  1. Thank you for helping me. "and which refers to a Service Pack 1 for Windows 2000" Oh not familiar with Windows 2000 and not paying attention to the os was I! Just looked up that error. At no point did sfc /scannow advise me that it had not successfully repaired files, which is odd. Would it normally? Well I've not run Disk Cleanup and I'm glad you've warned me what will happen if I do! Perhaps I should run sfc /scannow again and see if any / many errors show this time? When I restarted my computer directly afterwards, half way through booting a 'please wait' appeared - perhaps the dll cache was being updated then, I don't normally see that?
  2. I ran sfc /scannow yesterday. It completed without giving me any notifications other than a number of: "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache." I was prompted to click on 'retry'. It lasted for around 40 minutes then closed. I thought all had gone well until I looked in Event Viewer today. There are approximately 90 Windows File Protection entries there mostly with the following information: The system file ........ could not be copied into the DLL cache. The specific error code is 0x800b0100 [No signature was present in the subject]. This file is necessary to maintain system stability. I think the Help and Support Center that I mentioned above was listed as being a bad file with a bad signature......and could not be restored to its original, valid version. What causes that error? What do I need to do now please? Try again, try in Safe Mode or ? Not confident / knowledgeable enough to carry out anything too complicated. Update Just read this: When you install Service Pack 1, your event viewer may contain many Windows File Protection (WFP) error messages, similar to the following: The system file c:\winnt\system32\xenroll.dll could not be copied into the DLL cache. The specific error code is 0x0000000 \[The operation completed successfully.\] This file is necessary to maintain system stability. The system file c:\winnt\system32\inetsrv\smtpadm.dll could not be copied into the dll cache. The specific error code is 0x00000002 \[The system cannot find the file specified.\] This file is necessary to maintain system stability. The system file c:\winnt\system32\gdi32.dll could not be copied into the DLL cache. The specific error code is 0x800b0100 \[No signature was present in the subject.\] This file is necessary to maintain system stability. This is a problem that was corrected in SP1, but the updated SFC.DLL for the System File Checker (SFC) doesn't function until restart. You may ignore these errors. http://windowsitpro.com/windows/jsi-tip-2705-windows-2000-sp1-install-generates-windows-file-protection-error-messages
  3. Thank you for that interesting information Andavan. I have just bid on and won a brand new genuine (seemingly) XP SP3 installation CD with COA + unused key! Couldn't resist, but should learn how to make a slipstream installation CD with the SP2 one I previously purchased (if possible, it is OEM). I did install SP3 through Microsoft Updates. Microsoft Updates once installed an outdated version of NET Framework (1.1) on my computer! The Help and Support Center also stopped working after I installed SP3, I actually tried to uninstall SP3 but couldn't. In the past I haven't disabled my anti-virus software before an installation.
  4. Of course I would rather System Restore be available, but until there's a serious issue I'm inclined to let sleeping dogs lie.....like you say my computer is working now. I've heard that in Windows XP, running sfc /scannow solely repopulates the dllcache folder so that it has all of the Windows File Protection (WFP) monitored files - I have no idea if it would work, if System Restore has been modified in some way perhaps it would? Worth a try I guess, no harm can be done by running that. About a year and a half ago I did receive remote assistance from a 'Microsoft Answers' computer technician when my computer was blue screening a lot due to a driver. He went to the Dell site, looked up my computer and installed the following: IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers Intel 82801BA Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 244B
  5. No I agree installing SP3 shouldn't have done that, but the problem occurred directly afterwards. Perhaps it was coincidental. I have since read that a particular *anti-virus software can knock out System Restore, don't know whether that is still the case, I would think unlikely to be. Maybe sfc /scannow could correct that? Otherwise all I can think of is a reinstallation of Windows. *which I have used, but can't remember if it was at that time.
  6. That's why I really appreciate all the help and advice I have received here. Okay, thank you, noted everything you've said. I can't do a System Restore, lost it after I installed SP3 - no matter what date I select I get: 'Restoration incomplete. Your computer cannot be restored to....'....which is another reason why I am apprehensive when making certain changes.
  7. Thank you for showing me that. Both Minitools Partition Wizard and Macrium Reflect sound very good. External hard drive I would prefer. I probably could do more myself , but I'm too afraid to take any chances with this computer, it's the only one I have - I would be miserable without it! If something were to go wrong I am not currently in a position to either ask a computer technician to take over or buy a new one. I have around 200 average sized OpenOffice documents, a few Adobe Acrobat ones and a few MP3s to back up - would you kindly tell me if this is the item and size I need (some bad reviews, but most right hand side are good): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Technology-DataTraveler-Generation-16GB/dp/B003MWJKVI/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1399999263&sr=1-1&keywords=memory+stick+16gb
  8. Thank you Alan_B.......mmmm so creating a backup to the main internal drive wouldn't be without risk and would be too complicated for me. Clearly saving to an external drive is by far the best option, I was told it would be best earlier. For now at least, once carried out, I will have my documents backed up onto a memory stick.
  9. Thank you so much, will follow your instructions. Yes I have plenty of space.
  10. I always go to a computer technician when there are major problems. "I think you can use Macrium to save the image right there on your HDD if you don't want purchase an external HDD just yet." I'm not familiar with the term HDD, I'd need to find out. I'd also like to save my documents on a memory stick, not done that before.
  11. Oh really, how nice, I thought I might have been overstepping the mark. It's very good to know that DennisD, thank you. login123 I have a standard factory built Dell computer. I'm not going to reinstall Windows until there's a major problem, if I knew how to I would do so now, but it's not vital for me to, as my computer is running reasonably ok.
  12. Thank you very much for your detailed and helpful responses, oh I've been calling you the wrong username, sorry login123.....and I've only just seen your last post Andavan, had to come back to edit my response. So now I know what I need to do - since posting the original question I've acquired my current os Product Key and an installation CD, neither of which I had before, when I have backed up my system too I'll have peace of mind. What a great team you are here. To everyone who has helped me, I appreciate you taking the time to do so. I'll have to remind myself that this is a CCleaner Forum otherwise I'll be coming here with ALL my computer problems.
  13. Thank you ISO-later and Andavan for your useful advice. "Moreover when you reinstall windows you might have to reinstall the drivers for your hardware." I would be way out of my depth, would love to learn with a computer technician beside me though. The recent BSODs made me realise that it was time to get my act together and prepare for a major incident. I don't have any of my important documents backed up. Regarding Macrium, which sounds great, where is the back up image of my system stored? I was without an anti-virus for a short time, but used McAfee Site Advisor before clicking on any unknown links. I did run scans afterwards: Malwarebytes, HitmanPro, McAfee Stinger and TDSS Killer - all clear. I have an anti-virus now and use Windows Firewall.
  14. Thank you very much ISO-later for that useful information, which I will keep, and for taking the time to help me. This is what I bought, it was one of two, it looks genuine - edge to edge finely detailed holographic disc, the disc / COA is in pristine condition. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OE-M-Microsoft-Windows-XP-Home-Edition-New-Genuine-Unused-includes-COA-key-RAM-/301171746941?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=m6AdQh6hCAsfIsSqRARd8kBymIg%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc I purchased this in case there is ever a serious issue / for when reinstalling Windows is the only available option and also I was hoping to carry the sfc /scannow command. If this were a spare computer I would happily go ahead and attempt a fresh installation now, but I've never carried out one before, I wouldn't know where to start and I would be quite terrified that something would go wrong and I would be left with a black screen! I hate being without a computer. I'm quite keen to find out about installing Windows though, I should learn how to. With regards the C:\i386 folder - I do have that, but if I remember rightly when I last attempted the sfc /scannow command some time ago it wasn't accepted and I still kept being prompted for the XP installation CD.
  15. Thank you very much for your helpful response mta. So if a person had just Windows XP originally on their computer, once they had downloaded SP1, 2 or 3 that would leave them stuck when it came to the sfc /scannow command.......and in need of a new os installation CD. These additional Service Packs cause problems....... I'll try, if no good I'll keep my eye out for an XP SP3 installation CD, even though it is now obsolete! At least one of the problems I previously had should now be solved.
  16. You were all a great help to me here before and I am back hoping that you will answer these few questions for me, as we did discuss these particular issues (see above). You may recall that I have a genuine ("sort of") copy of XP SP3 installed, but previously I didn't have an XP installation CD and I didn't know the Product Key. mta - I managed to get the 25 digit Product Key - both Belarc and Magical Jelly Bean (!) Windows Key Finders gave me exactly the same code. I have also managed to get a brand new genuine XP SP2 installation CD with COA + unused key - haven't seen any SP3 ones and Microsoft no longer distribute XP software. It says for distribution only with a new PC - is that ok? Will a computer technician be able to reinstall XP SP3 using this and an update (although I'm not too bothered about the Service Pack, as it caused me problems before - I realise it's there for security reasons though). I'm wondering if the Service Pack is an optional choice when installing or if it's integrated and if it's integrated can it be updated to SP3? Also, please confirm that this CD will enable me to carry out the sfc /scannow command (which was suggested here when I had the BSOD problem); when I previously tried to I was repeatedly asked for the XP installation CD. This SP2 CD / SP3 computer difference is making me wonder. A modern operating system would be better I know, but I am not able to get a new computer at present.
  17. Yes, I hope that's a long way off, but you know computers. The help I received was much appreciated, I've learnt a few things.
  18. Ok, I see, thank you for that information. Perhaps a search for a recommended one, got nothing to lose, if it's incorrect I'll be in the same position as I was before. At least I know now that it might be incorrect. I reinstalled CCleaner and managed to run it in Safe Mode, so I proceeded to run it in Normal Mode - no problems.
  19. Ok will do later. You have to have the Product Key in order to re-intall XP....mmm. I previously heard that there is another way to get the Product Key via software? Never done an operating system installation. Too advanced for me.
  20. Thank you very much for that useful information. Derek891 - My concern when making any changes to my computer and reason number 10 (!) why I need an XP installation CD is that I can't use System Restore for some reason (used to be able to) - after I installed Service Pack 3 it stopped working. Whenever I have tried since then I get: "Restoration incomplete -- your computer cannot be restored to" no matter what checkpoint date I choose. mta - Think you're spot on there. He didn't charge me for the XP installation CD, he just charged me for the work he carried out. On both occasions CCleaner was coming towards the end of the cleaning process. It was like it knocked something out? On the second occasion I looked closely at the two processes mentioned below in Task Manager as it was running, to see if I could see either being ended - but I didn't see anything before the 2nd BSOD occurred (but then that occurs at the same time the error does I guess). On both occasions it was STOP 0xC000021A error>>>>> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/156669/en Note Follow the instructions in the Knowledge Base article to troubleshoot a process that shuts down with an exception. While you follow these instructions, monitor the following processes to troubleshoot the STOP 0xC000021A error: Winlogon.exe Csrss.exe Note Most STOP 0xC000021A errors occur because Winlogon.exe fails.
  21. Thank you for that information. Unbeknown to me when I knew little about computers, a computer technician put an unlicensed XP copy on my computer. The PC World technician who removed it said he couldn't give me the CD he had used because I hadn't had one to give to him. I only had the original Windows ME installation CD. I don't even know what the Product Key is, the CoA (Certificate of Authority) sticker on it is Windows ME. Like I said before though the current XP operating system was validated by Microsoft and I was passed to get Microsoft Updates. New computer is the answer, purse says otherwise.
  22. Really appreciate your help and advice. "What is your OS?" - My operating system is XP - yes, I know. But I can't change it at present. Installation CDs are expensive and I'm thinking I should really put that money towards a new computer / an upgrade, but I still need to have one for peace of mind sake and so I can run the SFC command. "Have you tried running CC from Safe Mode?" No, I haven't reinstalled it yet. "Does the PC have a 'make boot CD' icon either on the desktop in the Start Menu?" Not that I can see.
  23. Thank you very much for helping me. Security software - currently none, I am looking for a suitable one right now. I have used CCleaner for years with no incidents so it is odd that it should suddenly become a problem. Both BSOD's occurred towards the end of the cleaning process. Dr. Watson information didn't appear despite being set up to (has done before after a BSOD occurred). I have uninstalled it now from my computer.....perhaps I need a fresh installation, that one was updated a number of times. I've tried to run the SFC command several times - always prompted for the installation CD at start, so not been able to carry it through. I've asked around, no-one has an installation disc. Arrrghh! It is a genuine operating system though - validated by Microsoft.
  24. Just had another BSOD when I was running CCleaner again - same STOP error code, as it was cleaning like before, nothing else open.
