  1. It's normal. Startup is the most crucial moment for processor. If your processor is going to burn it most likely happens at the startup, so you guys should be thankful that your computer is trying to protect your processor. :P

  2. NTFS definitely. Actually NTFS is pretty much the only choice for 250 GB partition. AFAIK You can't format such a huge partitions with any other windows file system. Not with windows tools anyway.

    Edit:

+ There is the famous 4 GB file size limit on FAT32 ;)

  3. F-Secure listed the top 10 malware registry launchpoints.

Most trojans, worms, backdoors, and such make sure they will be run after a reboot by introducing autorun keys and values into Windows registry. Some of these registry locations are better documented than others and some are more commonly used than others. One of the first steps to take when doing forensic analysis is to check the most obvious places in the registry for modifications...

    Media Player Classic

"Media Player Classic looks just like Windows Media Player 6.4, but has many additional features. It has a built in DVD player with real-time zoom, support for AVI subtitles, QuickTime and RealVideo support (requires QuickTime and/or Real Player); built-in MPEG2/SVCD/DVD codec."

    nirsoft.net

"NirSoft web site provides a unique collection of small and useful freeware utilities." (Tons of good stuff for any Power User)

Note: Various antivirus programs detects some of the NirSoft password recovery tools as trojans, because of their nature.

  5. This problem may occur after you install security update 925902 (MS07-017) and security update 928843 (MS07-008). The Hhctrl.ocx file that is included in security update 928843 and the User32.dll file that is included in security update 925902 have conflicting base addresses. This problem occurs if the program loads the Hhctrl.ocx file before it loads the User32.dll file.

A patch for this is most likely also included in todays Windows updates. :)

  6. It's a good recommendation, however the Downloaded Installations folder can contain things for instance that belong to Microsoft Windows Live Safety Scanner, etc., so it isn't exactly a repository for Windows Installer packages which are in: C:\Windows\Installer

Yes you are right. My bad.

  7. Those issues appear on limited user because the user doesn't have the access to those files / folders, what causes CCleaner to assume that those files doesn't exist at all and that makes it an issue. For example the $NtUninstallKB?????$ folders can only be accessed by admins.

CCleaner probably could handle this a little better if it would respond to the "no access error" differently.

  8. Damn. In Finland we can get passport for 10 years with one simple application what has to be delivered personally. The passport will be delivered in a week and it costs 46€. If you are wiling to pay more you can get the passport in a day... Legally :)

  9. Hi, I've tried this, and it's great....

Just one question, is it possible to have the "portable.exe" file in a difference folder to "CCleaner.exe"? I'm using the app launcher from portableapps.com, and at the moment I have CCleaner on my list twice. :(

Idealy, I want the "portable.exe" file to be in G:\PortableApps\CCleanerPortable,

and "CCleaner.exe" and all the other gubbins to be in G:\PortableApps\CCleanerPortable\App

    Thanks!

    Thank you! :)

Add in your portable.ini in [PORTABLE] section value CCleanerPath=App and then just move all the files except portable.exe and portable.ini in the "App" subdir.

  10. Great. :) That makes sense! CCleaner adopts it's environment from the service, but probably still runs under your own user account (CCleaner process shows as blue in Process Explorer). That's why it saves the Shell Folders in your HKCU and not in the NetworkService profile HKCU.

  11. Thanks. The NetworkService profile apparently is a "special" secure profile for some of the Windows XP services. For some reason in your system CCleaner get wrong environment paths what points to that profile.

Could you try Process Explorer to check some things. In Process Explorer select properties from the CCleaner process and look in the environment tab and check if any of those paths there poit to the NetworkService profile (especially USERPROFILE path).

  12. By default the "only temp files older than 48 hours" setting should be on, but with clean install CCleaner ignores it until you view the Advanced settings.

    To reproduce the problem...

    1. Do clean install. Or better just temporarily rename the CCleaner options key in the registry.

    2. Make sure your temp folder haves fresh files. :)

    3. Run CCleaner and do Analyze. (Temp files newer than 48 hours are listed)

    4. Go to Advanced settings. ("Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours" option is on by default?)

    5. Do Analyze again. (Now only temp files older than 48 hours are listed)

  13. I really want to get this problem solved before next Portable CCleaner release. :o I made a special portable.exe build what will always run in debug mode and it haves extra logging capabilities. So esponjacinzenta please try this build.

Just unzip the exe file in the same directory with all the other Portable CCleaner files and run it. It will create two log files (install.log and portable.log) in the same directory with the exe file. Attach the log files to your reply here or send them to my email *yoink* Thank you. ^_^

    *yoink* Too late. <_<

  14. That would only explain the Couldn't write... errors, but not the Unregistring errors.

My guess is insufficient user rights. In XP home edition you have to be logged on as administrator to get it work properly... Though normally it shouldn't even start if you are not logged on as administrator.

Do you always get just these errors

Couldn't write "(App)Start Menu Ordering" setting in INI file!

Couldn't write "(App)OpenOffice 2.0" setting in INI file!

Or do you get a whole bunch of other write errors too? If so add in the portable.ini in [PORTABLE] section value ReadOnlyMode=1

Also could you run Portable CCleaner in debug mode (run the exe with /PDEBUG parameter or change the debug mode on with the portable.ini file) and post the log (you can copy the log text by right-clicking it) in this topic.
