  1. Same here. Many have not been as fortunate though.
  2. Maybe Malware? Did you run some scans?
  3. For you people having memory issues with Opera. There is a setting in the options for Opera where you can set the maximum amount of memory for Opera to use. My Opera never goes over 60 MB of RAM. The setting is located in Tools->Preferences->Advanced->History-Memory Cache. There is a drop down box with options for how much memory you want Opera to use. The default setting is "Automatic" and Opera will use a lot of RAM with this setting. You can set it as low as 10MB if you want. I set it at 60MB and have no problems at all.
  4. Yes the auto update now works and it updated perfectly on one of my machines. I will use it for a few days and see how it goes before I update the rest of them.
  5. I am more interested in real life results since I live in the real world. I know many people using AVG and not getting Malware. Some do but what do you expect when you open e amils from people you don't know or visit known crap ware sites. You will get infected no matter what Anti virus you use if you behave like that. I personally have never had a virus on any machine no matter what antivirus I was usuing. I can't even remember the last time my realtime protection has had to alert me that it blocked something. I probably could run without an antivirus and still be clean. As far as spyware/adware, I have six different programs for that and none of them are running realtime protection. I use them as on demand scanners. I scan once a week and never have anyhting except the occasssional tracking cookie. I have Spybot, AdAware, Superantispyware, AVG Antispyware, A-squared, Windows Defender, and using AVG antivirus.

Yeah Firefox without extensions is pretty stripped down browser. IE7 is even better feature wise than a stock Firefox. Opera is totally loaded right out of the box. I love Opera. It has "Fit to Window Width" that I have not seen on any other browser. Firefox doesn't even have an extension for that.
  7. That decrapifier I have heard about but did not think I should have to "decrapifie" a brand new machine. Besides you decrapifie the thing and the day comes you need to use System Recovery that comes on Dell machines. Guess what happens when the System Recovery is done restoring your PC to the state it was when you first took it out of the box? You get all the crap freshly installed staring you in the face when you start up the machine. Fun time! You get to decrapifie all over again. Weee!! Total BS. Ask me how I know. Been there, done that. Never again.

Hmm, interesting comment. I have tried almost every browser there is. Firefox is one of the best, IE is a POS.
  9. When I had Norton Internet Security 2005 running on a Dell Laptop there was something like 11 processes running in Task Manager from Norton and over 50 MB of ram being used. I actually paid for that crap When the automatic update kicked in there were a whole whack of processes that were named Call Back or something like that that would practically freeze my system until they were done. I swear there were like 7 or 8 of these things firing up regularly for updates. Ridiculous.
  10. It's 40 Mb now. Thats after 1 update. A few more of those and we will see how you like that.
  11. When I went to Firefox 2 I uninstalled 1.5. Than went to C:/Programs/Mozilla Firefox C:/Documents and Settings/User name/Application Data/Mozilla C:/Documents and settings/User Name/Local Settings/Application Data/Mozilla and deleted what was left. Than rebooted and installed Firefox 2. No problems on 3 machines. Actually runs better than 1.5 did.
  12. I resisted updating to 2 for a while because of the problems I was reading about at the Firefox forum but most of the new skins I was liking were for FX2 so I took the plunge on one system and it worked perfectly fine. Also I had installed Cooliris on 1.5 and noticed a huge memory leak with it. After a couple hours of browsing FX 1.5 was using over 300 MB of ram. I disabled Cooliris and ram usage went back to normal which for me is around 50-90 MB of ram for Firefox. I posted on the forum about it and nobody else seemed to have the problem with that extension. When I updated to Firefox2 that extension worked perfectly. So now I have Firefox2 installed on 3 machines with no issues.
  13. Yes my smallest is also 80 GB. Thats not the point though for me. Big bloated programs that are lacking in features annoy me. Especially when there are programs that are 100 x better and a fraction of the size. Also IE7 might be 40+ MB now but it won't stay that way for long. MS will update your A$$ off and before long this thing will be a gig or more Maybe not a gig but it will get huge.
  14. On the computer I am using to type this I have 3 processes running for AVG. I shut off the e mail scanner since I use web mail accounts. Here are the numbers: avgamsvr.exe (real time protection or resident shield) 724 KB avgcc.exe (control center) 1000 KB avgupsvc.exe (updates) 1020 KB I have AVG installed on both my systems and the computers of 2 other family members for a total of 4 systems. Never had a single problem with it and it's free to boot. Norton on the other hand gets my vote for worst piece of software in the universe. Getting rid of this 1000 lbs hog is sometimes as bad as getting rid of a virus. Had to reinstall windows to undo the damage removing Norton Internet Security did on one of my systems. This was done with the help of Norton tech support over the phone and using their removal tools. There will never be a Norton product on my systems ever again. Norton to me are just like drug pushers. Give the product away fro free for a trial period and make it difficult to get rid of when you want to. Lets face it. Buy a new system today and you will almost certainly have Norton or the equally useless Mcafee come preinstalled. If you don't know any better you just say to your self it's working fine and you purchase a subscription when the trial runs out. If you do know better you try to remove it with out totally trashing your system. It's a joke. My way around this? I ordered a Dell and insisted that none of that preinstalled crap be installed. I let them know this was non negotiable. They screamed and squawked about how great Norton/Mcafee was and that if I did not like it I could "simply remove it no problem". I asked why they include this garbage and try to resist when I ask not to include it? They openly admitted Dell is payed by Norton and Mcaffe to put this on the computers. This is Norton and Macafee's way of advertising. I told them I don't care and not to put the junk on my system. After demanding to talk to a person higher up the food chain I got what I wanted. Not only did it not come with the Norton but I got a lot of other junk left off as well. If the computer had of come with that junk on it I would have sent it back so fast your head would spin. I would have also held them to their agreement which I had an e mail confirmation of.
  15. I have it installed on 3 machines. Not a single issue with it. Not one crash or hanging or anything. 11 extensions installed: Google Tool Bar for Fire Fox beta Tab Catalog Cooliris All In One Side Bar Tab Mix Plus Fission Tiny Menu Text Size Tool Bar Auto Hide Image Zoom Rewind/Fast Forward Also have 9 skins.
  16. Than you are seeing what I am seeing too. That comes to a total of 40+MB and they are just getting started believe me.
  17. Yes, the jokes on me . I just don't get how such a basic browser can be such a pig when there is browsers like Opera that have 100 x more features and are much smaller. Even Fire Fox is smaller with all my extensions and skins although it isn't nearly as compact as Opera. Maxthon is also very small but it's not really a full browser. It's basically a big add on to IE.
  18. So you are telling me that you installed the update from Tuesday and it is not in your IE7 updates folder?
  19. Sorry but that is an even bigger POS. I keep IE installed simply because I use and like Maxthon and it needs IE to run.
  20. Have you checked your IE7 Updates folder since the MS updates came out last Tuesday? I have one computer that I updated and it ballooned that folder to 20MB. I have not updated the other one yet and the IE7 Update folder is around 1.2MB. Are you installing IE7 updates? I don't see how your IE7 folder could be empty. My two versions of Opera are just over 12 MB each. This is with 11 skins installed that total 6MB. I am not using the email client and I dump the cache when Opera is closed.
  21. I took a look around my C:/Windows folder. There are two folders in there for IE7. One is simply called IE7 the other is IE7 Updates. As most probably know the last MS updates included a big one for IE7. Before the update my IE7 Updates folder was 1.2 MB. It is now 20 MB that is on top of the 20+ MB IE7 folder. So in the just over 3 months I have had IE7 it has ballooned into a 40+ MB piece of $hit. You know it's not going to stop there. I can see regular huge IE7 updates coming, because this is Micro Stupid we are talking about, and this thing is going to get totally out of hand. I could put almost 5 Operas in for the size of this IE7. Each install of Opera being 100 times better than IE7. What a joke. IE7 is the least configurable of all my browsers by far and the biggest. Anybody else paying attention to these folders I am talking about?

I downloaded and tryed this about a week ago and I really like it. Yeah I know it's just a shell and needs IE to run which means you are exposed to the same risks as you would be with IE. I have never had a problem with IE security wise so besides that Maxthon 2 is cool browser. Of all the browses I use it is the most configurable. I use Firefox 2, Opera 8.54 and 9.02, Maxthon 1 and now Maxthon 2, IE7. Have also used Avant, Flock, Slim Browser, Crazy Browser and K Mellon. I can say without doubt Maxthon 2 is the most configurable. Everything in the UI can be moved to where you want. You can unlock the tool bars (like IE) and drag them where you want. You can right click and move any button, menu item, address bar, search bar, status bar to where you want(like Firefox and Opera). Most of the Maxthon 1 extensions/plugins work with Maxthon 2. Maxthon 2 has the nicest skins to of all the browsers I have used. There is something like only 50 available as of now but they are really nice. Here is a link to the skins http://res.maxthon.com/ItemList.aspx?t=38 I especially like the Mac type skins. I would recommend checking this browser out. It's in beta so it's not perfect but it's very stable for me. http://beta.maxthon.com/

    Opera Tweaks

There are hundreds of Custom Buttons you can add to Opera. I personally have 21 that I have added. Here are some links to the sites. All you have to do is click on the button and than confirm when it asks and it will be added to your "My Buttons" area of the customize diolog. You can also simply drag the button right from the site to the tool bar if you want. http://operawiki.info/CustomButtons http://homepage.hispeed.ch/ttt-opera/butto...rowser-adv.html http://www.aimwell.org/Help/Buttons/buttons.html You can also make your on buttons with this tool. You have to visit these links with Opera for it to work. It's all done on line. http://nontroppo.org/tools/buttonmaker/
