  1. Is the hard drive light staying on steadily, or is it going out regularly? Is if off more than on? I am curious to find out if you are having the same issue that I am.
  2. Well, here's a "bug" of sorts: the program spends more time thinking about what file to move next than it does actually moving the files. I am puzzled immensely by this, as I would expect that a computer that can calculate 16.7 million digits of Pi in 3.8 seconds could figure out what file to move next in less time than that, but sometimes there is no disk activity while D is running for upwards of a second, then just a quick blip, and another wait. When a large file is being moved, the disk stays busy, but then it goes right back to thinking only. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that if it takes 500ms to figure out what to do next after each and every file move, it will take a very long time to defragment most hard drives. Is there any way to tighten this down? 640GB Samsung, Vista SP2
  3. S.M.A.R.T. can be enabled on the drive after the fact by software. I am VERY curious as to why you have it turned off in the BIOS. It is a good idea to have it turned on in the BIOS so that if one of the items reaches failing status, you are notified immediately.
  4. I have experienced similar issues, but in a much less severe situation. I have a machine with a 640GB hard drive 19% full, and I am frustrated with the low I/O. I would expect that the CPU could keep the hard drive busy, but this is not the case, apparently. I DO have a fairly demanding set of instructions: move all files over 1MB of certain types to the end of the drive, but I would expect that a computer that can calculate 16.7 million digits of Pi in 3.8 seconds could easily keep track of what files to put where without excessive CPU load. I agree that CPU usage is inefficient; even if I set the process priority to "High" it never goes over 70%. The machine is dual-core. When I first ran defraggler, it was very fast. I suspect that in my case the algorithm for determining file placement (beginning vs. end) is getting in the way of efficient operation. However, it still kept the hard drive busy when I first turned that option on. Now it simply doesn't. I am puzzled to the extreme. That said, it's a great tool that I plan to keep in the drawer. If this were fixed, it'd be even better.
