  1. Every now and again my username and password gets erased for NOD32 and I have to reenter them. Could this be CCleaner that is erasing that information? I have added custon folders (/temp, /temp internet files/ prefetch, /ehome) Could they be the culprit?
  2. A very big THANK YOU for this release, and all others. This eliminates the need for me to buy Tracks Eraser Pro, or similar. I'm off to spread the word....
  3. Does anyone know if Burnatonce supports mp3pro files or not. That is the one thing that is keeping me from using it and is why I use DeepBurner Pro. I hope if they are not supported that they will be soon.
  4. When will secure erasing be implemented in CCleaner?
  5. I seem to be having registry problems. After cleaning the registry (with more than one cleaner) there are listed entries that I cannot clean because I have insufficent permissions. If I manually give myself permission to delete these entries (and do so manually via regedit) than my system fails to log my in after a reboot; I am logged in for about a second and then instantly logged back out. I have been having problems with my icons. I tried to apply a custom set (via StyleXP). Some icons to change, but the defailt folder icons does not. So I thought that it might be the registry that was preventing my icon application. Then I ran in to the above problem.
  6. I was excited to try this version. It did find things that neith adaware, spybot, spysweeper nor counterspy could find; favorites hijacker and 2search. (The malware was in locked files) However when I went to clean the infections the program simpy quit; crashed without warning . I was using 1.0325 beta. Also, the tabs are not readable if the user is using certain skins.
  7. Agreed. But remember, routers are not free. This setup is all freeware. I believe in layered defenses because there is no single program that is 100% effective.

To resolve that problem you can try using unlocker; which tries to "kill" all process connection of a file to a process. In your case it sounds like javhook.dll is still being used by explorer.exe, so unlocker would severe the connection(s) between the two allowing you to delete it. It will add item to your context menu, so just find the file, right-click on it and unlock the process. Find it here: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
  9. Well there are AVs you can get for less than $40 like NOD32 (with student discount), Dr Web ($23.00), or VBA32 ($23.40). If you have ever used any of these program, especially Dr Web 4.33 or VBA32 you'd know there are not bloatware, as is Norton, Mcafee home or F-secure. That is true; there are decent free applications out there which is what I was trying to point out. I do not like norton, or any symantec product for that matter, so that example doesn't work for me. I don't like the idea of an all-in-one suite. I prefer stand-alone products. But I understand what you are saying. An example of a completely freeware setup is below (all are necessary): Antivir: Antivirus Ewido free: On-Demand trojan/malware scanner Kerio 2.15: Rul-based firewall) MASA/Ad-aware/spybot/Hijack This!/Spyware Blaster (use them all for complete protection): Spywware RegWatcher: Configurable Registry Protection (http://www.jacobsm.com/mjsoft.htm) CCleaner HostManager: Hosts File ProcessGuard: Limits application rights Any non-IRE based browser It is possible but it takes alot more work to be secure. The ost imortant aspect of the setup if the AV.
  10. The new version of Etrust is better, but I prefer CA corporate if I had to choose between the two. Remember that Etrust in not freeware; I believe the year license, offered by Microsoft, is no longer offered . If it were up to me I would advise using KAV 5/6 beta, NOD32 2.5, or VBA32. But none of them are freeware. Freeware, no matter what product, is not as good as payware products
  11. That has changed; AntiVir now offers automatic incremental updates. See this threat at Wilders: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=91636 As far as Etrust in concerned, I have used it before and found it to be very easy to use to rather high on system resources, not able to clean everything and mediocrea at detection. Also, AVAST, as good as it may be for a freebe, is very high on system resources and can bring your system to a crawl.
  12. Everyone on this site seems to be advising Etrust or AVG and I can't seem to figure out why. If you're going to go with one of them you might as well use a pre-2005 norton product. The detection rates on these products in general are very bad. See: http://www.av-comparatives.org If you are certain you need a free AV, I would choose AntiVir, which has vaslty improved recently. If you choose to use a parware AV, which I recommend, then talk to me about options later. There are really only two freeware apps that should be considered; AVAST home edition and AntiVir 6.3. As far as firewalls, I think outpost and kerio 2.15 are both very good firewalls. Outpost uses more resources but if more user friendly. Kerio just plain works, if configured correctly with the right ruleset. This is a good ruleset to start with: http://www.dslreports.com/r0/download/6171...cementFinal.zip Keep in mind that kerio 2.15 will not past many leaktests; development has been discontinued.
  13. For some reason I seem to be having problems with any 2.xx version of OpenOffice. The margins are just slightly of. Instead of one inch margins on all side, as is the default, mine are less, probably 2cm. I have tried everything I can think of to correct this issue and have tried other software, Abiword, Ability Office, WordPerfect, and none of them have the same problems. The margins there are fine. Does anyone have any ideas of maybe a bug confrimation?
  14. Firewall: I think if you are looking for the best firewall I WOULD NOT go with Zone Alarm. The prottection it offers is goo, not great, but the price in terms of system resources it uses make ZA just not worth it. ZA cannot seem to decrease the requirements and boot time of TrueVector and until that happens I cannot recommend it. Sorry to others who think this is a good software firewall. I can say that the best firewalls out there are rule-based, such as Kerio 2.15 and LooknStop. I've heard great things about Jetico Personal Firewall. Outpost Pro is kind of a weird design. It is both application based and rule-based, you are given the oppertunity to create rules for applications when prompted. Outpost uses more resources then say LnS but not quite as many as ZA. Remember that no software firewall can ever be as dependable as a hardware firewall/router and should be used in addition to one. Spyware: I am not sure if I agree that WinPatrol should be considered a fireall, it is not one at all. It monitor different areas that malware (virii, trojans, spyware, etc.) might use such as IE helpers and system processes. I would highly recomend this program. I would also suggest getting the plus version as, new with 9.2 (9.7 is out now) is alerts the user in real time, rather than plling every specified amount of time. I don't think there is any better anti-spyware scanner than MS antispyware 1.0 beta. I would recomend this especially since every other scanner that offers real-time protection you must pay for. This I think is a must have. Antivirus: I mention this now only because you mentioned you needed to purchase one. Just because a company has the best advertising department does not mean they have the best product. That means, right off the bat throw away Norton, Mcafee, and Trend Micro (PC-cillin') There are not bad product but given there general size vs protection ratio I say get rid of them. There is an ongoing debate as to what is the best antivirus. Ususally the choices are between NOD32, Kaspersky 4/5 and sometimes Dr Web 4.32b. You would be well protected with any one of these three. I use NOD32, so my vote goes to it. Kaspersky (KAV) has great signature detection with adequate hueristics (the ability to detect unknown virii or virii that are not on "the list". It can slow doen your system though as it uses a lot of resources. Dr Web takes up very little (the least) resources and has a very good (sometimes too good) hueristics engine. NOD32 has a great hueristics engine while using very little resources. Rant done.
  15. I've tried everything from Wordperferct Office 12, Openoffice.org 1.4 (and beta 2.0), ever M$ Word. But I have never seen an office suite that can do so much while still being incredably small in size (22 MB to download and 50 MB installed) Ability Office does everything I need it to without using the resources of Openoffice.org. It has a word processor, spreadsheet app, presentation at, photo editor, drawing app, and a data base app. All of which natively supports M$ products and with no further configuration (instead of OO's proprietary format). I have never had a problem with compatability, as I have with OO. There were a couple of things that bothered me about OO: 1. OO/Staroffice changed the install procedure in 2.0 ( and staroffice) and now takes a lot longer to install. 2. It uses a lot of resources (RAM) 3. There is no grammar checker; I am a graduate student at Arizona State and I need a grammar checker. Mainly I need it for the ocassional repetative word that I just can't see. OO doesn't have one. 4. Ability allows me to change spelling errors via a right-click contex menu, OO does not. That's why I prefer Ability to OO. I found it for $20 on ebay. Yes, I know: freeware vs shareware but it's worth it to me.
  16. It would be really nice if CCleaner was able to ckean the histories of Ability Office (www.ability.com) I don't really want it to have a record of the most recently worked on documents.
  17. If your going to go the route of using another IE based browser, I strong recomend Deepnet Explorer. It blocks popups, content (a la Firefox's adblock), and blocks phising attempts. Plus, and this is something I haven't seen in any other IE alternative, it can remember form information and password without using 3rd party software, namely roboform.
  18. Hardware firewalls are nice but can not take the place of software firewalls. You cannot have application filtering with them. Also, you cannot have some of the feartures of Outpost (ad blocking, reffer blocking, cookie blocking, etc) Also hardware firewalls, for whatever reason, always respong to ICMP echo pings, so you would not be COMPLETELY stealth. FYI, PeerGuardian is not a firewall it is an IP address blocker, and a damn good one at that (v2)
  19. If you are adimate about staying with a freeware software firewall, my vote would go towards kerio (KPF 2.15). Find it here: http://www.kerio.com/dwn/kpf2-en-win.exe That is hands down the best freeware rule-based firewall there is. If you chose that one be sure and get help with your rule-set (PM me if you need help) If you feel like spending a little cash and purchase a shareware firewall, I would strongly consider Agnitum Outpost Pro (www.agnitum.com). There is another option, which I personally use. Research LooknStop a.k.a. LnS (www.looknstop.com) It is the best firewall I have ever seen. It is rule based (as better firewalls are) and haave an extremely small footprint (uses little system resources). PM more is you want further details.
  20. I tried what you said, both of them actually. Neither of them worked. Even in the new account the installer had the same issues.
  21. Recently I've been having trouble with the windows installer. There are a couple of applications that when I try to install I am presented with this message: "Error 1324: The folder path 'Program Files' contains an invalid character." There is also a messge that says: "This isntallation package could not be opened." I have searched extensively for a solution to these problems and have tried to update Windows installer, but that didn't work. I understand that these problems can be solved by changing the registry, either adding or changing the value of a key, only I don't know where or what to change. Any help would be appreciated.
  22. I've narrowed the problem down to two, CC or RegHeal. I don't know what else to do. I've written RegHeal support but have yet to hear an answer. Does anyone know what registry keys could effect wallpapers or screensavers? Maybe I can add them to the esclusion list. Perhaps it is something in "custom folders" that I'm deleting.
  23. At least I think they are CC related. After I run the reistry cleaner, as well as another registry cleaner, and reboot my system my wallpaper is no longer there and is just dark gray. My screensaver changes back to the default XP one as well. I don't know if this has anything to do with CC (cleaner ore registry because I run them both at the same time) or other products) I mention it here because I have narrowed the problem down to either CC, RegHeal, and/or TweakI. If anyone can help me that would be appreciated because this problem is very annoying.
