  1. I definitely do not have the prefetch option under ANY subgroup in the CCleaner settings panel. The program above appears to be for XP only, and since I have 2000, I've decided to give THIS program a try. Is it normal for an OS to completely disable prefetching the way mine apparently has?
  2. Just out of curiosity, how does Piriform arrive at the version numbers? Are they random, or do they represent something in particular? I'm looking forward to the next version!
  3. After reading this thread, I noticed that I no longer have the prefetch option either. (FYI I'm running Win2k SP4)
  4. JetAudio is a great program that convert many times of file formats, listed HERE. EDIT: I just read that more carefully and noticed you're looking for video conversion, so never mind lol.

    Nice list

MPlayer is owned by MPC? I've used both and MPlayer is a different program, so thats a surprise. I use the MPUI front-end for MPlayer. Yes, QCD doesn't have the best play list support, but not everyone has the need to organize 10,000 songs. They're next version will include a full media library however. If I needed an iTunes alternative, I would definitely use Songbird. I agree that the AIM 6.0 version of Ad-Hack is bloated, thats why I use the "classic" 5.9 version. No ads/spyware and very lightweight!

    Nice list

I think that is a pretty poor list of freeware. There are many quality programs missing, such as: GMail Notifier under Internet KCeasy under P2P AIM Ad-Hack under Chat Jetico Personal Firewall under Security Hover IP under Network Core FTP LE under Servers Quintessential Player under Audio MPlayer under Video and many others. Anyone using that list to find good programs to use will sadly miss out on some excellent products.

Have you tried the new GUI? http://www.emro.nl/freeware/jkdefraggui.rar It lets you select all the various modes without having to use the command line switches.

One of those threads brought up a good point. NOT defragging can make the drive search in multiple places for the various fragments of a file. Where as a fully defragmented drive has to search less. I guess there's two sides to this issue.

Alright, cool. As long as the drive is not being worn out prematurely by doing this, thats all I care about.

Well obviously the head would have to move from the beginning of the drive to the end to defragment the entire drive, but I just didn't realize that was so hard on it.

How does running a defragger every day wear out the drive? I run JkDefrag every night before I turn the PC off and it only takes about 4 mins. Is this really hurting the drive?

JkDefrag is not commercial, but its MUCH faster than the included Windows defragger. As mentioned above, it also does more than just defrag the drive too.
  13. I just switched to Jetico Personal Firewall after using Sygate for a long time. I am very impressed! Its extremely low on system resource usage and offers my features than any firewall I've used (which has been about all of them).
  14. You're right, you MUST assign each application a rule or else it will keep popping up! That's one of the reasons I guess its not a n00b app. Other firewalls just ask you to allow the program and as long as you check the "remember my response" box, you'll never see the pop-up again. I'm disappointed to hear that v2 will not be free. Where did you see that? I also fixed my sig. Apparently the site I linked the image to didn't like it much.
  15. Of all the firewalls and other security software I see discussed on this forum, I've hardly ever seen this terrific one talked about. After using Zone Alarm Free and Sygate for significant periods of time, and trying Kerio and Agnitum, I recently started using THIS little tool. It has more features and functionality than any firewall I've used, yet it uses less memory and system resources (currently 7.6 MB according to Task Manager)! It is not quite as simple as Zone Alarm, for example, and I would only recommend it to those who are familiar with software firewalls, yet once you're used to it, its quite easy to use. Also, version 2 should be released in the next few months. Just wanted to suggest this to those looking for a good, light firewall!
  16. Yeah I agree. By far the best program for monitoring and editing startup entries. Its surprising that Sysinternals released this version so quickly after the previous version.......8.60 was released just last week.

    Jkdefrag

It is much better than Diskeeper. Not only is JkDefrag only a fraction of the size (its only ONE file), it also defragments the drive as well as any program out there. Furthermore, it goes a step beyond that by optimizing the drive so that it runs faster (moving data to different places on the drive). For more info on that optimization, go here: JkDefrag

    Jkdefrag

I second that notion! JkDefrag is the best free defragmentor/optimizer you can find. The new optional GUI makes it easy to use various command line options. I use both JkDefrag and Contig on a daily basis.

  20. Is there any harm in turning off or unplugging a device without stopping it using that icon? I often turn off my digital camera without stopping it first and get an error message saying damage can be done by doing that. Is there really any potential for harm?
  21. It may not be called the "iPhone" for long. Cisco Systems already owns the copyright to the iPhone name, and is now suing Apple for using it. I think it shows just how arrogant Apple has become that it would blatantly use another company's registered name.
  22. Here is another excellent freeware utility: FastStone Screen Capture EDIT: I'm not sure that program has video capture capablities
  23. The only update I got today on 2000 was for IE6 SP1 and the usual Software Removal Tool update... Are there more to come?
  24. I've been using Sygate Personal Firewall for a long time, but after reading about Kerio in this thread I am tempted to try it. I am skeptical though about the software returning to "free" mode after 30 days...I can imagine it asking for registration or something at that point. Still, I think its worth trying out so thanks for the info!
  25. Since CCleaner cleans files out of the recycle bin, what I've been doing is dropping files I want securely deleted there, enabling one of the secure delete methods in CCleaner, and then running it. It seems like that is a decent method of securely wiping files. Does that sound like a decent method or is it not advisable?
