal window so I can go back to my desktop easier when I need to. It’s kind of jolting to click an app & have it hide the desktop while it goes full screen & goes on top of all other windows & full screen.
Again, I don’t hate the apps. I just wish I could remain in desktop while having more control over when the app goes full screen (or being able to X it out & close it without having to use charms & other actions that take up way too much finger motion on mouse or screen if you have a large screen).
Traditionally, a simple mouse click or keyboard control & your out of an app. Not much mouse travel at all.
I tried to explain things so you would understand better, so hopefully you can see now what I am talking about.
Now, don’t take it as a hate 8 thread, because even though I have things I don’t like about 8, there are other things I do like.
For instance: I hate that they disable Aero in 8

Or, if necessary, patched to support a Royale/glassy visual style similar to the one used in 7 for machines that cannot support aero glass due to graphics cards.I did get around to testing the registry patch for increasing screen resolution on 10 in netbook screens so that it won’t generate the err that screen resolution is unsupported & it actually does work, so long as you reboot after making the change.
When I say I hate something, don't take it personally or anything. Usually, it doesn't mean I haven't tried it or experimented with it, but that it just doesn't work the way I want/need it to at the moment.
Sometimes, it makes me sad that by the time you have everything working the way you want on one OS, you have to re-do everything all over again for a new OS that changes it again. Oh, the time!!!
Just try to look over the things I "hate". I am only human, after all, & subject to emotion. Hey, I try!!! LOL!

It's a real brain-stirrer that you cannot boot to safe mode using F8
Yeah, now you have to use shift + f8 to get to it.
That, or MSCONFIG/Boot tab/Safe Mode/Basic (if your in Windows) & reboot.

Who do you work for? I'm not doubting you but your throwing around a lot of "absolute facts" that I've never heard mentioned before. I have WD my book drives that are about 5 years old and work fine. I've never read any articles in mainstream tech journals saying not to use 3.5 externals.
Whether all the things he states are fact, I do know a few people that accidentally dropped/knocked a drive & caused immediate permanent damage.
Afterwards, all attempts to get the drive to work (short of data recovery lab) failed.

Text data stored in the ADS “Zone.Identifier” flag is the same for every file.
Therefore, you can add an ADS named “Zone.Identifier” with this text to any file & Windows will auto apply the additional security measures.
Example: To add the downloaded from the Internet status back to the xmlnotepad1.msi file, run the command:
notepad [filename]:Zone.Identifier
Because this ADS does not exist, Windows will ask us if we want to create it. Answer Yes.
In Notepad, enter this exact text:
[ZoneTransfer]ZoneId=3Save your changes and close Notepad.
Run XmlNotepad1.msi or view its properties, & previous warnings will be in place.
You can do this with any file: MP3, DOC, CHM, etc. & Windows will treat it as untrusted until the respective flag is removed.

Even if this doesn't get added to CCleaner, I had the distinct feeling that you were of the opinion that this was dangerous.
I am not sure how a 26 byte text file, that is identical for all files, being removed is dangerous...
But you may know more than I, concerning this. I found it interesting, nonetheless.

Dennis, I have not tried Chrome to be sure, but I used to think that Firefox had to install extensions off the web.
But I found out you can save .xpi files & drag them onto Firefox, or even FF shortcut & it presents the install window.

I had the idea that perhaps I can create a self extractor that extracts a .xpi file directly to %programfiles%\Mozilla Firefox\Firefox.exe to see if that triggers FF to install it.
Also had the idea of monitoring the %appdata%\Mozilla\Extensions folder as well as a few key other areas to make an auto installer for certain extensions.
When I get time, I will definitely test these to see what happens. Don't suppose the Chrome extensions work the same way, do you?

If you need Adblock, ForecastFox, etc., you can save to your flash drive a shortcut with relative path to your Firefox.exe in the Program File folder, and a copy of whatever .xpi file you need to install. Drag & drop the .xpi file onto the FF shortcut, & voila! No need to redownload it.
To save FF .xpi files, simply right click/save on the installation link (instead of left click).
I could be wrong, but am thinking that perhaps Chrome works very similar.
Very interested in testing my theories later.

If you do discover that the anti-phishing bar is definitely the culprit, you have have to either disable it prior to visiting here & turn it on afterwards, or remove the bar & try another one by another vendor.
Do update us on how it does on XP later!
