  1. Fwiw, I believe Avast is quite good. I use an older version on xp, and don't let the one on win 7 update the program (new versions have some extra stuff I don't want) but I have always found Avast to be a good AV. But I doubt the time will come when members are constrained from making their best recommendation. Sure hope not. edit 18 August 17: Ahhh, well, I must have awakened the jinx. Avast update mechanism has gummed up completely. Been a while, no fix in sight yet.
  2. Paint is imho very cool bit of software. The early versions, clunky by today's standards, showed us that we could create art on our computer. Got kids interested when nothing else did.
  3. Yep, been a good run. Probably not over yet. I think and hope this forum will continue to thrive, and all the Piriform softwares also. This is probably not the end of "Like as we know it, Jim". The careful approach taken by the Piri team, and the fast performance of the softwares, hopefully guarantees that the whole community will be OK. OK, shameless plug over. But I really believe that stuff.
  4. Good question. It's an old habit, started back in the days when you could be pretty sure that sooner or later some new version would crash or some great software would just disappear. The objective is to have alternatives on hand. It has sort of become a hobby (not an obsession, I hope ), trying new softwares or new versions. Also, I want to keep xp going as long as possible, so must maintain my own softwares and maintenance files. Edit: Then too, some softwares are just cuter than others.
  5. Hazelnut's post caused a minor flurry of software experimenting here. I also tried a player called MPC-BE, or Media Player Classic - BE, it worked very well. MPC-BE and MPC-HC seem very similar but I didn't try them very extensively. . Both play all the popular file formats. Both are available in a .zip or .7z file which you can just extract & run. Also, there is a new version of VLC player, v-2.2.6, for x86 and x64, as well as a portable version at the portable apps site. The 2.2.6 portable version seemed slower, but I didn't give it much of a trial.
  6. There are new-ish portable versions of PDF-XChange Editor and PDF-XChange Viewer available. I've used PDF-XChange for years on an as needed basis, but never have permanently installed it. I tried the latest free portable editor, worked well and fast here on xp. Did not try the viewer. The portable version has some good editing features, and of course some are available only in the paid for pro version. Be careful, the installer from the author's site wants to install a toolbar, bur you can uncheck it. The portables don't do that. Just unzip them to their own folder & run them. PDF-XChange Editor Portable v-6.0.322.4 https://portableapps.com/news/2017-05-22--pdf-xchange-editor-portable-6.0.322.4-released PDF-XChange Viewer Portable v-2.5.322.4 https://portableapps.com/news/2017-05-22--pdf-xchange-viewer-portable-2.5.322.4-released The author's site is https://www.tracker-software.com/product/downloads
  7. Yep, there are some malwares that rename themselves, that was my first thought too. There are also some "good guy" malware removers that do it also, but you would probably know if you're running one of those. . So, +1 to mta's suggestion to get help from one of the malware removal sites listed in rule #10. That's sort of a long & tedious process sometimes, but it will give you peace of mind to find out nothings wrong, or if it is, fix it. Post back what you find out, if you can. Just for for information.
  8. Hi, joeg. Not much action on your question. I tried a search for the dll file names you listed and didn't find anything either. Also searched for the CLSID, found nothing that looked promising. One thing you might try is this. When CCleaner finds such an entry in the registry, right click on it and select Open in Regedit. This will open the registry editor to the key that CCleaner found. That might provide a clue about the software involved. Good luck, post back what you find out if you can.
  9. The second link in post 1 pops a warning from Avast here on XP.
  10. Hi, Griz. There is a some benefit to cleaning out window's leftover junk. Ccleaner is a good cleaner software, but like any other it must be used carefully. Read about how it works, take your time, and use it in little bits. Make backups, etc, whenever prompted.
  11. I'm sure it does impact your life profoundly. Sorry to hear about that but thanks for sharing. I was afraid my posts had given offense, although they were intended to be light banter.
  12. Well, I knew this wouldn't be the hottest topic in the lounge, but this is sure a slow weekend. Can't even provoke a spirited riposte from friend nukecad. > Sigh <
  13. Yes. Would be an impressive creature. Should we call it a tardiworm or a flatigrade?
  14. Dear nukecad, . . . what unmitigated poppycock. As to cuteness: The porcine wrigglings of the tardigrade cannot compare to the elegant, gliding perambulation of the planaria. As to toughness: if you cut a tardigrade in half, he's done for. If you cut a flatworm in half, he becomes two flatworms. And anyway, who wants to survive riding on the outside of a of rocket ship? So there! I suggest we start a poll to decide which is the superior animal. You'll see, the world will side with the planaria. That said, while I disagree with what you write, I will defend to the death your right to write it!
  15. Yes, saw that. Very interesting it was. Didn't know the real name of the water bear until I read your post. But hold on just a second there . . . "cuter"? Tough, I'll give ya that, but cuter? Harrumph.
  16. OK . . . I admit it isn't really up there with 200 mph bike races, but maybe the garish title will bring some folks in off the street The linked NPR podcast also has some information about immortal two headed flatworms in space. Cool, huh? https://www.sciencefriday.com/spotlights/cephalopod-week/ NPR: http://www.npr.org/podcasts/381444525/science-friday
  17. hi, jazz123. Is it possible that the files really are just 80MB? Were they part of an original larger file or package of files? Then after something happened to require a recovery software, those 80MB files might have been all that was left. Btw what did happen to those drives to mess them up? Knowing might help recover the files. Just thinking . . .
  18. +1 Any registry editor can wreck your computer, not just recent ones and not just recent operating systems. The easiest way I know to think of it is this: If you don't know exactly what a change will do, don't make the change.
  19. OK, thanks, I understand. Still seems like the dll itself should be somewhere in your windows. ?? I'm going to install that update permanently. Will report back if that dll winds up somewhere in windows. Will be a day or two.
  20. US Supreme Court said so. Sort of. But you can still get sued. Eh? What? Hows that again? Case is styled Impression Products v. Lexmark International http://fortune.com/2017/05/30/supreme-court-printers/ link to the full opinion here, its a pdf https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/16pdf/15-1189_ebfj.pdf
