  1. Yes, I am looking for the "freehand" outline. Would that feature allow you to outline an area of a photo, then copy and paste the freehand outline into another photo?
  2. Haven't tried Foobar but have been using Winamp for some time. I haven't heard anything better when used with the Enhancer 0.17 plug-in. Winamp is so customizable that I think there's a plug-in for anything. I've also loaded that Enhancer plug-in with Screamer Radio and it sounds amazing. One of my favorite site perusals over the years has been the Winamp plug-in site. Most of the better ones have been released several years ago and aren't up there anymore. Supposedly, you can't even discuss Streamripper anymore on their message boards. As for exploits, I've read about them, but I don't know if I've ever heard about anyone who had an actual experience. Perhaps someone can post a link with more info.
  3. I've used Irfanview as a quick indexing program and really like it for slideshows, too. Does anyone know if any of the others (Faststone, Xnview) allow you to "hand" outline for cropping or cutting? I know that they allow you to select square or rectangle portions of the photo, but I haven't seen the ability to select any portion you want using the mouse. I know that Paint Shop Pro can do it, and free programs such as Gimp and Paint.net can.
  4. How safe are these messenger clients? I haven't reloaded AIM, MIRQ or a torrent program since I read several years ago that they open ports and you have to carefully monitor them. I really became careful about 2 OS reinstallations ago. Just before I had a chance to disable my Windows messenger service, a spam message popped up advertising an anti-spyware program. The new OS was loaded for perhaps 5 minutes. It was also before I loaded a firewall, so that could have prevented it. You get wary of these programs when you run TCPview at the same time, and look at all those ports that are constantly opening and closing. I wouldn't mind IM'ing old friends who still use AOL. Is there any comparable function to Google Talk in these programs? How does the Google messenger client compare to the others? Do any of you take any additional security measures when using the above mentioned programs?
  5. I finally got around to using Jkdefrag and I also downloaded the JKdefragGUI rar file. I first unzipped the JKdefrag file from Kessel's com and ran that, thinking that the GUI was just an additional exe file that I could add later. What I didn't know was that the JKdefragGUI from http://www.emro.nl/freeware included the latest version of JKdefrag too! I compared the two uncompressed folders and noticed that the GUI program contains the following files which I'm going to just copy into the JKDefrag directory (ok, I know that I could just copy the entire GUI folder over as it has the same files, but I feel more comfortable using the files downloaded from Kessels.com. The GUI files I'm going to copy into the JKdefrag v3.7 directory are: emro.gif (probably unnecessary) JkdefragGUI.exe JKdefragGUI.ini jt.exe - this is an Microsoft task scheduling file from 1999 that seems to be included by Emro.nl Before I run the GUI, I'm going to do a Zsoft analysis to see what additional changes it makes.
  6. I'm not sure if you listened yet, but the stream was crystal clear last night. They're using an 32kbps mono ogg vorbis stream and it's excellent. I took my own advice from a previous thread, and installed Screamer Radio. What a great little program! Aside from having links to hundreds of cool stations, it allowed me to listen and simply record the stream. Today there will be plenty of interviews. The band plays later in the evening.
  7. As a fellow Beatle fan, I'm sure you know that these have been going on for over 30 years. They're held several times a year and tomorrow's is from New Jersey and continues through Sunday night. Last year they increased the kpbs stream. Follow the directions on this site. By tomorrow, you'll see links up there that are usually playable through Winamp. The interviews are terrific and Liverpool, the backup band, is excellent. This year they're going to experiment with uploading videos via torrent. Check out the archives on the site. 8. Have you looked at Extractnow? Supports ZIP, RAR, ISO, BIN, IMG, IMA, IMZ, 7Z, ACE, JAR, GZ, LZH, LHA, TAR, SIT archive formats Latest Version 4.38 (March 14th, 2007) Extractnow
  9. Any recommendations regarding codec packs? I was thinking of choosing between: K-Lite Mega Codec Pack: http://codecguide.com/download_mega.htm Combined CommunityCodec Pack - CCCP: http://www.cccp-project.net/ Cole 2k Media Pack: http://www.cole2k.net/?display=Codec-Pack-Advanced I have to decide what's best for decoding and encoding. I've used CCCP in the past and they have excellent support. I think it's more for game users, and I'm not much of a video game player. K-Lite loads too much, but I think their installer now allows for a customized install. I don't know much about the Cole 2k pack so perhaps someone hear can offer an opinion. Is codecguide.com the author of the K-lite pack? I know it's also offered on free-codecs.com which is a widely used site.
  10. Buy.com is one of the most legitimate online retailers. They've been around for quite a few years. Over the holidays they had some amazing sales using Google checkout. A friend picked up several new Western Digital 250 gig external hard drives for $80 each (with free shipping) after Google checkout. Creative Zen 512 mg mp3 players were $10 after rebate and Google checkout! I've never had a problem with rebates or their free shipping option. I ordered one item on a Tuesday afternoon a week or two before the holidays (free shipping), and received it on Wednesday morning! On most sites with "good deals" forums, the most quoted sites are Buy.com, Amazon, Newegg and Outpost (not necessarily in that order). Each one sends out a confirmation e-mail within seconds of your order, and the minute the item is shipped, you're sent a tracking number.
  11. I was looking at programs similar to Imagegrabber from http://www45.brinkster.com/antworkz, but that site appears to be down. I came across Imagegrab: http://paul.glagla.free.fr/imagegrab_en.htm It looks like a cool little utility: He also issues a freeware program that captures video and audio streams called "CaptureFlux" http://paul.glagla.free.fr/captureflux_en.htm Both programs are small, so you will need a codec pack installed, or load the necessary codecs individually. Has anyone had experience with these?
  12. As soon as I saw the giveawayoftheday.com heading, I immediately thought of asking someone to check that activate.exe file with Zsoft. Supposedly, what that exe file does is ensure that you can only load the program one time. What I don't understand is why they have to issue an exe file and not a registration code. The only questionable strings I see are those that have to do with Outlook and Windows Messaging. Personally I wouldn't download any file that needs an activation key unless it came from a familiar site. It's interesting that Siteadvisor still doesn't have any information on giveawayoftheday.com.
  13. I can understand if it's the only way to make a disk backup (although many programs have a simple diskcopy selection), or if you need it for compression purposes. If you're creating an ISO image file, that usually means that it's the same set of files and directories you want to copy and burn over and over again. Wouldn't it be the same thing to just copy all those files to one directory and copy said directory to a data DVD or data CD without creating the image files? In this way, you can take that disk and have any computer read it without having to burn it again or use an unzipping program. Another possibility, assuming you'll need these files in the future, is to save the folder (with the prices for 200 gig hd's being what they are, it's very cost efficient) and change the security permission so it can't be deleted. I can't recall ever having the need to create an ISO image for the purpose expressed here. The only image file I create is using Norton Ghost or Acronis to back up drive partitions.
  14. Just one question. Why do you want to create an iso image of your data rather than simply copying all the files to a DVD or CD as a UDF data disk? The payware programs allow for that so there must be a freeware program that does it.
  15. You can analyze the upgrade if you have control of the upgrade procedure. Programs that perform automatic upgrades won't give you the chance to analyze before the upgrade. You have to ensure that you've set every program you have to manually upgrade, so that you can run Zsoft Uninstaller or Total Uninstall before the upgrade starts.

    Router

I was thinking of getting a new router a year ago and looked into the one mentioned in this thread. If I remember correctly, it's a NAT router. Does it have a built in firewall? Does anyone know why many of the techie forums around the net recommend the Linksys BEFSR41? Perhaps because it's wired, but can't you use the Linksys WRT54G as a wired router as well as a wireless? Isn't there also WRT54Gs?
  17. Play around with Zsoft Uninstaller for a bit. Even if you don't use it to uninstall, I'm sure you'll be impressed when looking the at the log files it creates when you use it to analyze an install. I've been using it and if I ever think there's a bug, I post it to the forum and the author responds very quickly. Programmers like this should get grants and help from Microsoft. A registry uninstaller is essential, as most programs leave residue all over the registry and in some instances, the OS directory. The one thing these programs can't do is uninstall additional strings and files that have been created by automatic upgrades, or at least I think they can't.
  18. What a great site! Thanks for posting. Everyone should bookmark it. He's put all the most important security links in one site.
  19. If Microsoft was really serious about speeding up the bootup procedure and surfing the net with ultimate security, they would have improved upon Windows 2000 rather than issuing a bloated program like Windows XP, or looked at Linux to see how an interface can be designed without fancy graphics. Even Windows Media Player has to be configured along with its rights in one's firewall to ensure it's not contacting the net every minute or so. Does any experienced user really care about the graphics? All I want is a fast, secure OS. For graphics I can rely on the 3rd party software programs. Instead of constantly issuing new OS which have bugs and holes that have to be plugged, how about issuing the best free antivirus and anti-malware security programs to secure an OS which has never been as safe or stable as Apple's OS? I don't want to get into which is better, because as a techie, I know it's alot cheaper to upgrade a Windows or Linux based PC (and much easier to build one), than the proprietary Apple. Much of the stability of Apple's OS is because of the comparatively few programs (especially freeware) available, thus ensuring that dll's aren't conflicting all over the place. Very often, I'll talk to an Apple user and they'll tell me they don't have the software to open a file that's been sent to them.
  20. Is SpywareTerminator a firewall, too? If so, can that part be deactivated if you run another firewall such as ZA?

    Software

You don't mention what operating system you're using. Reinstall the software (as suggested by XPSP2) and check the Brother site to see if there's any software/driver updates. If they have forums, post a similar question there. I don't see why a program such as C-Cleaner which cleans the temp files of the Documents and Settings directory should have any effect on a multifunction unit's program files. I use an HP scanner/fax/copier laserjet printer and have never had a problem with registry cleaners.
  22. Did you ever use Spybot's resident progam, "Teatimer"? I've found it quite effective and it always catches registry and BHO changes. Others like Winpatrol for that. I don't think it could hurt to still run Ad-Aware as it's free anyway. Lavasoft is going to be testing a major update to the program next month. Do you use the free or pro version of SuperAntispyware? The free version is not a resident program while Spyware Terminator provides real-time scanning and is freeware. Currently, I have AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 running, but if I read that Spyware Terminator is better, I would uninstall one for the other. Has any magazine reviewed these yet? The class of the field is supposed to be the payware programs - PC Tools' Spyware Doctor and Webroot's Spy Sweeper. I know Spy Sweeper is very hard on a CPU. My feeling is that several of the freeware programs do the job of Spy Sweeper.
  23. I just loaded AVG's free Anti-spyware program and I see from other forums and newsgroups, many recommend Spyware Terminator because of its HIPS detection ability. Of course, the one drawback for many is that its publisher is Crawler.com, which is or was a known adware/spyware site. Spywarewarrior.com however removed it from their list of rogue anti-spyware, and along with Wilders seem to view it very favorably. Comments?
  24. How does hphosts compare with the Bluetack hosts files which is highly recommended on some of the security forums? http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php...at&cat_id=3 I currently load the MVPS Hosts file using HostsXpert, and between this, SiteAdvisor, Spyware Blaster, Spyguard, AVG Anti-Spyware, Teatimer from Spybot S&D, and IE Spy-ad, would a larger HOSTS file really add much more? It it's blocking Softpedia and Spyware Terminator just because they link to questionable sites or have adware downloads on their site, I don't think it's adding much.
  25. Usually you can just log out, and then log in with the old username and subsequent reboots will log you in automatically. The easiest way to manage your log in is to download a great little tool from Microsoft (can you get any safer?). http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/dow...g/NTTweakUI.asp Once you install Tweakui 1.33, open start-settings-control panel-Tweakui. Go to the Logon tab and configure it for anything you want. Check all the other tabs. You'll be amazed at how easy it is to change your overall configuration (location of IE favorites, Outlook Express folders, etc.).
