  1. If you mean that it is always in the System Tray then we have seen this System Tray icon persistence in a couple of cases. It seems to be an issue with the task not always being removed from the Windows Task scheduler as it should be, so for a few people the task starts up again if/when you reboot your machine. (Which in turn seems to depend on just how the update to 5.74 was done, and in what order the new CCleaner settings were changed). Following the 4 steps, in order, from this post will/should clear it up: https://community.ccleaner.com/topic/59567-cleaner-5748198-runs-smart-cleaning-even-though-i-unchecked-smart-cleaning/?tab=comments#comment-325149 If you need help with Task manager or Task Scheduler then give a shout and we can go through it step-by-step.
  2. I'm out of ideas for now, apart from that maybe your Kaspersky AV is the problem after all. Reading back to your first post you said: I do note that Kaspersky Internet Security is now at version 21.2.16.590, patch B. (Released 11 Dec 2020). Both Patch A and patch B for version 21.2.16.590 (and the older Patch C for version 21.1.15.500) say that they 'fix several application issues'. Which version are you running now? https://support.kaspersky.com/15595#21.2.16.590b Sometimes to get the latest version you have to update your AV from the website rather than through the AV itself. (We have had many posts in the past where the user insisted their AV was up to date, but a check on the AV's website found otherwise, and updating to the latest solved their issue. Some AVs are worse for it than others). If you have a paid for CCleaner then if updating Kaspersky doesn't solve the issue I suggest that you contact support, email them at: support@ccleaner.com
  3. Probably best to let Windows sort out WinSXS itself. (That's the main reason why cleaning of 'Old Windows installations' was dropped from CCleaner). Checking mine it also has plenty of Flash related stuff. No doubt the Flash files will dissapear from it by next month, or possibly even on Patch Tuesday.
  4. Just click on the 'Stop' button and defraggler will stop safely. TBH with TB drives a full defrag/consolidation is going to take a long time, and is usually not necessary. Do a files only defrag instead, See these for an explanation of the two diffrent defrag types, and a step-by step of how to do a files only defrag: https://community.ccleaner.com/topic/58715-deffragler-dosnt-complite-the-defragmatation/?tab=comments#comment-321773 https://community.ccleaner.com/topic/59792-need-3rd-option-besides-quick-defrag-and-defrag/?tab=comments#comment-326076
  5. Ah, WinSXS. You can think of WinSXS (Windows side-by-side) as a merging of 'Windows.old' and the Component Store, so it will have old stuff in there from before it was removed to allow rollbacks of updates. It also contains stuff from newly downloaded installs that hasn't been installed yet, links to binaries, etc., etc. More about Win SXS: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/manage-the-component-store Windows itself will clean it up automatically after a while as the files are no longer needed, or as rollback times expire. You can also clean it up manually, as far as possible: Use Disc Cleanups 'Clean up system files' and tick 'Windows Update clean-up'. You can also use 'StartComponentCleanup' and/or dism.exe to clean more. More detailed info about cleaning it manually: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/clean-up-the-winsxs-folder

  7. As well as removing the CP icon it removed the .exe and all the other embedded Flash files when I ran it, but it did leave the empty FlashPlayer folder behind. But it didn't remove them until I did a restart after running the KB; you have done a restart? Where are you seeing remnants? I'm still seeing a few registry entries, particularly potential file associations, from the built in Flash add-on for Edge/Edge Chromium, (presumably there will be some for Google Chrome itself and other Chromium based browsers if you have one installed?). Although those browser add-ons should have been removed by now, or at least permenantly disabled. I'm also seeing a 'FlashDebug' registry entry for Acrobat Reader DC. There are probably more leftovers, I haven't searched the whole registry.
  8. No problem, but doing it that way in the System Tray then Windows will always reset the window size to 'normal' on a restart/reboot. It's a Windows setting that you cannot change. To achieve what you want and always have the CCleaner window open to maximised every time, even after a restart, then you would have to do things a slightly different way. You just have to change where the CCleaner icon that you use is located. You need to 'Pin' CCleaner to the Taskbar, similar to this screenshot, and then always use that Taskbar icon to launch CCleaner with just one click. To do that: In File Explorer navigate to: C:\Program Files\CCleaner Right Click on 'CCleaner64.exe' and in the context menu that comes up click 'Pin to Taskbar'. You can then use the instructions in the article linked above to set it's properties to always open maximised. Once you have done the above then if you have "Minimise to System Tray" ticked in CCleaners Advanced Options you can untick it (it will minimise to the Taskbar icon instead). Note that as in the above screenshot you will also still see a Ccleaner icon in the System Tray if you have Smart Cleaning or Automatic Updates enabled in CCleaner, that's because they run as background tasks, you can just leave that one alone and simply launch CCleaner from the Taskbar icon. Hope that helps, sorry for the earlier confusion.
  9. Can you explain better, perhaps with a screenshot, of just what you are meaning when you say 'the information area'? (That is not a standard Windows term). Do you mean the System Tray? or do you mean something else?
  10. That's a Windows setting. (which is why it goes back to normal again following a restart). See this for how to make any particular app open as maximised, even following a restart: https://www.computerhope.com/tips/tip201.htm I think that by; you mean from the Taskbar, so see the section for "Taskbar shortcut icon:"
  11. v5.64 is the last version of CCleaner that will run on XP and Vista. Which suggest that you may be trying to run CCleaner in compatibility mode for Vista or below. (We've seen a couple of cases of this happening, not sure why it gets changed for some people but it seems to be Windows doing it) Browse to the CCleaner folder and check this for both 'CCleaner64.exe' and 'CCleaner.exe'. Right click on the .exe and in the context menu select 'Properties' and then the 'Compatibility' tab. If it looks something like this then untick that 'Compatibility mode' box and then Apply.
  12. That is normal, it hppens with any and every computer. For an explanation of why it happens see the link in my signature below every post I make. If you can't see my signature (maybe you're on a mobile phone) then: https://community.ccleaner.com/topic/52668-tracking-files/?tab=comments#comment-300043
  13. I assume that's a typo and the Norton version is 22.20.5.39 https://www.nortonsecurityonline.com/faq/art/what-is-the-latest-version-of-norton-security/ Did you try disabling Norton, and then installing CCleaner again with Norton disabled and seeing it it will run with Norton still disabled? https://www.nortonsecurityonline.com/faq/art/how-to-temporarily-disable-norton-security/ Did you try 'Whitelisting' CCleaner in Norton to allow internet access? https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v6958602 If you could give a screenshot of the CCleaner directory on the problem machine we can check if all the files have installed and that the dates and filesizes look right.
  14. No doubt you are also using Health Check, as said above: Health Check uses it's own cleaning rules and takes no notice of Custom Clean's ticks or unticks, or includes/excludes, or 'Cookies to keep'. Health Check is not customisable, if you want/need to customise what is cleaned or not then that is what Custom Clean is for. PS. Storing wanted stuff in the recycle bin seems a strange thing to do, would you store wanted files in your waste bin at home?
  15. Defraggler does a mixture of both consolidate and defrag by default. But you can use it to do either one or the other, see this: https://community.ccleaner.com/topic/58715-deffragler-dosnt-complite-the-defragmatation/?tab=comments#comment-321773
  16. For licensing matters you will need to email support: support@ccleaner.com
  17. What you need in this circumstance is a 'files only defrag' rather than a consoildate. TBH most experienced users use a file only defrag, disc consolidation takes longer and once drives got to 500 Gb and above consolidation just takes too long. (And usually isn't needed anyway as you are less likely to be running out of disc space on a larger drive). I've never had a file defrag take longer than about 30 mins, that's usually after a Windows update/Patch Tuesday, most are much shorter if you do it weekly. To do a files only defrag in Defraggler: Analyze as usual. Once you have the results click on 'View Files'. (or select the 'Files list' tab). Now click on the box at the top of the list to tick all the fragmented files found, then click 'Defrag Checked' That will defragment the fragmented files without attempting to consolidate the disk. PS. If you get an error saying 'Defrag Aborted' don't worry about it, it happens occasionally sometimes more that others. It has defragged what it can, but has left alone anything system protected, or anything that has altered or been reopened, since the analyze. (Usually defender, sysWOW64, SXS, or $Extend files, sometimes your AVs files). You can see that here, the $Extend file(s) has not been defragmented and still has 23 fragments, but the rest are now in one piece.
  18. For advanced users: Just to note that the optional KB4577586 in the Microsoft catalog has 2 pages, with the updates for win 10 versions above 1903 on the second page.
  19. When CCleaner installs but then won't run it's usually because it's being blocked by your antivirus. I'd try the following in this order to see if you can find what the problem is and fix it: Uninstall CCleaner and download/install it again from here: https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds (Use the 'Slim' installer, 3rd one down. It doesn't contain the bundled offers). See if it will run/register now. Check that CCleaner has installed correctly. In File Explorer look in C:\Program Files\CCleaner to make sure that CCleaner has actually been installed. Try double clicking on CCleaner64.exe to see if it will run from there. Make sure that the AV is up to date. It's best to check the AV's website, some will sometimes say they are up to date but there is a later version available on the website. Then try running CCleaner again. Try disabling (or even uninstalling) the AV to see if CCleaner will then run. If it does then it indicates that it is the AV blocking CCleaner and you will need to make CCleaner an exception in the AV. Boot the computer into Safe Mode and see if CCleaner will run in Safe Mode. If it does that indicates that something is blocking it in 'normal' mode. (Usually the AV, but possibly some other security software). For our further info: What version of Windows is the computer running? What antivirus is in use on it? (and at what version). For your further info: Here are the support articles for problems when installing or registering CCleaner (although they don't quite cover your situation): Problems installing CCleaner Porblems registering CCleaner PS. Although not relevant to this install problem, you may have been better buying a 'Professional Plus' bundle which licences up to 3 computers rather than buying 2 individual licences (maybe not as it looks like the second one may have been the Boxing Day offer?): https://support.piriform.com/hc/en-us/articles/360028350711-How-many-computers-can-I-install-CCleaner-Professional-Plus-on-#how-many-computers-can-i-install-ccleaner-professional-plus-on--0-0
  20. Thanks @MartyRossand @VejbymatsI'll pass those on to the staff.
  21. Thank's, unfortunately no clue there then. Would you mind screenshotting the Up-to-date Programs screen from software updater? If the dev's can find a common link in which apps those who are being affected by this have installed that may point to the offending app. You may also want to check the listed apps manually to see if there is an update available for them which CCleaner isn't picking up. (Maybe because CCleaner can't reach their server). For instance Health Check is working fine for me, so either the apps I have don't include the problem one, or they are already up to date: As said above this glitch is not affecting anything other than the Health Check 'Security' tab (which is in fact the Software Updater tool) so it's fine to use otherwise and just ignore it until the cause can be found and fixed.
  22. It is a known about glitch and is being investigated. It does not stop the rest of the Health Check from working. The error is though to be caused by incorrect information coming from one of the applications that CCleaner has found has an update available. If you could click on Tools>Software Updater, wait a second or two, and tell us what (if anything) it finds in "Programs to update" that may help the developers to track down just which application is causing it. Screenshots of both the "Programs to update" and "Up-to-date Programs" screens of Software Updater might be handy.
  23. My disability means that I've never been able to hold a driving licence. I wouldn't risk it anyway, too dangerous for other road users. (But yes of course I have driven, even large trucks when I worked as a designer for an hydraulic tipper manufacturer - off public roads is no problem to others). The original Jaguar MkII (not the 240) was my favourite, and in 1986 I managed to persuade a workmate to lend me his newly restored powder blue one for my sisters wedding. He decked it out with wihte ribbons, dressed up as a chaufeur, and drove it himself. She loved it, much better than the white Rolls Royce that everyone else used for their weddings. Nice talking / remeniscing jagman.(Good craic we call it round here).
  24. I think that the 'handicap friendly' or as we call it 'Accessible' is simply because a lot of Europe is much older that the USA. I myself have a disability, but currently live in a property that was built in 1604 and then remodelled in about 178#-180#? (I've not been able to track that exact date down yet). Well before disability or even old age was considered in building standards, and of course with it being so old you are limited as to changes you can make to it now as it's a private dwelling rather than a 'government' building. Many small shops/businessess face the same restrictions on preserving the heritage look of the original, and even some interior features. Just getting planning permission for the entrance step to be lowered (ie. for wheelchair access to a shop) can be a problem with older buildings. I'm still managing it where I live, but I'm keeping my eyes open for something more accessible in my advancing years. (PS. I'm not in a wheelchair myself but am very active on a UK disability forum).
  25. Glad that you found a solution, thanks for sharing it. I've given the benefit of the doubt here and simply removed your posted link. You could have reported your findings without giving that link, and the information in your post stands just as well without it. Although many of do use use similar utilities the fact that you gave the link after only 5 posts, (all 5 in the same thread), looks suspiciously like a common spamming tactic. I realise that you may just have been wanting to help others but as moderators we have to act when something fits a spamming profile - but not over-react, hence the benefit of the doubt.
