  1. No I haven't. Mainly because I don't want to go through hardware hoops like finding correct drivers, etc.

Hmm so the U.S. power consumption could be elleviated to some degree if everyone living in the U.S. switched to Linux. :o:)

PCLinuxOS and Mepis are two Distros' that I know of that do an auto detect. I just added my printer and it was that easy, "Add Printer." Done.

I am at work right now but when I get home I will post a link for "Linux Incompatibility List."

  2. "costs that go along with being an MS'er"

    Have you tried Linux yet?

    Vista vs. Mepis

"With both systems completely idle except for their memory map programs and the screenshot program, MEPIS has a memory footprint of less than 100MB, while Vista is pounding down its foot with over half-a-gigabyte of RAM."

The story is not finished yet, but here is what is done.

  3. My 2 cents: We should take extraordinary measures to protect children from themselves.

    Whaddaya think?

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......we were always outside playing!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

  4. There has to be more details to this story.

If the gun wasn't stored properly the parents are probably the one who got in trouble.(along with the kid, I don't care how dumb a 12 year old is, they've had enough time to learn you don't shoot people)

I was comparing to the case with the teacher using this analogy. The School board/Principal or whoever is not the one in trouble, it is the baby-sitter.

Re: Notification of Copyright Infringement Claims

    CASE ID#

    Dear Sir/Madam:

We have asked your Internet Service Provider to forward this letter to you in advance of our filing a lawsuit against you in federal court for copyright infringement. We represent a number of large record companies, including EMI Recorded Music, SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, as well as all of their subsidiaries and affiliates ('Record Companies'), in pursuing claims of copyright infringement against individuals who have illegally uploaded and downloaded sound recordings on peer-to-peer networks.

We have gathered evidence that you have been infringing copyrights owned by the Record Companies. We are attaching to this letter a sample of the sound recordings you were found distributing via the AresWarezUS (Ares) peer-topeer [sic] network. In total, you were found distributing 321 audio files, a substantial number of which are sound recordings controlled by the Record Companies.

The reason we are sending this letter to you in advance of filing suit is to give you the opportunity to settle these claims as early as possible. If you contact us within the next twenty (20) calendar days, we will offer to settle the claims for a significantly reduced amount compared to what we will offer to settle them for after we file suit or compared to the judgment amount a court may enter against you. If you are interested in resolving this matter now, please contact our Settlement Information Line at 913-234-8181 or, alternatively, you may settle this matter immediately online at www.p2plawsuits.com, using the CASE ID# that appears at the top of this letter.

In deciding whether you wish to settle this matter, here are some things you should consider:

    * The Copyright Act imposes a range of statutory damages for copyright infringement. The minimum damages under the law is $750 for each Page 2 copyrighted recording that has been infringed ('shared'). The maximum damage award can be substantially more. In addition to damages, you may also be responsible for paying the legal fees we incur in order to pursue these claims, and are subject to having an injunction entered against you prohibiting you from further infringing activity.

    * preserve evidence that relates to the claims against you. In this case, that means, at a minimum, the entire library of recordings that you have made available for distribution as well as any recordings you have downloaded, need to be maintained as evidence. Further, you should not attempt to delete the peer-to-peer programs from your system - though you must stop them from operating. For information on how to do this, you may visit www.musicunited.org.

This is a serious matter and to the extent you have any questions, we strongly encourage you to contact us to ask those questions. Finally, if you would like more information regarding music downloading/file sharing and peer-to-peer networks, please visit www.p2plawsuits.com.

IF WE DO NOT HEAR FROM YOU WITHIN TWENTY (20) CALENDAR DAYS FROM THE DATE OF THIS LETTER, THEN WE WILL FILE SUIT AGAINST YOU IN FEDERAL COURT.

We are not your lawyers, nor are we giving you legal advice. We urge you to consult with an attorney immediately to advise you on your rights and responsibilities.

    Sincerely,

    Donald J. Kelso"

  6. "Who should your computer take its orders from? Most people think their computers should obey them, not obey someone else. With a plan they call "trusted computing", large media corporations (including the movie companies and record companies), together with computer companies such as Microsoft and Intel, are planning to make your computer obey them instead of you. (Microsoft's version of this scheme is called "Palladium".) Proprietary programs have included malicious features before, but this plan would make it universal."

  7. Can you imagine, doing someone a favor by babysitting their 12 year old, who was allowed to have a friend over, hearing a shot, finding one of the children dead from a gunshot wound, then being charged with endangering childrens' lives? Meanwhile, it's not your house, you had no idea there was a gun there at all nor whether it was stored properly or not. Only in America. I hope.

  8. I see where they are selling upgrade versions of Vista. I assume you have to install this over XP. So if later on your hard drive fails or something happens that requires a reinstall of your operating system you have to reinstall XP than install the Vista Upgrade again?

Or you can install the upgrade twice.

  9. Attempting connection to your computer. . .

Shields UP! is now attempting to contact the Hidden Internet Server within your PC. It is likely that no one has told you that your own personal computer may now be functioning as an Internet Server with neither your knowledge nor your permission. And that it may be serving up all or many of your personal files for reading, writing, modification and even deletion by anyone, anywhere, on the Internet!

Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!

One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.

Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.

All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.

Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single packet ? solicited or otherwise ? was received from your system as a result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very nice

1 router is all I got on. No other firewall.

Is it possible to fail any of these tests?

  10. here is mine:

    93923763.png

Signed up for a Home 512/128 connection so not too bad I suppose.

I'd say that is pretty good. I don't think I've ever seen the actual as there is going to be a little bit of a loss somewhere. Not even my providers test has given me the actual.

  11. I'll have to test it on my old computer which is doing nothing but collecting dust in a corner. I'd like to find a lightweight non-bloated, non-Windows OS to use solely for music (.mp3, .ogg, etc).

Thats one of the benefits of Linux. Adding new life to older set-ups. No need for anti-anything.

Here is another new one to try on the new comp after deciding you like it on the old comp after 2 hours. lol

  12. OK, so I got a little edgy (eft) this morning and installed Ubuntu.

PITA. Wouldn't work no matter what I did. So I opened up PCLinuxOS, located the formatting tools, formatted a partition to Journalized FS (EXT 3), tried again. No problem. Exact same settings. Just seems to want to be formatted first.

For anyone interested, Edgy Eft comes stock with more programs installed than PCLinuxOS, although both can add oodles more. Free.

    I recommend trying either.

I don't know what comes on the g-parted liveCD, but you may want to get it first, if installing Ubuntu, partition and format, if it formats, before installing the OS. No need if installing PCLinuxOS.

    Tri-boot now, no problems.

  13. That is a fantastic link JD. Ive got a minimum of 2.2 Mbps at the moment, which I`m quite happy with, but I now know from your link that my local exchange (Durham), is being upgraded to 8 Mbps in the very near future.

Interesting though, that at this moment in time my Download Speed is 1996 Kbps, and my Upload Speed is 242 Kbps. Thanks XPSP2 for the link: http://speedtest.net/

    :)

Edit: Did another check here: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

And my speeds are actually a bit higher than is usual with 2.2 Mbps.

    No problem.

Sometimes can be useful to see if comp. is working right. Just have to keep in mind time of day, weather etc... These things will affect speed. Using to compare, do so at same time of day you used before. Speedtest.net also stores previous tests although I don't know how many or for how long. Using a different connection point on their site makes a difference as well. If I use Toronto, Ontario, Canada(one hundred miles from here) I get just under 10Mb/s, if I choose one way down south, usually drops to about 2Mb/s.

  14. Here you go andavari:

    http://www.tuxmachines.org/gallery/pclos2007b2

    I tried that distro a while ago.(not 2007 it was .9 something)

I couldn't get the computer to boot once I installed it for some reason(I installed it 3 times). The live cd worked fine though.

To be honest I like mepis the best out of all the distros I've tried. Ubuntu and Kubuntu are good too, but mepis supported the hardware I put it on better.(tohsiba laptop.) Thy are both getting better though.

    Nice link

    .93-Big Daddy

    .94-PCLinuxOS

They have better laptop support now. I have seen mention of IBM and Sony in my menus, not sure about Toshiba.

Ubuntu, Simply Mepis, PCLinuxOS are supposed to be the best for new users of Linux. One more I think but can't recall the name of though.

I like PCLinuxOS because of my lack of computer experience. I have not had to use a command prompt yet. Comparable to a bundled computer I guess except it is easier to get rid of the unwanted apps. But basically it is ready to go. Configures internet connection automatically. Comes pre-installed with Mozilla FF 2.0.0.1 (might be 2.0.0.2 now as I think final release is out, I started with test release 2) and Thunderbird.

Link here shows a video about updating and installing apps. Scroll down about 1/3 of page. He has a nice desktop too.

  15. Read that article you linked to JD. Seems that everyone but Microsoft realise they`ve taken too much for granted.

Found this article on another page, that you might find interesting. (Assuming you haven`t read it already)

    Linux article

Would like to get my Ubuntu working, but it seems a bit fiddly to get my USB ADSL modem working with it. keep putting it off.

Sods law tells me that someones gonna post now and tell me its a piece of cake.

    Hope so.

    Regards

    Try PCLinuxOS.

Formatted-swap file created-installed-dual boot system- surfing with FF less than 15 min. And I am new to computers.

I already had a partition ready to go except the formatting.

Should something go wrong, full re-install<10 min.

    http://www.pclinuxos.com/page.php?7

    http://www.pclinuxonline.com/wiki/HomePage

Works off of the LiveCD too.

Say hello to the 21st Century.
