  1. Thanks for the advice. Now if I could only get CC to work correctly on my Win 98 desktop. Apparently there is a known problem with a blank page after analyze. I can confirm the problem.

Consider yourself lucky if you can get support for anything that is almost ten years old. Especially computer/technology based.

  2. Er... OK, wh can't she stick them in a folder "Decision Needed" or similar ;) Surely safer??

OK, Temp folders and Temp Internet folders surely can be wiped??

They are. You'll have to read the guide on their options though.

Personally, I don't want other people in control of my user profile and making the decisions as to when and what gets deleted. I would bet money that other people who have computers with multiple users feel the same way. I don't bookmark every page I go to. Should I decide to go back, I have my history files, unless someone else deleted them for me.

  3. Ha, I'm just wondering in case I ever need to check up on my kids and whatnot. My teenage son always uses it after using the computer and I'm a little suspicious. But boys will be boys. Anyway, thanks. :)

    1) Make sure he is a limited account user.

    2) Use firewall or router to block sites you do not wish him to use. Parental controls.

  4. Yep, SIW is one of the best for system information. :)

About finding the product key straight off an XP install cd.

I was thinking more along the lines that a friends pc had crashed and needed to reinstall XP but had lost his product key.

Place the XP install cd in your machine and searching for unattend.txt should find it.

Makes it sound easy to steal someones computer. I guess there is no point in hiding my install keys in a seperate safe location. Doing this they don't even need to buy an OS to use my computer.

  5. I am wondering, is it safe to delete, remove, uninstall and get rid of. The Simms, Pictionary and Quicktime?

CCleaner is great, so is Scotty. Thanks ! What is all of the above ? What do they do ?

    DazednConfused

Never just delete. Use the uninstaller.

  6. I agree with every word of this. I love this extension, but it has caused a number of arguments between Mary (my other half) and myself. She uses IE at work, but has finally come around to my insistence on using Firefox on the home PC. Now, whenever a website doesn't render as it should, I just tell her that she has to enable scripting. This drives her mad. She just wants everything to work. She is however getting used to the idea. So much so, that I heard her discussing the principal of the No Script extension to an equally sceptical friend of hers just after Christmas. :D

Your wife is the typical user that MS tries to cater to(which I appreciate). I am not saying that in a bad way but that is the real reason behind the vulnerabilities of MS OS's and IE. They make it so you can use it immediately with practically no computer knowledge. Most people don't want to change settings to do something out of the ordinary browsing experience. IE6 can be a safe browser but set up in that safe fashion you can't download, certain pages won't look right etc... without changing these settings. Thats why I like the NoScript add-on, two clicks, settings are changed, and you are doing what you want.

  7. Thank you for the link, which helped to explain things for me. Unticking 'Office XP' (in my case) does the trick. I'll continue to rely on CCleaner as I have for some time now.

One last thing, and it's off-topic: Such a fine utility deserves a better name than Crap Cleaner.

I think its a nice KISS.

  8. Why does Uninstall in CCleaner show entries not shown in Control Panel Add/Remove?

The entries are valid but not in Control Panel like AiOsoftware where I believe this is HP All in One (AiO).

    Why does CCleaner show these?

    thanks

I don't know but if there is a program on my computer that I don't know about through Add/Remove programs, then I hope CCleaner continues to do so. Otherwise, how do you know they are there and get rid of them?

  9. It might be do to the fact thar some files can not be deleted until a reboot.

All of the index.dat files are tagged/marked for deletion but can not be deleted until a reboot.

Windows creates new index.dat files after reboot.

Try check marking OPTIONS->ADVANCED "Show detailed log of Internet Explorer temporary files"

That will help explain it. Good observation!!!

    From the help files:

    Temporary Files

Many applications use temporary files when working to save information. These are normally deleted upon exit, but occasionally they can be left behind. Normally when the program is not shut down properly. This option will safely delete these files. (By default it only removes files that haven't been used in the last 10 days, this prevents current temp files from being removed. There is an option to turn off this feature on the Options window.)

  10. yeah noscript seems to be pretty good.gonna re-dl it(i got it ages ago and it kept annoying me when some pages wudnt load up properly).

shud check out TrackMeNot,stops data profiling on search engines, and KeyScrambler which ofc protects u against keyloggers

edit : whats better, adblock plus or noscript?

edit : was just messing around with both of them, noscript seems to be really good, definitely keeping it!!shud been using it earlier

I was experiencing problems with FF crashing even with just adblock as only add-on, extension, theme, to the point where I quit using FF altogether. But since retrying FF with just NoScript, it works beautifully again and faster than ever since you aren't opening and running all the ads.

  11. Just remember that when a web page has functions that are not working or even fails to load at all, then it is probably NoScript causing the problems.

I love NoScript as well, I just could not put it on anybody elses computer, as much as I want to, because they would not have a clue what is causing the problems.

Options, which is quite visible, (I leave the warning bar on the bottom when it blocks and/or sound to tell you it is blocking) temporarily allow, or alternatively, always allow depending on site and situation. Default is to reload page you are on if you do allow. I know enough to know I know nothing and find it quite easy to use.

  12. I really like gparted live. Its linux boot up cd that is only a disc partitioner.(works very well and requires no linux knowledge)

    http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

Also this site is giving away paragons partitioner for free:

    http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/downloads/216...on-manager-2005

I assume gparted works with windows? If it does, do you know of a good link for instructions on use? Also will this destroy info on existing partitions?

  13. Is the new project another freeware application? If so, PLEASE take your time! I think that most of the other CCleaner forum users would agree with me that they would much rather see a stable freeware application released a few months late than a buggy commercial application released "on time."

I know that CCleaner is a lot of work, and MrG deserves a break just like anyone else! So thank you MrG for all of the hard work you put into CCleaner, and thank you for creating even more great software releases for us. ( which will hopefully be freeware :P )

    I second that motion

  14. I have CAantivirus,which is due for renewal in 13 days, and don't I know it !!

For 2 days now, when on the internet every so often I get a full page pop-up with the CA homepage telling me this.

I am now getting fed up with this as I do find this kind of notification intrusive. <_<

Now they might think I have some sort of memory loss to which they have to remind me to "renew my license in 13 days ".unfortunatley for them I don't have a memory problem, and after 13 days I will not have CA as a problem either!

I shall not be "renewing my license in 13 days"I will be moving on to another AV.

I don't think that I am the first person to go elsewhere due to this, I am also pretty sure I won't be the last, which is a shame for such a good program :(

Maybe you should inform them of this, politely. Lots of companies would improve if they only knew how and in what ways. You might also be surprised by the response you get back from them. Perhaps a free renewal if you are polite and explain fully how you feel.

  15. I can't remember what thread I was clued into this with, but I must say I love this NoScript Add-on for Firefox. I was having trouble with FF and went to IE7, but after reading about this add-on went and got it and I am no longer having any trouble with FF. It works faster than ever, blocks ads, almost too good to be true!

I highly recommend to anyone who does not have it yet.

  16. Seriously I wonder who makes up the names of these new devices, and such.

    Ah yes, system requirements: :P

    * A Star Ship with warp capabilities.

    * A halo deck, preferably with a few mobile emitters.

    lol. Good one.

Halographic pictures have been around for over thirty years that I know of. They are the pictures that change depending on the angle you are looking at them. This is what the laser will be doing. Changing angles.

  17. Uh Oh. Yer startin to loose Me again. Puter crashes certainly aren,t My favorite topic. hehe. But again some very great info, if I can just sort it out. I dont want to buy one of those printer deals You plug the the camera in. I just want a simple camera to email pics. I,m A wildlife freak, So For My important photo,s I will still take with My high dollar cameras with the big zoom on them, & I guess if need be They can put them on a cd for Me to send if I want, Is that correct ?

But I don,t know what to do from there. I assume It will load in My pictures in My documents, But I,ve never done that either. I figured if I got a digital I could sort thru whats worth keeping & whats not. To send thru email. As I go thru probably 5 rolls of film a week, My wife takes to town to get developed. Mostly critters. to keep for Myself. But I also mail them to My Sis,s & Brother, & it,s gettin kinda expensive.

Sorry if this is to much info, just trying to cut corners & have more options To make it a little cheaper & more enjoyable for Me. As I have turned into a hermit, Haven,t left My property in 5 years or been around anyone. So just tryin not to get any crazier I guess.

Plus My Wife Works for a cruise line & travels all over the world, & I thought it would be away for Her to send Me instant pictures via email. Allthough I might be wrong. Anyway I,m still sorting thru the info & trying to figure out the best options. Thanks again for any input.

right now I,m looking at the cannon MP PowerShot A530 allthough it only has a 16mb flash memory I can get the igb memory card for about anuther 30 bucks. the camera is on sale for $140.00 So I thought I might buy 2. Doe,s this make any sense Or am I going about it the wrong way. Thanks again . Cowboy

Yes they can put it on a cd/dvd for you if you want. But it sounds like you are into photography so you would probably enjoy the features of a good photo editing program. You can crop, resize, remove redeye, rotate, make black & white , add color, change color and much more. Can really be fun. They aren't that hard to use. I know nothing of computers or photography, yet I can use my "digital darkroom" quite easily. I beleive you can also buy external card readers that plug into computer via usb. When you do this it should default to "my pictures" in "my documents" or you can select a different path to save.

If you open the picture from the cd/dvd you can "save as," the default should be "my pictures" in "my documents." You can save onto computer only those selected or save all then select which ones to email. Personally, I don't find it that hard to send multiple emails if I need to send large amounts of info.

  18. I don't necessarily think it's a Kodak problem. I think it's a WinXP default camera driver that's outdated for Kodak cameras, and a Kodak problem combined. The reason I'm thinking of it that way is because my old and not really used that much 2.0 megapixel Kodak that came with my Dell computer didn't require their software, however the newer 5.0 megapixel camera won't work on the PC without it.

The newer XP must be a little smarter as so far if I don't have the driver it asks for permission to get it. Also, when I plug in a device it tells me the make and model. This came in handy when an acquaintance tried to sell me a webcam. There was nothing on device telling me what it was in any way so I couldn't google it to find info on it. Plugged it into computer, voila, all the info I needed. I still didn't buy tho as I suspected it was hot and he had nothing to convince me otherwise. I do not support theiving as it really does cost us all.
