  1. Perhaps it's Firefox or something. I had to sign in through Members List. Anyone else experience this?
  2. Perhaps! I posted this on Wilders. http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=311462
  3. The problem is I can't keep my hand off things. Curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back. I just have to try it! I have done all the preware "speed" patches and the overclock. Funny part is, I strictly purchased it for my wife and after seven weeks or so she still hasn't touched.
  4. Thanks to rridgely, during the fire sale, my family was able to purchase all the 32GB HP TouchPads we needed. They use the webOS. In a week or less you'll be able to port Android making them dual boot. One of my first questions on the PreCentral forum after my purchase was about security issues and I was informed that no one was "writing" malware (supposedly) for that system. I'm not sure what the rest of the family is going to do but I'll at least try Android. So what security apps are available for it? Thank you! I guess google is my friend but I would still appreciate any input! http://socialtimes.com/the-big-four-anti-malware-apps-for-android-only-one-runs-on-tablets_b68238
  5. Not in the least! I was quite confident there were no issues with my ole trusty desktop, just an issue with my hearing. lol I actually have hearing aids I received from the Veterans Administration but only wear them when I'm archery hunting. Hate when those bucks sneak in on me!
  6. So I guess I'm not as crazy as I thought I was. I included a floppy drive with this tower six or seven years ago as some of my children had floppy data. Apparently that is what I was hearing and now things are back to normal. Than you Mr.T and Mr.G!
  7. I agree that I'm probably just hearing the read arm, but like I said, I never noticed it before. It indeed occurs when it is emptying the RB because I disabled that feature, ran CC and it was quite as a church mouse. I'm not concerned, there are other applications that create the same noise, although I'd say far less than 10% of ones I might regularly use.
  8. When cleaning as it cleans the Recycle Bin the the HD makes the noticeable (the standard "click") sound on an XP Pent 4 desktop. I swear this is something new. Not saying it's a bug, just sayin!
  9. rridgely you are the man! I like to drive by here at least weekly and happened to notice your post around noon Eastern DST. I went to the link a few times and I swear, the "red" text after Staples, stating the managers would match the drop price wasn't originally there, although I don't really know that for sure. I called our local Staples which is 25 miles from here and as expected they didn't have a clue about the whole situation. However, unexpected they called back in 15 minutes to inform me they'd hold a 32gb (all they had but what I preferred) until 5:00 PM. I informed the rest of the family before I left and they all were interested, although my daughter and her husband have found they are all sold out in Boston. My son's store was also sold out but he called me as I was pulling into the lot and I purchased the last two. Now the hard part, what do you all know about the webOS? I purchased this as basically an "enhanced" e-reader for my wife as I have no interest in one. What security apps will work with it, what freeware will function, etc? Thank you!
  10. Comodo CTM user here. Have never had a problem on XP desktop, had one problem on Vista laptop. Visit their forum first and read the horror stories then make your decision. Reasonably sure it works on 7 also but don't know about 64 bit. Or pay $ and get Rollback RX, from whom Comodo allegedly stole the technology. The other side of the story is they purchased it from AyRecovery (another clone, the fourth being EAZ-FIX). It no doubt is basically the same software, perhaps an older version of, that Comodo tried improving. I absolutely love it! A snapshot takes one or two seconds and restores are merely reboots. Again though, do this at your own risk! The risk is minimal if you have a backup app that can restore mbr as that is what gets screwed up because CTM loads first. I screwed up the laptop early on because I tried to uninstall CTM with windows as opposed to its own uninstaller. My monthly sequence is uninstall CTM, defrag (only use CTM's while CTM is installed), image with Paragon and then reinstall. Because Paragon can repair/restore the mbr I saved the laptop. That was about 18 months ago. Never a problem since on either PC!
  11. All versions of Firefox have probably functioned in the following manner and I just never paid attention, but different sites definitely render under different parameters. That is to say the back space key doesn't work on every site only the Ff back arrow. I'm going to pay attention but I'm thinking the differences may be whether the site is rendering with http or https. as Alan_B implied.
  12. Since it only occurs logging into hotmail, which I rarely do, I'll just ignore it. I recently restored a MozBackup to check on a rendering issue and things weren't exactly right so I'm not messing with my profile but thank you for the suggestion. I am using Ff v5 by the way!
  13. My daughter is working for two months in Namibia and the least expensive internet access she could find was 3g. I would guess it is less dangerous than WiFi but is she still prone to sniffing? There are a few details that she had to check on her checking account back in the States and may have to again. What are the risks? Thank you!
  14. Thank you hazelnut! I actually do use that shortcut all of the time but never tried it. Unfortunately no joy. I would surmise that it has something to do with msn's security, if not for the fact that even just a bing search exhibits the same behavior! edit! It doesn't occur with bing searches if not logged on.
  15. I like the way msn has the news (and other interests) laid out so it's our home page. Although I rarely use hotmail, it is my wifes email client and I see the following all the time and it drives me nuts (but not her). Hotmail and bing searches (which I do use as often as google) open in a non-full screen window with the back arrow disabled. It's not tabbed but the original window (www.msn) is still available in the system tray. I'm sure it's not a Ff issue as it is the only site that exhibits this behavior. Other links on the page open normally, i.e. in a new full screen window (not tab) with the back arrow available. I've tried closing it in full window mode but the next time it does the same thing. I can't find any settings on the site but there must be a setting that can be changed. Can anyone help me change this behavior? Thank you!
  16. Can anyone explain this one? I was doing some timing to MSN.com (Timed with a stopwatch until Gmail Checker has finished checking two accounts.) in preparation for testing browsing session startup times with a HIPS application installed vs not installed. To my amazement on an old Pent 4 desktop with XP SP3, a "cold" session, i.e. after running CCleaner with all the following Ff cleaning functions enabled: Cache, History, Cookies, Download History, Session and Compact Databases, starts on average about 2.5 seconds faster (13/15.5) than starting a new session without cleaning. To further clarify, a "non-cold" session starts opening MSN (and Gmail Checker) after merely ending the session and restarting. Delete Invocation is enable in Sandboxie, not sure how that enters in to all of this unless the cache is deleted anyway (I guess I need to disable that and then see what happens). Still would not explain how CCleaner speeds things up other than compacting the data base but after only opening one page, one time, I can't understand that either!
  17. Yeh, I don't know. The mail stated it would be available in a few months but they offered the beta now. That is where they claimed the unlimited storage.
  18. A lot of free storage out their right now. As near as I can recall MS SkyDrive is still leading the pack at 25gigs. But, I just checked my Yahoo mail account (which I only use occasionally) and I'd received a mail from them 4/28 touting their new mail, so please forgive if this has already been posted. Anyway, they claim "Unlimited Storage"!
  19. That is, the driver update. Around six months ago I set up a Linksys E2000 router for my daughter who resides in Boston (I live in PA). Every PC ( mine, husbands, siblings, etc.) that ever entered the house connected to the www flawlessly except her HP G60 laptop. It could/would connect to the network but the network would not allow a connection to the www, listing her connection as having only "Limited Access." There are dozens and dozens of threads around with the issue, not necessarily with just HPs. At that time I tried numerous "fixes" posted without success, including updating the Network Adapter's driver. When MS would search online (from the adapter's properties) it would always state the driver was up to date (2008). This weekend on the HP support forum there was a thread about the adapter not being compatible with the E2000 and a link for a 2010 driver which finally solved the problem. However, before downloading and installing it I again tried to update from the device manager and again it stated the driver was up to date. So beware!
  20. I just tried the experiment with Ff4, Adblock Plus, Privatefirewall, Norton Antvirus, Zemana and last but not least Sandboxie and it worked fine. I even downloaded it but did not install. It's a great free Anti-Virus, having used it for over a year on two PCs.
  21. Another reason to use Sandboxie (or similar). If you are using web mail I'm sure Sb is already at work. If you use a POP3 client like Outlook, OE or Thunderbird, be sure to enable Sb to always run them sandboxed!
  22. On my desktop PC I have a bookmark folder that contains all of the banking type urls I ever access. Although there are no passwords associated with the urls I still preferred the folder not be available on my laptop since, although not a great possibility, it would be a lot easier to steal the the LT than the DT. So I searched how to disable Sink: about:config>services.sinc.auto.connect>toggle to false. In my situation this really worked out great, because I deleted the said bookmark folder on the laptop but still have all the rest of the desktop bookmarks. I've essentially did the same on both PCs for and rebooted them so the service isn't even running. Of course if you haven't even opened a Sinc account this is all a moot point.
  23. I did post this on the developers site too. Any help in getting it back appreciated. I don't see anything in the Checkers options or Ff options.
  24. I believe most Americans like myself, find the British accent charming and pleasing, especially I would think when listening to the opposite gender. What reaction do you have listening to us? In a hundred million years I can't imagine it would be pleasing unless it is just the novelty of it.
