  1. ... which is why you should submit the file to System Mechanic Support so that they can fix this FP.
  2. It's because most required Windows processes run as services, which is why they don't need to be launched from the Registry Run keys or the Startup folder
  3. What kind of Startup entry is it, and how did you delete it? Reinstalling the software in question would be one way.
  4. Also, let's not forget that "newer" is not necessarily better...
  5. Well, certain legitimate software also insert themselves in the Winsock stack, and that could cause trouble. In such a case you can run the "netsh int ip reset" command to restore the Windows defaults (Win XP, Vista), then reinstalll the software in question. http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=4785 http://searchwincomputing.techtarget.com/t...1193133,00.html
  6. Yes, but do remember that every time it detects a baddie it will not only clear out your Temp folder and the Downloaded Program Files folder, but it will also replace your Hosts file by the Windows default and reset the Winsock Stack. You need to think this over, and, if necessary, back up any custom Hosts file you may have. There have also been (albeit rare) instances of people losing their Internet Connectivity because of the Winsock cleanup. You can however uncheck any of these options in the BOClean program configuration.
  7. Well, both Ad-Aware and SpyBot still get updated on a regular basis and in view of the fact that both are freeware you could do worse than run a scan with either or both of them every now and then. After all, NO application's detection rate is 100% and nothing beats a layered defense.
  8. ... according to Kevin McAleavey: And it is also imperative to reboot after setup in order to allow the kernel driver to launch.
  9. This new version should be.
  10. I can empathize with that. It goes without saying that what security software you choose to run wil always remain a matter of personal preference, at least to a certain extent.
  11. I've been running BOClean since 2001, the last four years alongside Nod32, and I'm extremely happy with it. It has a huge malware database, updates are frequent, and customer service is excellent. It sits in the background scanning the memory and Registry for malware and it will end process on and delete malware that may have passed by your AV. IMHO it's a valuable addition to any Antivirus. (just my 2 cts of course...)
  12. ... and here's a FF extension. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2144
  13. You can use the Google Advanced Search Page: http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en (Domain > Only show results from following domain)
  14. Not sure whether we're talking about the same thing here. I thought the question was how to restore a CC reg. backup created by using the 'Issues' tool. What that does is back up the registry keys removed by CC to a regfile, which can then be restored using either of the methods mentioned. It is NOT a backup of the entire registry.
  15. Nope; double-clicking the regfile, or right-clicking and choosing 'Merge' from the context menu have exactly the same effect. They will add the contents of the regfile to the registry. It is the contents of a regfile itself that determine whether a key or value is being added, replaced or deleted, not the way in which you "merge" it.

    XP DLLs

Possibly because there's no use for it, like I originally assumed... Sorry, no further suggestions come to mind offhand.

    XP DLLs

Well, try this tweak, and see whether it will make a difference: http://www.xpmaximized.com/archives/unload...ssary-dlls.html

    XP DLLs

Windows XP does this automatically, whereas previous operating systems benefited by the "AlwaysUnloadDLL" tweak. If you're indeed running Win XP (or Vista), there's no need to undertake any action.
  19. At least it's good to see that a few bugs have been fixed (take for example O22s not displaying due to HT looking in the wrong place), and a couple of autostart locations added. It certainly successfully lists my O22's (a HT first...): And I also like the fact that it confirms the scan was run in Normal Mode. I agree with you on the Analyze button; we certainly don't want people to go analyzing their own logs without the help of someone knowlegeable...
  20. CWShredder and HT are really two different animals; CWShredder is now certainly a dead duck, but whereas a couple of years ago a dedicated CWS removal tool certainly made sense, these days such a large proportion of current malware can be considered to be CWS related, that it is really beyond the scope of any single removal tool. Trend is of course already targeting adware through its AV and AS solutions, so I can kind of understand why they decided to abandon CWShredder. Let's indeed hope they'll treat HT with a bit more respect.

  23. Nothing "fuzzy" about those result. Any AV will skip certain files that are in use by the operating system. As well, incidentally, as password protected archives. There's nothing wrong with your Nod32. Also, there's an official Nod32 board at Wilderssecurity; I suggest you also have a look there: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15
