  1. Suggestion to add a new column to "Tools->Uninstall" showing bit-version (x64 or x86) of the programs installed. Thanks.
  2. I would like to have CCleaner to run and perform the task as per CCleaner.ini at Windows startup using a batch file. Intend to put following .bat in the Windows Startup folder rem CCleanerStartupBatch.bat rem 05-05-2019 rem Windows 10 x64 @echo off CD D:\Downloads\SystemTools\CCleaner\CCleaner64.exe CCleaner.exe /AUTO exit I am not entirely sure though as I am not familiar with batch files. The batchfile is in the CCleaner folder and I created a link to the batch file in: folder C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup Q: Will this work? Thanks. Later: I gave it try and it worked out fine. Could not delete this thread.
  3. FWIW.. one last remark: I used How To Use the Format Command to Write Zeros to a Hard Drive found on Lifewire, viz. format x: /fs:NTFS /p:2 from the admin cmd prompt, where 'x:' is the driveletter. The time it took was roughly the same as that of Wipe Free Space within CCleaner. This time CCleaner couldn't find anything. See screenshot. Again, just FWIW (obviously this only works for an empty drive/partition)
  4. I did some other tests as well: 1) Wipe Free Space on a VM - then Recuva, same results 2) (again) Formatted Q-partition (5GB test partition) Wipe Free Space on this formatted Q-partition Recuva - same results. Wiping, by the way, takes just a minute... whereas I am used to taking quite a long time. So it -looks- as if something is not done(?) Anyway, in the past all were 'ZZ' but right now everything is 'revealed'. Am curious how things show up with you or others. Or should I use Wipe Entire Drive?
  5. I use Tools->Drive Wiper, then select the drive (in this case partition) and at 'Wipe' Free Space Only is selected. Probably I am doing something wrong or some setting is wrong, I don't know. I am very sorry for the big screenshots! I tried to upload using an url from imgur, but nothing happened (spinning wheel) Other type of URL, did not work, so I have no alternative but to upload it this way. Don't see a way to upload it as thumbnail only, expanding to full size when clicked on. As said, probably it may not work when used on a partition only.
  6. Probably they are not recoverable. However, the matter is that Wipe Free Space used to change the MFT records to all 'Z' entries. That was great. Right now, even though files may not recoverable, the full names and paths may reveal what they were about, i.e. what the contents might have been. See example. Ignore the filenames - they do not actually exist, but are for testing purposes only. I really wouldn't know why it does not work this time. As said, I repeatedly tried. Hmm.. whilst writing, I just come think of it: it is a partition, not an entire drive, that's the reason maybe...?
  7. AFAIK when running Wipe Free Space on a partition or HDD, Recuva will show files and folders all 'Z's, like in the attachment. That was the case in the past. I have run Wiper 3x now, even formatted the partition and again wiped it using CCleaner, but filenames are displayed with status 'Excellent' whilst using Recuva Deep Scan. How come? Thanks. CCleaner v5.40.6411 x64
  8. Thanks! I agree, there a lot of other things to worry about... That said, often there is no need to wipe the entire HDD (or SSD), but wiping some files or folders, including their MFT entries, that would be convenient sometimes. Specifically this (file erase and wiping its MFT record), often is not listed in the 'feature-list' of file wipers/shredders. I believe Eraser can take care of that and BCWipe (Jetico). The BCWipe tool wipes so-called 'Directory slacks' and "NTFS transaction log file" as well, and MFT records. Anyway, thanks again.
  9. Thanks! It worked. Chrome is my default browser, so, when it didn't work in Chrome, I tried Firefox, but was facing the same issue. Therefore assumed it wasn't a browser thing, but maybe a wrong link or something. I cleared the cache in Chrome and it worked. Thanks a lot!
  10. How to obtain ccsetup542.zip ? I seem to be circling around, back and forth on the Piriform website, but am not getting on the 'builds'-page. Even when doing a Google search for ccsetup542.zip and clicking on the displayed URL ( https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds ) it will get me on: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/download/portable and from there immediately to https://www.ccleaner.com/ I prefer to use the portable version. Thanks. (also tried another browser, so I guess it is not a browser-issue)
  11. Up front: I know this subject is discussed over and over, here and elsewhere on Internet. Also I know that TRIM should do the job, so it is not necessary and will wear out the SSD. That said... when it comes to privacy and whilst running recovery tools like Recuva (deep scan): TRIM will not touch the folder paths of deleted files, meaning that even though a file and/or folder is deleted and even with TRIM being active and even if the file is not recoverable anymore, Recuva will still show details i.e. the nature of the file(s)/folder(s)... A wipe free space solves this. Modern SSD, especially the more expensive ones, are quite durable and have a lifespan of many years. They often run idle most of the times. Probably running an occasional wipe free space (say a few times a year) won't really wear out the drive too much. Often users will buy a new PC every, let's say, 4,5 years or so.
  12. Thanks. Okay, bad luck then. Just for your info and really absolutely no offence meant(!) I think there are tools that 'cover' MFT entries. The idea is that when running a recovery tool, the file itself may not be recoverable, but then again the folder or file-name may reveal what the contents is about. Anyway, thanks again. =
  13. Add and option to rename the file and folder path after a secure delete. so: after a secure delete and running recuva deep scan: currently: filename: ScreenshotSoAndSo.png folder: Q:\Photoshop Screenshots\ after secure delete with options set Filename:ZZZZZZZZZZZ.ZZZ folderpath: Q:\ZZZ\ZZZ\ZZZ... i.e. the same way as CCleaner Drive Wiper - wipe free space However, that is taking a lllllong time, as it handles the entire drive, whereas above option may only take care of 1 or a few files. BTW: wonder why this option (secure delete) isn't available in CCleaner? (well, not that I know of, I might be overlooking it...) =
  14. I would like to have all Office .lnk files on C:\ removed by CCleaner (AFAIK they are not removed from the 'pinned' list within Office 2016) Have added: Options->Include: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\*.lnk Also intended to add: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office\Recent However, CCleaner warned me that this was impossible: "For system safety reasons you cannot select this specific location" Q: Is this correct? = =
  15. I confess... I am 100% sure that I am doing something wrong, but ... after doing a search here and within the search results panel, how am I to open the specific topic? right now, when I click on the topic/thread, the forum page is opened, listing all topics/threads, instead of being transferred to the specific thread. thanks =
  16. Tried: search duplicates - on size only - on date only - on contents only these files do have a different hash (forget about the reason why the hashes are different: long, complex and boring story) so I do nót want to compare files on their hashes, but on either one of the above instead. CCleaner does not show any results. = =
  17. Thank you again! Need to check whether there are any tools around that are -only- wiping the MFT tables, i.e. not the entire drive. Meanwhile: when running Recuva and going thru the wizard, select drive, deep scan , etc. a drive may not show any entries at all when from the result panel I select [scan] again with the first 4 items tagged (Options->Actions) whilst leaving 'Scan for non-deleted files' untagged, entries are displayed. Curious to know why the results are different. Any suggestions? =
  18. Thank you so much! This is quite new to me, really. So... 'they' say - never run wipe free space on a SSD. Wiping MFT records would not be so harmful then? - btw - although 'Follow this topic' is tagged, i never get notifications -
  19. Up front, I know, it is written and suggested all over Internet: wiping free space on a SSD is not recommended. Although it is not entirely clear whether the reason is mainly the wear of the SSD or 'wear' and other technical reasons. If it is the wear only, one might argue that today's quality SSD don't wear out so quickly, so I guess when it comes to wear only, running 'Wipe Free Space', say, just once a month might not be so harmful..?? (I don't know really) Anyway I learned not to use wipe free space, but TRIM should be used. Okay. However, when running Recuva deep scan on the SSD, it will display deleted files and folders that one does not want to be displayed. (TRIM=Activated) Q: How to avoid that then? On normal HDD's, after running wipe free space, the deleted files/folders are displayed by a bunch of Z's which is really perfect. =
  20. Oh, btw, can one safely use Eraser to wipe files on SSD's or wipe the recycle.bin?
  21. Thing is that whilst using Recuva - deleted files can : either be recovered or if not (trim, carbage collection) one can see the filenames and knows what they are about - even though they may not be recovered. Running Wipe Free Space would theoretically result in filenames like ZZZZZZZZ etc. at least this is the case with HDDs. Admittedly, I haven't run Wipe Free Space on my SSDs sofar.
  22. Likely a 'newbie' question. Just out of curiosity... with CCleaner->Options->Cookies open I used an other tool to clean cookies and see what what would happen, i.e. if all cookies were gone. The other tool showed no cookies anymore, however, CCleaner still showed some 40-50 entries. After checking further I discovered they mostly, if not all, referred to .xml files in Internet Explorer (v11) \Domstore folder (In Domstore the same entry maybe listed twice or more but in different subfolders) Q: I believed cookies were .txt files only? Is it correct to list .xml files as cookies as well? Maybe it is, I don't know. Thanks.
  23. am not sure whether CCleaner developers are following the forum. right now I use another tool to context menu erase files, wish it was part of ccleaner. am writing this merely to 'bump up' this thread...
  24. I think Piriform should add the hashcodes on their site. After installing my AV-software gets a warning 'The program has been changed' File: ccsetup500.exe 4,92 MB (5.165.056 bytes) C:\Program Files\CCleaner\CCleaner64.exe Hashes of the application executable file (CCleaner64.exe): MD5: 18EE6C694976C4D205AF24D6CCE3B660 SHA-1: 8A209FE458BA34365673F9F37DFB40A464ED90AF Verified information according to the digital certificate of the executable file (CCleaner64.exe): Company: Piriform Ltd Certificate authority: VeriSign Class 3 Code Signing 2010 CA Valid from: 2013-06-25 01:00:00 **** On following is listed. Having this warning popup in front of me, but do not know what to do. If Piriform would have added the hash-codes I could have been sure. --
  25. Maybe add a warning when the index.dat is selected for deletion that this will cause pin files and folders to be erased as well. As what joschi4 said, often this list has been built up in a conscious and timeconsuming way (office has no such thing as a settings backup). Restoring the index.dat is impossible - recuva indicating as unrecoverable, so we have to start from scratch A warning would definitely help!
