  1. I just noticed that I have 2 folders leftover in Firefox's History after running CCleaner. I can't even delete them manually. I'm using FF 3.5.2 and the latest CCleaner. Also I don't know why but I can't get CCleaner to clear Start menu programs. If it matters I've just recently upgraded to Win XP Pro SP3. Thanks

    Reformatting HD

Disregard ^ completely. I don't know what I did when I originally configured my internet cause the thing was showing no activity, but it was working. So I'm over at windows update and I see one for NVidia network something or other and so I decide to install it. It didn't work. I shut down and later when I reboot my internet isn't working. It shows connected and no activity. I guess the "update" screwed something up. I had no idea what to do. I tried a bunch of things and unfortunately/fortunately, since there wasn't much on my pc I reformatted again. This time when I installed my NVidia drivers and went to configure my internet it came back "normal" and the speed reads what it was before. Weird...I don't know.

    Reformatting HD

Well, I did it...all went well. Did have a minor issue with the internet setup but took care of it after a few minutes of head scratching. Funny enough for some reason, my internet connection is faster! I mean when I mouse over "connection status" it's now 400mbps and before it was 100mbps! WTH? Ok, I can't say it is indeed faster...feels about the same, but what's with that change? I'll take it though. haha ---------------- After posting this I opened up "connection status" and there's no "activity" no details of packets sent or received, but my internet is working fine. What's up with that??

Thanks guys. I guess there's really only one way to find out. I'll probably format sometime this week.

    Reformatting HD

It's been such a loooong time since I've reformatted any pc that I've kind of forgotten what to expect. haha My basic question is about my cable internet service. When they came to hook it up I don't remember the guy using an "install" cd. In fact, I don't remember him messing with any settings really. He just hooked up the modem took down the serial or whatever and used that on some screen that popped up and it sort of took care of the rest. When I go to Internet Protocol TCP/IP Properties all the selections are "obtain "IP/DNS/Private IP" address automatically....soooo, I'm taking this to mean that if I reformat if should be pretty straight forward. My question therefore is, if I reformat, and I understand there are a number of variables, but getting my cable modem to work again...you think that will be a hassle? I've gone and downloaded current builds to a lot of the software I use and put it on my 2nd hd so I'm hoping to make this as painless as possible. Thanks. Oh, SP3 is it recommended?
  6. my brother bought from there a while back. no probs. i've used the site to look up what memory is suggested for a specific computer/mobo or whatever. incidentally, i ended up taking the memory my brother bought before he got rid of that pc. haha i recently added some memory to my current pc, but i risked it and bought used from ebay.
  7. Ah, okay you know I always thought "User Assist History" was for something else! Setting the number of programs to 0, that's also something I hadn't considered. Thanks guys.
  8. Is it possible to have CCleaner clear the start menu "recently opened programs list"? Cause for the longest time I've been right clicking into Properties, going to Customize, and then hitting Clear List. I tried searching if this is possible with cceaner and came up with too many unrelated hits, but I imagine it should be.
  9. I've been using SFS for a while, along side AVG Free, isn't it weird that all of a sudden I get that threat warning? Whatever it did after I healed it I think rendered it useless cause that "Class not Registered" will not go away even after reinstalling it and ignoring the AVG's warning. I guess I'll have to sign up and report this. I just liked using SFS cause I could just drag whatever I wanted to shred into it, but I suppose I can now go ahead and set up a shred folder for CCleaner to handle. Thanks
  10. I use a file shredder called Simple File Shredder, I don't think it's supported anymore, but it's around, anyway, last night I left my pc on to dl some stuff. This afternoon I went to update AVG Free and a short while later I went to use Simple File Shredder and AVG pops up saying "Threat Detected! while opening file: c:\windows\system32\secdel.dll Trojan horse Delf.DBE" so I healed it. So now I when I try to use SFS, I get a "Class Not Registered" pop up. I tried uninstalling and reinstalled it. I went to AVG's vault and restored the file (at least I believe i did) and still AVG will pop up with the threat and even if I say to ignore the threat, I cannot use SFS. I get that Class Not Registered error. This is a first. Not sure what to do.

    mozilla browsers?

That's it! Thank you sir! Anyone have any recent experience with K-Meleon? Is it a worthy alternative to Firefox? Is it buggy? Thanks again.
  12. A few weeks back I was on somewhere online (haha, you'd think i was intoxicated cause i really can't recall where) and saw mention of a browser described as an alternative to Firefox. It wasn't Opera, Camino, IE, or Safari. It did very much have the look of a stripped down Firefox. I even visited their site and thought I had it bookmarked to download later on, but I guess I didn't. Anyone know the browser I might be referring to?
  13. Err...that's not good. I'd hate to have to use system restore. I mean I can live without changing these icons. haha Humpty, I tried those steps you listed and nothing. The option is still missing. OHHH, wait you guys I JUST got the option back! I thought I had done this step before! When in "folder options/file types/" and looking at the details for the extension, in this case one of them was WAV, where it's supposed to say "advanced," it said "restore." Now I swear I clicked "restore" before and nothing happened. I think there must've been several apps competing for the WAV file which I sorted out in the apps themselves. I just went back and tried hitting "Restore" again and the "Advanced" option came back! I'm happy.
  14. The icon size is not the problem it's the option to change them to something else that's disappeared and other icons revert to some generic icon if I change them. If by refreshing the icon cache you mean following the steps you mention, I'll try that. I didn't even realize that option was there. Talldog, I'll have to read up on that little app. Thanks.
  15. For a while now in my start menu, or should I say programs menu, the icons for the help files and for urls are the most generic of all generic windows icons and recently my icons for .wmv, .wav, .mp3 files changed after reinstalling some media players and stuff. The PROBLEM is when I go to "folder options / file types" and try and change these icons, there is NO option for me to do so! Somehow this option has disappeared for certain file types. I thought it was pretty straight forward, but now I don't know what the deal is. I can change the icon to a shortcut and that's about it. As for the help file and programs url icons, I had changed those previously but it seems they reverted to that damn generic icons right after. Any thoughts on this matter? How do I get that option to "change icon" to appear again? Thanks
  16. I use FF 2.0.0.5. I recently filled out the "local weather" box at cnn.com, which is currently my home page, and for some reason when i run CCleaner, that particular cookie does not clear out. I'm not saving any cookies, don't have a cnn.com account if there is such a thing. I just simply entered the area code and now the site knows it. Anyone know what's going on there? Ok, never mind I think I found the problem. I just checked the privacy tab on FF and saw cnn cookies there. I thought CCleaner was supposed to clear all that stuff out?
  17. Fantastic! Fellas THANK YOU!!!
  18. Problem is it doesn't let me drag anything. Are you using the default theme?
  19. Hey, how did you get the menu bar to into one row with the bar below it? I installed it but it did not combine like that screenshot.
  20. You know you're absolutely right. I think I'm so used to secondary apps and junk, that I overlook what's there. Couple that with losing so many links last time I attempted to work with it and I was pretty pissed and wanted something different. The extension does make some things easier, and there definitely are improvements (behavoir and gui) I'd prefer on the bookmark manager, but yeah it works pretty well. I was definitely underestimating it because I have so many bookmarks. I did find other extensions, openbook and bookmark duplicate detector, which help me organize a little more fluently from the moment I hit ctrl-d.
  21. Never mind. I got an extension called Flat Bookmark Editing https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/117 For some reason didn't think it suited me before it was in it that I'd lost a bunch of urls trying to move them around. But I started messing with it and found how to move "batches" of bookmarks properly. It's not drag and drop as I wish but it works. Also, I can search out all urls from a certain site like what I tried explaining in my previous message. Oh, and it also makes for quick keyword assigning, which is an great thing...
  22. I'm looking for something to help me arrange bookmarks by site/url. For example I want to take all my Youtube links and put them in a youtube bookmarks folder. Searching them is not all that difficult because the bookmark description usually has the name "youtube - blahlalblabl", so they're easy to search out. The problem I've had is I've lost links when attempting to move large quantities of them. What I'm looking for needs to be able to search by url, for example to find all bookmarks for a certain site where the name or url isn't clear like Youtube but more like www.youtube.com/fkdjfkdfjk and another ckjeckec.youtube.com/12121.html. They're from the same site but the bookmark syntax isn't the same so searching out that type of bookmark is more difficult and I still haven't found a good way to find, highlight and move them all to one folder. Any suggestions? Oh I'm using FF 2. Thanks.
  23. Ok, what you're controlling is CPU fan speed?
  24. I have a gigabyte mobo and it comes with a utility called Easytune that allows me to monitor cpu temp, I just don't see how i'd be able to regulate fan speed. Btw, what temp would be a red flag temp? my cpu temp runs about 94f.
  25. Talking about fan noise is difficult. It's subjective and dependent on where in the house you have your pc and what you do with it. I'm into audio myself. If I unhook my side fan and leave the top running, the noise level is probably what i'd prefer. I'm just afraid to do that for fear of overheating so I've never tried it extendedly. I just can't imagine what 4 fans sound like!
