When I try to access my sendto folder and "my documents," Vista tells me access is denied even though I am logged in as administrator. What could be the problem?

Aren't the ie7 and ie7updates folders backup files? I see the old IE6 in there. The update files seem like they can be deleted if there are no problems with IE7.

You can try recuva first. There's also two excellent backup programs that will recover reformatted data 99% of the time: 1)File Scavenger 2)Handy Recovery snapfiles.com has some really good shareware and freeware data recovery programs. However, most of the good ones are crippled shareware. For example File Scavenger limits files to 64 KB each and Handy Recovery allows you to recover one file per day in shareware version.

Kaspersky Internet Security is better than Zone Alarm Suite as of now. However, the Kaspersky firewall seems to slow the internet connection down way more than ZA. Both are good, but Kaspersky has a much smaller footprint.

It picked up Win32.Trojan.Spy.DeskAd.2 in the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\NTREGOPT_is1 Is this a mistake by Zone alarm or a real trojan? NTREGOPT is just a registry defrag program. This got past NOD32 so I think it might be a false alarm, but I am not sure.

It really isn't worth buying spyware software for a price. The free versions are good enough for most users. If you want to buy something, buy a good security suite. Zone Alarm Internet Security, Kaspersky Internet security are very good examples. I'd wait for Norton until the new version comes out. Zone Alarm is beginning to get too bloated and the Norton beta has corrected much of their bloated programming. Besides that, Spybot, Spywareblaster, windows defender, and lavasoft free versions are good enough, with common sense internet practices. I use NOD32 in conjuction with Spybot and spywareblaster with zonealarm. No, Firefox has bugs just like any other browser. I use firefox and opera, but the drive-by downloads that plagued IE 5.5 were fixed in 6.0, and 7.0 looks good. With common sense practice, a user can enjoy IE 7.0 with no problems. I just like the fact that firefox isn't bloated, and Opera is even less bloated and arguably better in terms of "tight" code, very few security bugs.

When I update my NOD32 antivirus it automatically connects to a choice of several servers. I discovered that TCPView logged a connection to a server at lunarpages.com, is this a problem?

That anti-Gmail site looks like it could have been funded by Yahoo, Microsoft, and other competitors who can't meet google's level of service. Lot of it centers around "the sky is falling" mentality. They seem to forget that all services scan email. If someone is paranoid, they should use hushmail. "After 180 days in the U.S., email messages lose their status as a protected communication under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act," is this true? The datamining could be a twist of the fact that they scan all emails, but I am not sure. How long does Gmail keep a residual copy of a deleted file?

Gmail does datamining of private emails? I've read this on another forum. This doesn't make any sense. I know they keep backups of emails and eventually delete them (which is good - I don't want a lost email due to a failure). I also know they scan emails for ads and it is automated. Don't all the email services give emails unique IDs? I remember the controversy over Gmail that was a joke. It's arguably the best email service in the industry that doesn't require a direct payment. I've been beginning to use Gmail for online ordering because the line from Gmail to my computer is encrypted. I cannot say that for any other free email service or Comcast - what I use, besides Hushmail. I'm powerless in the line from say, Amazon to google...but it's still better than other options.
