  1. I have an ATI Radeon HD 4200 with my new PC. Low to mid-range. Does the job. I don't do high-end gaming. (I can't stand the sight of blood. I mean I've seen blood before, just not "to go".)

I agree about the "blood stuff" and am not at all interested in those kind of games. 20 plus years in the military gave me all I wanted or more! I do like some games that are not so complicated. Had a Need For Speed and enjoyed that. Won't run on this machine for some reason. Will try the new card I ordered and see.

Everyone that replied to my post, thanks very much.

  2. If you don't mind switching over to ati instead of nvidia, this would be a pretty good card for you:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102843

If you want to stick to NVIDIA this is the standard card for non gamers:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814261085

If you want to step up to something a bit faster but still relatively cheap, then grab one of these:

    ATI

    NVIDIA

I'm an ATI Fan(they run cooler and like andavari said, they have better drivers). I would go with the 5570. (third link)

To be honest I don't have the knowledge to determine what is better than the other. I assume two guys that have the posts and reputations you and Andavari have the best ideas. So I did go with the 5570, just ordered it.

Sure glad I found this Forum. Haven't got a bad recommendation yet. Thanks in advance,

  3. I found the gateway page for the motherboard in your pc:

    http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Intel2/4006160R/4006160Rsp2.shtml

Your pc has a PCI Express x16 slot so just about any cheap card will work. Here is the cheapest NVIDIA one I could find:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150498

After reading some of the reviews, I've decided that this is not the card for me. I don't mind paying for a medium sort of card, so price is not a final factor. This PC has been a good one and although it's 4-5 years old I'll keep is running for a while.

Will you suggest a couple more from New Egg that are somewhat better. The fact that this one doesn't have a cooling fan turns me away.

If you have time, would consider it a great favor if you could help me with this. I know nothing about hardware.

    Regards,

  4. The separate Video Card GeForce 7650GS gave up on me after running hot so long, I think was the problem. I noticed one day it was running a Temp of 197 F. Shortly after that, nothing. I unpluged the DVI cable and am not getting the one that is on most machines like mine, again I think! It shows a INTEL ®83945G Express Family on Speccy.

First thing I did was search for the 7650GS and I was surprised at the result. See Attachment.

I'm sure there is another card that will work but I don't know how to look for something that is right. Would appreciate some guidance here.

The above may not be necessary but included for you information.

Another Post long ago I complained about not be able to use Windows Media Player and found out it was because of the bad Video Card. The VGA is sure downgrading from the DVI I had.

I have now found something that might help you to help me. See the other attachment.

  5. At 2 months away from 85 I'm not sure if I am in the 'use by' or 'sell by' date frame !

Glad to have you here. I think I was the Senior until you came in. I'm nearing 77 and lost my seniority. Thank you!!! :D Good people here and they know all you will ever need to know about Computers. Just ask them and see.

  6. I have absolutely zero Google software entries in my registry since I don't use any of their software, what I mean is when looking here there's none:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software

Not to mention I have a .reg file that automatically gets merged by my junk cleaning batch file to remove the Google Chrome offer allot of software places in the registry - don't use it don't need it.

Well cleaning batch files sounds like what I'm looking to do, like a bunch of junk by Google. Is this, cleaning batch files, something an old Brain can do? I'm not very technical but can still follow direction fairly well.

I spent almost an hour yesterday deleting them one by one, using Reg "Find Next" way. That gets old quick and the movement of the bar showed little progress.

    Thanks for the information.

  7. She meant well on what she did.

I didn't realize that some Google entries were necessary, Believe I will install Google Toolbar and Google Updates again as recommended and then delete.

Don't know how she did it all, with the program missing from REVO and IODeleter as well as Control Panel and yet it was still in the Registry.

Thank all of you for the reply. This Forum is tops for me. Never have asked a question that I didn't' get answered.

    Redhawk, Alan_B and Aethec, thanks.

  8. While I was away for awhile my wife did me a favor, sure she did. While updating CC Cleaner she allowed Google and many of Google children into system. Realizing what she did, ran the uninstall from Control Panel, rather than the REVO program. She told me about it and I searched the Registry for GOOGLE and there seemed to be hundreds of entries. I know how to delete them one by one. Is there a way I can talk to the Registry to delete all Google entries?

This one at a time stuff is tiring.

  9. I signed up for this forum for this one purpose. I have used CC Cleaner for several years, through at least 3 computers (this one is 4 years old). I am also no newbie to updates that contain "extras". After Yahoo Toolbar had been downloaded a couple of times, I learned to watch for these "extras" & deny their additions. I also learned how to remove them. Recently, I updated CC Cleaner. Now I might have missed the page where you allow this "extra" or it was contained in the "fine print" that no one reads, but afterwards, I had Google Chrome. Now if I wanted it, I would have downloaded it. In fact, I had it at one time. But after hearing the CEO of Google supporting internet censorship (in his own words as seen by myself in an interview) I erased EVERYTHING Google from my computer. Not only did I get Google Chrome but they screwed up my emails. The hyperlinks do not work now (I had to copy and paste to register). It is my guess that they reconfigured my email hyperlinks to work only with Google Chrome. I have spent several hours trying to fix the problem but still cannot. If someone there could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Use Google Chrome when you wish, but I think I remember someone saying that IE had to be set as your default browser before the link in mail would work. Try and see if it helps.

  10. I'm going to pretend I'm a fire-engine (since we're pretending non-existant things) ROFL B)

And I'm going to pretend that I'm an Old Man and believing that all this over and over, and more than over stuff is real.

I deleted every thing that looked like JAVA based on what Andavari said many posts ago. Nothing bad has happened, have yet to have a failure with anything.

You guys are confusing me! :(

  11. Wow, I would've never expected that much.:o

I was concerned as when I saw the total. Almost backed out. I use the iobituninstaller and it give you a total of the entries uninstalled, unlike Revo uninstaller. I saw the iobit mentioned on the forum once, think it was here, so tried it. For example I used Revo once to clean after a reformat and thought all was well. Once I got iobit I notice that Napster was still on my system, or an entry was still there. That convinced me to us iobit.

Thanks for all the information you have furnished about this.

    Regards,

  12. They could both be removed Mudd. Although it may not be necessary I'd recommend restarting your computer after removing them.

    Edit:

If you use anything like OpenOffice.org it will complain about Java not being installed.

Thank you Sir. I will do exactly that. I don't use Open Office.org. I'm sure as I don't know what it is!!

  13. Butting in to ask about Java. Taking suggestion to uninstall JAVA, I find two entries: JAVA 6 update 24 and JAVA TM SE Runtime Environment 6. Should they both go? The two of them consist of 190MB. So, if not useful I'd like to do away with them. Am I safe in doing so?

  14. Glad it's sorted now Mudd.

You have now been designated our WMP expert!!

Ma'am, I know nothing! Just happened to hit upon another guy's problem. Thank you for all your help and the time you spent with me. Sure appreciate it.

    Sincerely,

  15. I had apparently deleted those files from mediafire before you tried to get them. Mediafire sends a bunch of junk with your downloads. Sorry...apparently I was editing while you tried to download.

No problem with that. I have found the critter in the hen house, I think. I'm going to try to post a text from from notpad to explain better than I can.

To you and all the good people out there that has tried to help me with this, a Big Thank You. Sure some of them must have a little Texas in them!!

My Graphic Card burned couple weeks ago, and the machine reverted to the Generic Graphics. That answers all my questions. After you read the attached, (if it gets attached), you will see what I'm talking about.

Again, thank to you and all the others. For sure the attachment was not originated from me. Got it from a Forum.

  16. I like your style, Mudd. :D

There are 4 avi files here. They will all play with windows media player 10 on this computer except #3. It has to have VLC player. Download them if you like and see if your player will play them.

If your player will play these except for #3, but it won't play yours, then your avi files may have gotten messed up.

    1.win.avi = #1

    2-clock.avi = #2

    3-nogowmp.avi = #3

    4-Cheers.avi = #4

If you haven't fixed it soon, try VLC portable as suggested by Andavari and see if it will play yours or these.

    Keep after it...

I've downloaded the VLC and it works. But, for my files I'm using Irfan Viewer. It's easy to get a full screen for these tired old eyes. For your four AVI's, none will run for me. See attachment for reason, and bet that's the reason for all the problems.

I'm considered Hard-Headed by some people that know me. I'm not giving up on this. Even if I have to spend most of an afternoon or morning doing a reformat I'm going to fix this rascal!!

  17. Hi Mudd.

Have you checked to see if "Windows Audio" is still running and is set to "Automatic" in "Services". Media Player won't play anything without it, although other audio players will work fine.

Start\Run\Type "services.msc" in the box (no quotes)\Hit OK. Scroll down to "Windows Audio" and make sure it's running.

It seems obvious, but it hasn't been mentioned yet unless I've missed it, which is well nigh possible.

It indicates "Started" and "Automatic." This was the first suggestion about the Services. Thanks, that eliminates a possible problem. I'm not going to quit. May not live long enough to find the problem but am going to look.

  18. Will try that now. Will reply with the result.

Associated AVI with QuickTime, Windows Media Center, and back to Media Player for each one. No change. As I mentioned to earlier, clicking an AVI file gives nothing. Right click and can open in Irfan Viewer which is fine. Just rather have it work like it is supposed to.

    Thank you.

  19. Forgot about it being different in Vista Mudd, my apologies

    does this help?

    http://www.techrepublic.com/article/how-do-i-change-file-extension-associations-in-windows-vista/6172036

Went to the URL and checked as directed. My association for WMP is correct for AVI files. So something must be wrong with the WMP itself rather than the associations. And you said that WMP cannot be uninstalled.

Maybe I'll try Microsoft. Hope they still offer support on Vista. They are such a hassle to work with but usually they work problems out.

Earlier I mentioned that I had did a Factory Reinstall from a Partition on this PC. Prior to that WMP worked. Maybe during the reinstall something slipped. I'm not going to do that again. It take to much time for the Windows Updates. 111 to start with, then Service Pack 1 bring about 50 or so more. Service Pack 2 does the same. Only take about 15 minutes to restore but much time for the rest. I do have a good broadband download of 7-9 GB, still it's to much trouble just for one program.

Thank you and all the others for the helpful hints and suggestions. Sure a great bunch on this Forum.

    Appreciate y'all!

  20. Okay Mudd, I cannot see any file that you have attached. Also did you see the file types in WMP as I showed?

What version of WMP do you have? 10, 11?

    Don't panic :)

Yes Ma'am, I saw the window and it does not appear as mine does. I'm trying again to send a copy of it. Version is 11.0.5002.18311.
