  1. Thanks very much Andavari for the feedback!

    Fonts/Text Accessibility:
    * Bigger fonts/text inside CCleaner, or the ability for users to change the size and even the color.
    * Properly space and wrap text in the Results window so that it doesn't run off.

Yes! We'll be improving the cleaning UI and, more generally, building in flexibility in the UI so that content is responsive (window resizing, language changes, font resizing) and can support other customization such as light/dark themes.

    Registry Cleaner:
    * Fulfill the once promised move of the Registry Cleaner into the Tools section, and have a setting or tickbox to disable finding anything in C:\Windows.
    * Registry Cleaner should be able to create a System Restore Point if the service is enabled on the system.

Yes to #1! We may even do this in CC5 ahead of CC6. #2 makes sense but would probably come further down the line.

    Bug Fix:
    * Fix the random cosmetic doubling bug that lists cleaners twice.

This doesn't have to wait for CC6. Can you help me with a link to where this is reported?

    Duplicate Finder:
    * State that the hash (MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256) or whatever it is that CCleaner uses matches on dups.
Example 1: SHA-256 matches, these files are identical.
Example 2: SHA-256 does not match, these files are not identical.
    * Do not scan for dups in C:\Windows, AppData, ProgramData, i.e.; areas that shouldn't be messed with.

There are many improvements we can make to Duplicate finder. This would probably come later down the line in CC6.

Drive Wiper / Secure Deletion / Wipe Free Space:
    * Grey out the box so that selecting NAND flash based media isn't possible (eMMC, SD Memory Card, SSD, USB Flash Drive, etc).
    * Fulfill the once promised option to override what a drive type actually is since they are sometimes incorrectly identified, i.e., when an HDD is identified as an SSD or vice-versa.

    We'll look into #1 for CC5, and evaluate #2 for CC5/6.

    * Update/auto-update similar to how antivirus does to download new files without needing a new setup file, i.e.; CCleaner.exe, CCleaner64.exe, language files, etc.
    * Or use Push Updates, example: https://network-box.com/faq-push-update-e

Decoupling cleaning definition updates from full exe replacements is something we plan for CC6.

Rework or switch the installer since NSIS has way too many failures both installing and now also uninstalling, others are Inno Setup, InstallShield, or whatever, or make your own.
    Here's a short list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_installation_software

We have been researching installer tech for some months now. Although lightweight, NSIS is fairly cumbersome to work with. We want to strike the right balance. Either way, installer tech is likely to change for CC6.

    GUI Themes:
Ability to change colors or apply themes, both official and user/community created.

Yes to the first, the second one is an interesting suggestion but further down the to do list.

    Community Winapp2.ini Improvements:
Remove the necessity to use often forgotten weird characters, such as: \|
    Example, this: %ProgramFiles%\SomeApp\|*.log
Would become this (as Windows see's it): %ProgramFiles%\SomeApp\*.log

We can look into this for CC5.

Auto maximize the CCleaner GUI window on displays that are now too small to fit the standard window size:
    Inspired by this topic:

Thanks, we'll evaluate this for CC5. In CC6 the UI will  be built to resize and reshape as needed.

  2. Hi everyone, I'm pleased to share that we are now embarking on our next major version update - CCleaner 6.0 - and want it to be built in line with your needs.

Please use this thread to help us to understand what improvements or totally new features you'd like to see in the next evolution of CCleaner! :)

  3. Hi there, we originally began by supporting the browsers but the frequency that they update and their different types of updates makes them challenging to stay in line with. We found we were telling users that there were updates when there weren't (because the browsers already updated themselves) and so on. We avoid antivirus software for a similar reason.

We'll do some investigation into how to improve Software Updater to include more applications. For example, it may be reassuring to show which apps are up to date, even if CCleaner won't try to interfere with that app's updating process. We can also add a suggestion button to that screen.

  5. We've fixed the issue where the Smart Cleaning could be turned off by toggling the Automatic Updates setting. This means CCleaner should only run in the background if either Autoupdates or Smart Cleaning (or both) are enabled. We deemed this the more serious bug so we fixed this first.

The dump issue will take a bit more time to resolve, but it is under investigation. The dump files are not particularly large but when we apply that fix we will clean up any dumps generated.

  6. 20 hours ago, geraldr said:

CCleaner 5.74 Application error (see attached screen shots) There were too many memory dump to post.

I uninstalled 5.74. Downloaded a clean copy reinstalled it and got the same problem.

Also 5.74 gives an error trying copy and paste the serial number for registering ccleaner.

Found an older version and will be using it  until there is a fix.

I have been unable to block the update message. I renaming the updater to see that works.

    Hi geraldr,

I'm sorry for the difficulties. Can you tell us when you were getting the application error, this part seems a bit unclear and it will help us to diagnose the problem.

  8. Hi D2S, this is not something I have heard reported before, although it seems plausible that the Administrator change could have effected things. CCleaner needs these privileges to do most of its cleaning. I would suggest uninstalling and reinstalling CCleaner and seeing if that resolves the issue. You may want to back up your CCleaner settings which are stored in the Registry before you uninstall:

    • Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Piriform\CCleaner
    • Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Piriform\CCleaner
  9. Hi there. I'd just like to add to what Dave has said above, to explain how this works. To check for updates automatically, something needs to run in the background. The update checks occur once every 12 hours, or immediately if you launch CCleaner.

CCUpdate.exe is an emergency updater. It is effective but it doesn't have any interface which can get confusing, so we prefer to only use it in emergencies. It's for use when no other method will effectively keep our users' safe. It's very effective at securing users, but not the best in terms of explaining what's going on.

We understand that some users would prefer not to have something running in the background, whatever its purpose, so over the past weeks we have been sending notices regarding this change to give our customers a heads up. These notices won't have been delivered to anyone who has blocked the systems CCleaner depends on to communicate with its users.

The background service we use for Automatic Updates is also used for Scheduled Cleaning (automated cleaning) and Smart Cleaning (contextual cleaning triggers, such as cleaning when you close your browser). If you do not want this process running in the background, disable the things that depend on them: Scheduling, Smart Cleaning and Automatic Updates.

Lastly on the topic of data: we send some basic telemetry via the background process for error reporting purposes (read which data here). For example, if suddenly something causes a number of CCleaner users to crash, we would like to be aware of this and to respond as quickly as possible. Bugs like this typically happen when something about the environment changes (such as a new browser version or an update to Windows) and CCleaner isn't aware of this change so goes about its business as normal. On top of that, we optionally collect data about how the application is used (e.g. which features are used and how often). This helps us to understand which features matter most to our users so we can prioritise them when we are deciding which bugs to fix or conducting customer research. If you don't want this, you can opt out in the privacy settings (Options > Privacy). We do this to deliver a better app, but we understand that some people may prefer not to be part of that process. It's really up to you.

  10. What's New in Version 5.74

Note, this version received a small patch update (v5.74.8198) to fix a settings bug. This patch update will be applied automatically if automatic updates have been disabled.

This version comes jam-packed full of exciting improvements for all our users!

Free users of CCleaner: REJOICE! We have extended automatic updates to all our users! Once version 5.74 or later is installed, you will no longer need to visit the website to update CCleaner - the app will keep itself updated automatically! 🙂

We want everyone to enjoy using the latest and safest version of CCleaner, including people who may not have updated in some time. That’s why we have marked this version as an Important Update, which means we will be gradually rolling it out to existing users over the coming weeks. If you don’t want to wait, click here to update right away. (Find out more).

We have also made some essential cleaning compatibility improvements for Chromium browsers. Before you clean CCleaner Browser, Google Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Opera GX, Avast Secure Browser or Vivaldi, please make sure you’re running this version.

    Changes in this Release

    • This release contains an essential session cleaning compatibility update for Chromium browsers such as CCleaner Browser, Google Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Opera GX, Avast Secure Browser and Vivaldi.

    Automatic Updates

    • Updates to CCleaner will now be applied automatically in CCleaner Free.
    • You can review your Update Preferences in the ‘Options’ → ‘Updates’ menu.
    • If automatic updates are enabled, CCleaner will run in the background and check for them twice daily (if you run CCleaner it will always check for an update first).

    Update Preferences

    • We have simplified the ‘Options’ → ‘Updates’ menu down to two settings: one for controlling automatic updates and another for controlling update notifications.

    CCleaner Professional

    • If your license has expired, we will occasionally show you a reminder when you run CCleaner.

    • We fixed a bug where text in warning message boxes was highlighted.
