  1. I guess that it would have been much simpler if I had just said that I wanted to enter text right on the photo image.

However, I have downloaded Irfanview and played around with one of the images. It has allowed me to enter the text right onto the photo, and that is what I am interested in doing. So it looks as though Ifranview will suit my needs.

I'll take a look at ACDSee. I have read that a good program for this purpose (for $50) is Breezebrowser.

    Thanks for the helpful comments.

  2. I just bought my first digital camera last week, and I want to store my pics properly so that I will have dates and other essential info in future. I want to try to get started properly so that I don't have to redo things again later on.

I am storing the photos that I have taken to date in Picasa2. This is a great program; however, when I burn the images to a CD, I lose all of the captions or labels. From some reading that I have done, it seems that I need a different program that will retain the labels somewhere on the image (dates, names, etc.) for future reference.

I have searched around a bit for a free program, and from some of the past comments in this forum, people seem to like Irfanview.

Question: Would Irfanview be a good SW program for me to get started with?

    Thanks

  3. We are using IE. I have cleaned out the Inbox, sent mail, and delete files, but that doesn't seem to help. Yes, it sounds as though it may be a problem with the server rather than our pc.

I'll call the company tech support people and see what they have to say.

    Thanks.

  4. I wonder if someone could tell me how to resolve this problem.

I have Windows XP and DSL. All of the emails in my wife's account are being bounced and she is getting the following messages:

"A message was sent to you that was returned to the sender (bounced) because it would have caused your mailbox quota to be exceeded."

This suggests that the one particular e-mail had a large attachment or something that was just too big. However, all of her emails are being bounced even though they contain nothing more than a very short message. The ones that I have sent to her from my account are also bounced and I am getting the message that "The user account is temporarily over quota."

Her mail box is empty, and I have also deleted everything in the sent and delete files.

Any suggestions on how this could be remedied? As it is, she is not able to get any emails.

    Thanks.

  5. I was wondering if anyone cleans out the Prefetch Files?

To access these, you enter C:\Windows\Prefetch. You can safely delete all of these files, or at least I have been doing this for about 5 years.

As I understand it, these files build up and can slow down the PC. Someone told me about 5 years ago that these should be deleted once in a while. I delete them a couple of times each year.

Any thoughts on the removal of these?

  6. Could this be the beginning of a major turnaround for LinuX? By that I mean that I am wondering if this could eventually lead to Linux eventually becoming a major competitor. I just can't imagine a company like Dell putting Ubuntu on their PCs if they aren't performing properly. I guess that time will tell.

    Dell Embraces Ubuntu Linux

Dell will preinstall Ubuntu Linux on some of its desktop PCs; details to be announced.

  7. Thanks for the links and all the info. I really appreciate it. I am definitely going to give it a try, but I think that I'll wait as advised. In the mean time, I'll do some reading and learn as much as I can about it.

    Thank you very much.

  8. That sounds easy enough. There seems to be more books and magazines on Linux available now, so I think that I should be able to learn as I go along.

I have Nero burning Rom, so that should allow me to burn the cd that I'll need. I think I'll give it a try.

    Thank you very much.

  9. I am interested in experimenting with Linux. I have Windows XP, and I think that there is lots of room on my hard drive. However, I don't have a lot of computer savy.

As I understand it, I can download Ubuntu on my desk top.

My questions: If I do this,

    1. is there any danger of it messing up my PC, or should Linux just be loaded on a separate computer?

2 I have DSL, will Linux interfere at all with my internet service provider?

    Thanks.

  10. I also used the AVG trial version 7.5, but I found that it let some tracking junk through. So I switched to NOD32, and I find it a lot more effective at catching thngs. I also used Spysweeper, and with the two of these programs, I never have any problems at all.

However, based on my experience, and everything that I have read, I think that AVG and NOD32 are the top two programs on the market.

  11. This all sounds pretty complicated for me. I downloaded Andavari's exclude.ini file, but I haven't got the slightest idea how to use it.

I think that I'll just use CCleaner on a regular basis and then scan once a month or so with the old Reg Seeker Program. As CeeCee pointed out to me in another post, the old program damaged my Flash Player, but uninstalling and downloading a new version is a bit of a pain, but not a big problem. In the mean time, I will try to learn more about the program files in the pc so that I can identify the ones that I shouldn't be deleting if Reg Seeker is used.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions folks.

  12. I installed the latest version of Reg Seeker and CCleaner yesterday and scanned my pc with them. RS found around 50 scrap files that I deleted and I forget how many CC cleaned up. I was under the impression that everything was working just fine until this morning when my wife went into her account to check her e-mail.

OE would not open up in her account and Windows provided two messages: one saying that she might be out of memory or your disk is full (ox80004005). The second said that "OE could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized. OE may not be installed incorrectly."

However, the e-mail in my account worked just fine.

After trying a number of things that didn't work, I came to the conclusion that one of these programs must have damaged one or more of the files in her e-mail account. I was able to remedy the problem by doing a system restore and her e-mail is working just fine again. So there is little doubt in my mind that one of them caused the damage, and I rather suspect that Reg Seeker is the culprit as I have used CC now for a couple of years without any problems at all. But all is well again.

Using programs like Reg Seeker and other registry cleaners can do a lot of damage if they are not used carefully, especially when they are used by folks like me who have limited knowledge of pcs.

My question: Is it really necessary to use these registry cleaners? Would CCleaner be sufficient if used, say once a week?

    Thanks

  13. You know something, CeeCee, I think that you just hit the nail on the head (if I can be forgiven for using a chliche).

I hadn't thought of that before, but I do use RegSeeker and CCleaner. I had to uninstall and download FlashPlayer again on Friday afternoon, and now that you mentioned it, I now recall that I had used RegSeeker just prior to doing it.

I think that you are right, and I have been unwittingly causing my own troubles.

Thank you very much for drawing my attention to this. At least if it happens again, I'll know what is causing it.

  14. Thank you, RRidgely. That's exactly what I needed. I really appreciate the help.

And I would also like to mention that I really appreciate all of your good efforts on this forum. Your continuing contributions have helped make this the great forum that it is.

  15. Sorry folks. I just found out how to uninstall it. I have uninstalled it and downloaded a new version and it is now working fine. This is the second time that I have had to do this, and I don't know what the problem is. Perhaps this is something that I will just have to live with.

    Thanks.

  16. My flash player has stopped working and when I try to access an online video, say YouTube, I get the following message:

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player. Click here to get the latest flash player.

I had this problem before, and I found a website that was provided in this forum, I believe, and it permitted me to uninstall and then reinstall Adobe Flashplayer and that fix the problem.

I have tried to find Flash Player by going to the Control Panel, but I can't find it there. I had thought that if I could find it, I would just uninstall and then reload it again as that worked last time.

Any ideas on how I can fix this problem?

    Thanks.

  17. Does anyone know if one of these programs can be loaded onto a memory stick? I use a couple of these sticks, and I have information on them that I wouldn't want anyone to see.

I know that some of the newer memory sticks provide for password protection, but I just thought that if one of these programs could be loaded onto the stick, it would protect information.

    Thanks.

  18. The August 2006 issue of PCWorld has an article on this topic and recommends a number of good ones. The article is called Web News Wranglers

Maybe what you are looking for are the RSS feeders such as Awasue Personal Edition, Rojo and SharpReader. All of these are free and mentioned. You can probably find the complete article by going to the PCWorld website. The article was written by Ryan Singel.

A couple mentioned in the article that I like are Digg and Reddit.

If you are looking for a rather objective online newspaper, I would recommend Asia Times Online.

    I hope this helps.
