  1. Offline folders OFTEN get currupted or take up way to much disk space. Disk space is becoming less of a problem as most new computers come standard with 500gb of storage. However, offline files quickly overtakes a 20gb drive! Yes, we can adjust the amount of space offline files use, however this diskspace never seems to be taken back, even after files on the server have long been deleted! The following error is OFTEN logged in the application events log Error 52 Event Type: Warning Event Source: EventSystem Event Category: (52) Event ID: 4356 Date: 1/25/2012 Time: 10:23:35 AM User: N/A Computer: PC171 Description: The COM+ Event System failed to create an instance of the subscriber partition:{41E90F3E-56C1-4633-81C3-6E8BAC8BDD70}!new:{6295DF2D-35EE-11D1-8707-00C04FD93327}. CoGetObject returned HRESULT 8000401A. I have found the only way to get rid of it is to delete the offline files cache. To do this you must open any folder, then from the menu choose Tools, Folder Options, click on the Offline Files tab, then hold both the ctrl and shift key while pressing the delete button!!! This will clear the cache and you MUST reboot right after you complete this or it won't cleanup properly. Yes, you can turn offline files off then back on but you don't get the same results. Note: If you are a home user offline files can be turned off altogether. Offline files feature is only used when your computer is on a network and your files are stored on a file server. The offline files feature keeps a hidden emergency copy of all your files locally on your c drive. If for some reason your companies file server is down your computer will automatically pull from the offline files area. Once the file server comes back online your computer will automatically update the files to the area you normally store them on the server.
  2. After 30 years in computer technical support, cleaning up old printer drivers and old Java gives the best jump in performance over most everything else you can do to tune up an old pc! These days we are replacing printers pretty often and rarely replace the old printer with the same type of printer. In fact, most of the time I see users replacing their printers with a completely different manufactures printer! The problem is that the old printer drivers, if not properly removed, cause performance problems. In order to properly remove a printer the user not only must remove the printer and the applications installed with the printer but there is one more step that even most administrators are not aware of. That is removing the drivers themselves. Control panel, Printers, File, Server Properties, Drivers tab. If an old driver is listed it should be removed. NOTE: If the printer has not yet been removed it will not allow you to remove the driver. In other words, if your kids use a different login then you then you have to go to each user and remove the printer first, then return to this screen to remove the driver! What a pain! I would love to see ccleaner offer an option to remove printers from ALL the users then the driver from windows as well. This would be nice for businesses with print servers as well. Print servers and workstations printer drivers often become out of sync. If the print server sees that the driver on the workstation doesn't match the one on the server it automatically downloads the newer driver to the workstation. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, the print servers sometimes do this EVERYTIME the users print! Microsoft suggest removing the printer driver from the workstation altogether then try again, however, manually cleaning up an old printer driver is nearly impossible to do manually! Invariably, the printer server will just simply start downloading the drivers again every time the workstation prints. Please, consider an option to cleanup old printer drivers.
  3. I have been using ccleaner for more than 5 years and the only time I have had a problem with it was the first time I used it and check-marked everything! Fortunately, I learned from my mistake and was brave enough to continue using this wonderful program! However, I still worry about my end users. As a consultant, I often install it and use it on my end users computers but worry that if my users try to use they too may shoot themselves in the foot as I did! In googling "problems caused by ccleaner" I see that 99% of the problems appear to be self inflicted by users using the registry cleaner options that are by default not check-marked. I would like to recommend that the developers of ccleaner consider moving these options to an "Advanced" options button. When the user clicks on this advanced options button they should be warned that these options should only be used by people with a complete understanding of the options and that these options have the potential to create serious problems if not used properly. I realize that it is noted here and there but I think that moving them out of the normal checklist would not make them as tempting to use!
  4. I have been using ccleaner for more than 5 years and have never had any problems with it. I would like to recommend that if ccleaner doesn't find applicaitons such as google toolbar installed that it remove it from the registry so that the windows stops trying to load the update service. The "information" below appears in the application log over and over, even when the google application is installed correctly and continues even after the application (in this case google toolbar) is uninstalled properly.
