I think the 35 Gutman method is a file shredder. It will render the data unrecoverable {in theory} but will not delete the drive. Is the drive a partition ? A different drive? Please elaborate.

Make sure you have the correct speed {or better}, and it will work . Make sure you match the ram chips {the same}. Anything more than 2x256 is a waste of money because of the processor. Being lazy, when I work on old laptops I use pc133 which has worked on all so far.

I would uninstall the network card. reboot and update the driver. If that doesn't work, a new card is in order.
