  1. have you tried doing the same test using FireFox as your browser? i use FF in private browsing mode and have been happy with the results?
  2. not a great deal of info to go on. what sort of disk?, is it a solid state?, is it a partition? first guess would be something as simple as a background running task or something as sexy as wear levelling.

Hazelnut, thanks for the CNET link, and I had actually forgotten about the Win7 system image software. probably because i hate the MS Backup program in general and gave up on it, i think, back in the 3.1 or 95/98 days. thanks to DennisD, I have been playing with the free Macrium program and must say, so far so good. as you say, it's an additional safety net. again , my apologies for the off topic detour.

thanks for the heads-up Dennis, I hadn't heard of Macrium, but as i said, that'll be due to my lack of interest in images over backups. but i'm curioous enough now (and it's been long enough) to give it another whirl. plus last week i bit the bullet and installed a SSD as the System Drive, hence my sudden, refreshed interest in imaging. as an off topic item (sorry), why do you not like CNET. I tend to use Filehippo and MajorGeeks mostly but that's only mainly due to a particular link taking me to those mirror sites. is there some underlying reason to avoid CNET?

DennisD, I'm curious as to what software you use for imaging your system partition?. I used to use Nortons Ghost ages ago but found the process took far too long, something like 8 hours to image, then 8'ish if you had to restore. So I gave up and have for many years now just backed up my personal data with ViceVersa. I rebuld my PC every 18 months to 2 years to get it back to original speeds and find the entire process of reloading all my software and resetting up personal settings takes about 3 hours. So personally I've never found a benefit with partitions, I just use folders. I'd be interested to hear of your timings to if you can.
  6. I second that. Since discovering this thread, i've disabled Java in Firefox to confirm some suggestions, and so far have seen no negative impact. Still have Java installed on the PC though.

don't get me wrong, I understand why you all like partitions, they have their benefits. but i've seen people do it on the sole reason that if partition 1 dies, they think they can still access partition 2 for example. they fail to realise (or forget or were never told) it's the same physical unit. it's more than likely that whatever has rendered one partitiion inaccessible will probably effect the entire drive.
  8. don't look at the time remaining, it'll drive you nuts. either look at the location of the green 'files being written' block to get a feel for it or minimise DF and do something else - like walk away. not a helpful answer i know, but as stated above, all progress bars should be taken with a grain salt. sadly for you, Boskosauce, this should just have been a one-off and hopefully was the result of some out of the blue cirsumstance particular to your setup. What happened the next time you ran DF?
  9. Gerry, Have you tried running Defraggler with your PC in Safe Mode?. A lot of programs don't get started (your AV for example) and those files that would normally be locked should be defragable (is that even a word?)
  10. I'd like to add support for this feature. I have folders with files that change very little if at all, like movies and ISO images. Moving these sort of folders out of the way(regardless of their individual file sizes) would be a great feature.
  11. also consider buying a new drive and be done with it. with mechanical drives being so cheap and even SSD's recently dropping in price, if you are considering trying to recover a bad sector, why risk using an unreliable drive when you can have a lot more trust in a new one. i don't see the sense in trusting your data to a drive that has already let you down once. sure, the above suggestions should find, recover or at least lock out the bad sector, and if you're happy to then continue using the drive, great. but make sure you do regular backups, even if it is until you get some faith back from using the drive.
  12. or maybe a feature where log files are 'emptied' instead of deleted, controlled by an option or preset to do that to certain log files, like MSE ones. but wiping a file instead of deleting it would have a higher resource overhead.
  13. Great, got them, thanks for that.
  14. any chance the first post in this thread can be updated to include all the environment variables CCleaner recognises?
  15. are %commonappdata% and %pictures% something special that winapp2.ini can handle or are they new system variable I'm not familar with?
  16. being new to the forum and interested in this threads suggestion of disabling Java and the reasons, pro & con, of doing so, I'm just wondering what Python has to do with it, or are we just off topic slightly.
  17. I know how a big winapp2.ini file effects the speed of loading CCleaner, do you know if that's still the same once those entries are addedd to the program? And once added, does winapp2.ini (the person) then remove the entries from winapp2.ini (the file)? (As someone called him earlier in this thread, maybe we need a naming convention, something like winapp2.ini(hero) and winapp2.ini(file) to reflect the difference)
  18. Even though I've used CCleaner for about 3 years, I've only very recently discovered its winapp2.ini capability (yeah yeah I know - never bother reading the doco) and I've just got along with the ccleaner.ini usage. So am I right in saying that Piriform themselves don't issue an 'official' winapp2 file, but that this forum are the 'keepers' of the file and update/amend it based of member suggestions/feedback.
  19. if by this you mean hyperlinks in your email aren't working, this is usually due to Internet Explorer not being set as the default web browser. it would be effecting all email hyperlinks, not sure if it effects links within programs, never tried that one before !.
  20. it's like a batch file on steriods !!!. i used to do some DOS stuff decades ago and occasionally still dabble when I want to knock up a bat file to do some work for me but some of the commands in that file are way above my skill set.

and my Mozilla example was just that, an example. but, yes, if Mozilla came out and had a changelog that stated in a bit more detail what the changes were, that also would be helpful in some cases. If Piriform thinks it's important enough to list in a changelog, lets show some specifics, it doesn't have to be a War and Peace epic, just some more detail would be nice. well, I think it would anyway. call me crazy !!!
  22. isn't that the very idea i was suggesting. wouldn't a 'pared' down winapp2.ini have the same benefit of only having the entries in it that concerned that particular PC CC is being used on. much like my idea if CC could 'pre-scan' the installation PC and either include what it deemed fit or asked the question "hey i found these things, tick the ones you want included" I did hear you the first time in your post #2, i just don't agree that they are "two completely different things". Different In behaviour: yes, different in setup: yes, but different in outcome: no. At the end of a CC cleanup, LOGS, TMPS, cache, cookies, what have you, are deleted. If that's from an INCLUDE in ccleaner.ini or a FILEKEY in winapp2.ini, it's matters not, at least in my reason for using CCleaner. I use CC for it's 'global' approach, that is, for file ABC, if anywhere on my PC, remove it. Whereas I believe winapp2.ini is more 'surgical' - in folder ABC, just remove LOG files. Winapp2.ini (the person, not the file), thanks for the batch file, I've saved it and gave it a quich glance, got some meaty commands to go through. but it basically looks like what I was talking about.

Good luck with that request Keatah, I think you are pushing your luck trying to get any software house to 1) admit to a bug and 2) tell you what it was. I'm just happy for it to be fixed. But something like "added support for FireFox 16", it may be nice to also say, as a sub-heading, "Mozilla has changed the folder location of cookies", as a simple example. that way we can adjust things on our PC's. Like, taking my simple example further, if I had FF15 cookies included in a backup, I'd know I'd need to change things if I upgrade to FF16. Just a thought...
  24. I don't disagee with your comments or concerns Andavari, I just think we would all be alarmed at the potential security flaws in lots of the software we have our trust in. Lets face it, we happily use the stuff blissfully unware until it bites us on the bum
