  1. I guess I don't understand it. It says I have 1 medium risk vulnerability "Mozilla XMLSerializer Same Origin Policy Violation Vulnerability (bid5766)" and recommends I should upgrade to Mozilla 1.0.2 or later. The only Mozilla app I'm using is FireFox 2.0.0.5 so I don't know what I'm supposed to do.
  2. Mind if I hijack this thread for a moment with a question? I recently uninstalled PC Tools Firewall Plus. Not the new version but their first one. Version 1.0 maybe? Anyways I had trouble with it and AVG AV off and on ever since I installed Firewall Plus. Various AVG updates would cause the firewall problems. The two would work harmoniously and then there'd be a big AVG update and afterwards AVG simply could and would not connect to the internet for further updates. I like AVG and I've used if for years now and since I'm loyal I ditched the Firewall Plus, no one on their forum or the AVG forum could fix my problem, and turned the Windows Firewall back on. I've noticed that every now and then I'll hear a "boing" tone and a red shield icon will appear down in the bottom right of my screen (taskbar?). My computer will make that "boing" tone, the red shield will appear, and then in less than 2 seconds it disappears. It's the same red shield you see if you go into the control panel to turn the Windows Firewall off. My question is is my firewall turning off on it's own or is this normal behavior? I go into Control Panel and it always shows the firewall on. Thanks!
  3. Against my better judgment I went ahead and installed the new Ad-Aware 2007 a couple of days ago. If it aint broke don't fix it, is my motto, so why did I do it? Well I just updated it and it said there was some software update, not just the definitions update, and asked if I wanted to update so I updated it and then it began to act weird. Ad-Aware screens started to pop up and on the bottom of my screen where it shows what programs you have open it had two Ad-Aware tabs but when I'd click on them nothing was there and I couldn't make the tabs go away. Had to reboot to get the tabs gone and the extra Ad-Aware windows to go away. And on a related note, yesterday there was a big update for AVG Antispyware Free Version 7.5. I updated it and something about that went haywire. After the big update a message popped up that some file or another couldn't be found and told me I'd have to reinstall AVG Antispyware 7.5 so I had to download and then reinstall the thing. Seems to be working OK now. When the latest and greatest Spybot S&D comes out I think I'll pass on it. I mean if it aint broke don't fix it, right?

    Ron Paul

Congress voted to give Bush war powers based on faulty intelligence for sure, and hogwash and lies perhaps. It's sad that many Americans were led to believe that the attacks on the World Trade Center on 9-11 were the responsibility of Saddam Hussein and Iraq. Trumped up accusations coming directly from the White House persuaded many Americans that invading Iraq was necessary. I would love to see the US pull out right now. There's no end game to this silly, bloody war. We're in the middle of a civil war in Iraq, a place we need not be. I served in Vietnam. I saw my brothers killed and injured on a regular basis, and for what? For politics, pure and simple. It pains me deeply to see our nation's leaders still using the US's military as pawns. Sadly, history was not learned. We can't pull our troops out now because our leaders would look stupid, and rightly so. So every day one, two, three, ten, how many more of our finest and bravest are killed so that our leadership can save face? There's not a Republican or a Democrat I would vote for. I don't believe there is an independent candidate I would vote for either. Politics in the US is bleak, and the system is utterly broken and corrupted. I've always, always, always done my civic duty and voted, and yet I am seriously at the point now where I don't think voting for a President or a Congressman/woman is worth my trouble or will do any good at all. The fact that I feel that way about the country I fought for absolutely makes me sick. I don't usually post anything regarding politics as it's generally an exercise in futility, but I'm bored today. I don't mean to debate either, I guess I was just venting. Rridgely, I always just assumed you were British.

  6. Thanks. I kinda figured it was operator error
  7. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but when I enter ".mp3" into the "Find" box and then click "Scan" the wording in the "Find" box reverts back to "Filename or path" and then Recuva scans and shows every file type, not just mp3 files. Shouldn't it only show mp3's if that's what I specify in the "Find" box? Thanks! Using Recuva 1.01.069 Windows XP SP2
  8. In the US several states allow a mother to drop off her unwanted newborn at designated places and just walk away, no questions asked. Hospital emergency rooms, police stations, fire stations, etc. I believe Australia has similar laws. It's not an ideal situation, but it's better than the mother just throwing the baby in a river or in a garbage dumpster.
  9. The other day I got home and noticed the hourglass icon was a different color than usual. The top and bottom of it was rather blue. Some program, AVG or Windows or something I can't remember now, had updated and I had a pop-up telling me I needed to restart my computer. Is that why the hourglass was a different color? Is it blue if Windows is waiting on me and the usual color if I'm waiting on Windows? Thanks.
  10. Oops, I forgot to untick the option to load the Yahoo Toolbar when I downloaded and installed the latest release of CCleaner. I went into control panel's Add/Remove and removed it but it's still on my Firefox, IE7 is clear. I even did a system restore to before I downloaded the latest CCleaner but it's still there. How do I get rid of it? Thanks. EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out. There's a little pencil icon you can click and it gives you the option to uninstall from there
  11. I'm still using their version 1.0 since I saw on the PC Tools forum that many were having problems with the new version. I'm not all that savvy with computers so I'm sticking with what works. My only gripe about version 1.0 is that it fails Shields Up's ping test, although so does the Windows Firewall, and sadly I don't know how to make it pass that particular test. Oh, and I'm unable to access the internet using Firefox Portable off a USB drive unless I turn the PC Tools firewall off. Not really a problem since I only use the USB drive at work and I only use Firewall Plus at home.
  12. Google, huh? Never heard of it I actually did Google it and read a bit on the Macrovison website but when I got to the part about "Improve your end user's installation experience" my eyes glazed over and my brain shut down as I am the end user and felt they weren't speaking to me. I didn't remember seeing the icon in my Control Panel before so I was wondering if it was something malicious since it didn't say "Microsoft" (eeeek) anywhere on it. Thanks for the info!!
  13. I was looking under Windows Control Panel and found an icon for "Program Updates" and opened it and I get an update manager for InstallShield giving me update settings for Sonic Update Manager and InstallShield Update Manager. What is it they update? Thanks.
  14. I added the AVGWB.DAT file, but I still get the error message. This morning there was a big update for AVG Free. Not just a definitions update but also a complete software update. I updated it through the Control Center and then found that no matter where I tried to update (Control Center, Test Center, or icon in the system tray) I got the error message and couldn't update. I turned the PC Tools firewall off and the Windows firewall on and tried to update and things worked as they should, of course there was no update available since I had just updated. So I reboooted and then turned off the Windows firewall and turned back on the PC Tools firewall and now I'm back to where I was. Cannot update from the Test Center, but can update from the Control Center and the icon in the system tray. The files listed in the Windows firewall are AVGINET.EXE, AVGAMSVR.EXE, AVGCC.EXE and AVGEMC.EXE. I have all four of those in the PC Tools firewall as well as the AVGWB.DAT file. AVG updating works fine with the Windows firewall on and the PC Tools firewall off. I don't understand why one cause problems and the other doesn't if they're both allowing the same AVG files.
  15. I'll try adding that one when I get home. Originally I just added all the AVG files to Firewall Plus that were used with the Windows firewall that I had been using and figured that would be enough since I had no problems using it. Thanks!
  16. I posted this on the AVG Free forum as well as the PC Tools forum, but thought I'd also post it here to see if y'all have any ideas. I use AVG Free version 7.5 anti-virus software and I've noticed that after I installed the PC Tools Firewall Plus that now when I'm in AVG's Test Center if I click on the "Check For Updates" button I get an AVG error message saying the update server connection failed and it tells me to make sure I'm connected to the internet and to make sure my firewall is allowing AVGINET.EXE. I am connected via my DSL and AVGINET.EXE is included in the Firewall Plus "Application" area and has the green check mark allowing it. I can go into AVG's Control Center and click "Check For Updates" and it works as it should, and I can also right click the AVG icon in the systems tray and then click "check for updates" and it works as it should there as well. Only when I'm in AVG's Test Center do I get the error message. If I turn Firewall Plus off and then I click the update button in the Test Center then and only then will it check for updates. I posted this question to the AVG forum and that person suggested there's another file besides the AVGINET.EXE that I need to let the firewall allow but he was unsure which file it might be. Here is his reply, "You should probably have more than just AVGINET.EXE in the firewall but I'm not sure what that firewall will require... PS... the Test Center update and the Control Center updates are the same procedure so its probably something you have missing... " Since posting the above I added AVGW.EXE, AVGAMSVR.EXE, AVGEMC.EXE, and AVGCC.EXE to the list of applications allowed in the firewall and double checked that they are indeed ticked with the green check mark that they are allowed but the problem persists. Anyone have any ideas regarding this? Thanks!

    VINETLINK.EXE

Thanks! Virus Total didn't find anything malicious so I went ahead and allowed it on my firewall. I think it may have something to do with HP, my make of computer. I noticed when I access HP's extended warranty info it generates several entries in the log on Firewall + saying "app:closed".

    VINETLINK.EXE

I recently installed PC Tools Firewall Plus and it's catching VineTLink.exe and is asking me if I want to allow it or block it. I don't know what this is and can't find any info on it. Is it safe to allow it? Thanks!

    Ie Unbranding

Oh I do use Firefox. But I couldn't sleep at night knowing that there was crap on my new computer that I didn't ask to be there and that I couldn't get off, which is one of the reasons I use CCleaner.

The second step you suggested fixed it. Thanks a lot!!!

    Ie Unbranding

Thanks for the link. I was able to get rid of that button very easily, I should've figured it out myself. To get rid of the IE title bar branding I hit Start then Run then entered "rundll32.exe iedkcs.dll,Clear" and hit Enter. That worked but then I noticed my Outlook Express also had the branding on its title bar as well so I used the http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/ISPUnbrand.zip utility, the same as in the link you provided, and that removed the branding from the OE title bar. But now I've noticed that when I open Outlook Express I get a box popping up that says "Logon - pop.academicplanet.com" and is asking me for my username and password. AcademicPlanet was my old dial-up ISP. I can close that box without entering a username or password and then I get an Outlook Express box popping up telling me some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks. Saying there was a problem loggin onto my mail server 'pop.academicplanet.com'. I don't use OE so it's really not an issue other than I'd like to have all the old AcademicPlanet stuff off of my system. Any ideas regarding these latest issues? Thanks!!!

    Ie Unbranding

I recently switched ISP companies from a dial-up to DSL. I uninstalled all the old dial-up software but my IE title bar still had the old ISP's company logo on it. I found a small utility which got rid of that, however there is still a button with that company's logo on IE's toolbar to click which takes me to the old ISP's webmail site. I'm not sure how to get rid of that button. I'm assuming there's some registry setting I need to edit but I wouldn't even know where to begin to try and find it. Any help would be appreciated. I'm running Windows XP and IE-7. It's very annoying that companies out there stick their logos and corporate names on the software I run on my machine and not give me a way to uninstall them.

    AVG files

Thanks so much. I let CCleaner do it's thing with the AVG files and the one lone Ad-Aware file. Everything runs fine and CCleaner freed up several megs of space.

    AVG files

I hope I'm posting this question in the right place. When I use CCleaner to analyze my system and I have the utilities option checked for analyzing I get a long list of AVG files that CCleaner wants to get rid of but I'm not sure if I should allow them to be cleaned or not. All the files are similar looking to me, but I'm not very proficient at computer nomenclature. All the files have ...\AVGData\upd7bin\u7avi... and after the "u7avi" part the file names differ. For example 823u814ne.bin and 515u514t1.bin as well as an AVG7.log and a history.log, a list of about 16 files in total. There is also an Ad-Aware file "defs.ref.old". Is it OK to go ahead and let CCleaner get rid of all these files? Thanks for any help.
