  1. I'm also haviing a problem running Chrome Version 32.0.1700.72 m., Every time I run Ccleaner with the default setting for Chrome, I get a message that my preferences are corrupt and lose my extensions. It's also discussed here: http://productforums.google.com/d/msg/chrome/zmgiVCv9X0A/9QFFlVb8Y9kJ
  2. I sometimes wonder about all the Firefox and Opera add-ons we all like to play around with. Are they ever tested before they're placed on the official sites? The same goes for the greasemonkey scripts.
  3. I've had problems with ver 1 and above on an old computer that's still running Windows 2000 sp4. It crashes when trying to play any video files. There's no problem with audio. I prefer the older versions anyway because they have the Shoutcast utility.
  4. When I just installed the slim build v3.04.1389 of Ccleaner, I didn't see the option box for changing the default installation folder. I've installed and uninstalled older versions of Ccleaner over the years and this is the first time I didn't see the option to change the program directory.
  5. In it's earliest beta days (before version 1), Vdownloader was a pretty clean program with an exe file that could be easily unpacked. Even later versions unpacked with ease. They're now using a version of Inno Setup that's more difficult to extract. According to the Installer's Hall of Shame, it now comes with the Ask Toolbar and an ebay shortcut. http://www.calendarofupdates.com/updates/index.php?showtopic=16109&st=240&p=101893entry101893 Videohelp.com now has it classified as adware: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/VDownloader
  6. I just downloaded the Fanboy list, opened it in Notepad and noticed that Fanboy's list has these symbols shaped like a box before each url and the file isn't in list form. However, if I copied his list to Wordpad, the file was in list form and the asterisk wildcards appeared, and the box symbols disappeared. I then copied the Wordpad list and pasted the items in my Opera urlfilter.ini file, in the exclude section.
  7. A usenet poster compiled these great lists with links to the author's sites. I've archived it by saving the page as a MHT file. Alternatively, the link could be bookmarked. 9. Considering that there's no Adblock + for Opera and Admunch is payware, does anyone have a good list to add to the urlfilter.ini file for Opera? There's a program here called Adsweep that supplies a javascript file, but I haven't tried it yet: http://adsweep.org/ Alternatively, you can download the author's adblock list for Opera here: http://www.adblocklist.com/ He provides a urlfilter.ini file. I just download it, open it in notepad, and copy the blockist to the "exlude" section of my old urlfilter.ini file. This site also provides a small list that works very well, thanks to the wildcards in some of the entries. http://blogote.com/2009/ideas/browser-idea...m-webpages.html My Opera browser used to block most ads, but for some reason I've been seeing alot of Google ads and adclick boxes on many sites. I must have unchecked or removed something and can''t remember what it was. Maybe it was the trial version of Admunch I installed. When it ran, Opera was great, but when I closed it, I saw alot of ads using the Opera browser. However, ever since I copied the adlists provided above, my pages load much faster and I no longer see 95% of the ads!
  10. How does Speccy differ from the excellent SIW, Everest or the Belarc Advisor? Reviews and links can be found here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-...ion-utility.htm
  11. Thanks for the explanation, TheOdds. In answer to previous comments, you can download the setup file here (slim build): http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds Use 7zip to open the exe file. Most clean programs will use a simple packer for their installer that can be opened by 7zip. Sometimes you then have the option of just copying the software files to a directory and running it without installing. Ccleaner takes care of that with their portable build.
  12. After using the slim build of CCleaner for years, I just downloaded the latest version which is 2.24. I decided to unzip the archive using 7zip and noticed that in the $PLUGINSDIR is a file called system.dll. Is this file installed and if so, where? I don't see it in my current Ccleaner folder and a scan of my OS and programs partitions show system.dll files but those are associated with MS Framework. When upgrading to a later version, can I: a - just unzip an exe archive and replace the Ccleaner.exe file, or b - reinstall the new CCleaner program over the old one, or c - save my ini file, uninstall the old version and install the new version? I always seem to use method c.
  13. Is it just me or does Opera create directories in three different places? The first one is the obvious one which is the program files folder. My install also created: a) Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Opera\Opera This contains the dat files b_Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera This contains the cache
  14. I never thought of posting this topic until I read a post in another thread that stated Ccleaner looks at the C: drive for the installation. I know it cleans my Firefox and IE browser files and they're on a different partition (I have to manually add the cache directory for Opera). Is there anything I need to do to the ini file for an OS install that's not on the C: partition?
  15. The following can be found under: 6. USE OF SERVICES Opera Turbo: When Opera Turbo is enabled, it will request normal Web content through an Opera Software proxy server. Opera Turbo will exclude Web pages located on an intranet or by using secure connections (HTTPS). The browsing experience may change due to increased Web page loading speeds when using Opera Turbo. We reserve the right to change, impose prices for, limit usage of and/or discontinue the Opera Turbo service at any point in time . Opera Unite: Opera Unite is service whereby Opera provides users with a Web browser communication platform through a bundled Web server to share content, collaborate, and interact with others. Certain features of Opera Unite allow you to post and send content and/or links to User Generated Content stored on your computer, which can that can be viewed and/or accessed by others. Opera Software ASA Postboks 2648 St. Hanshaugen NO-0131 OSLO NORWAY From what I've read elsewhere, Opera Turbo is mainly for dialup connections. Does it help with the speed of broadband connections at all? I'm not sure I would want to browse through their proxy servers, though. Where do you find Opera Unite? Was this included with Opera 10? I've looked at the Opera Help and it says that it's in "Panels" but I don't see it there. Isn't this a just way to set up a p2p network within your browser? With the right security, I can see this being very advantageous for businesses in exchanging MS Office documents.
  16. I closed my DNS Client at the turn of the century when I first started using a hosts file. I'll take your advice and try both again, but the last time I used HPHOSTS, I found myself constantly going in to search and remove blocked sites. Remember that if "oldapps.com" is blocked, then there's also a listing for "www.oldapps.com" that has to be removed. I've been using HostsXpert from Funkytoad, but that program does not seem to be able to dl the HPHOSTS file anymore, so I'll try Hostsman. Are you also running Javacool's Spyware Blaster and/or Zoned Out? I'm not sure how often IE-Spyad and ZonedOut update anymore. and I rarely use Internet Explorer for browsing these days, so I haven't been checking it for updates/upgrades. I haven't used Spyware Blaster in awhile. Since I started using Avira Antivir Premium and set it for high heuristics I haven't come close to downloading malware/spyware. I do regular scans of the registry with Autoruns and look at key tabs, check Process Explorer, view TCPview from time to time to see if any foreign IP addresses and ports are open, and I run Hijackthis every so often to see if anything has been added. All this is in addition to Avira rootkit and AV scans on a regular basis.
  17. I usually create a directory called Browsers and place Firefox and Opera in them during install. CCleaner had no problem finding Firefox as it appears in the Applications window, but Opera 10 Beta is not recognized. I did the same for previous versions of Opera and CCleaner recognized them even though they weren't in the default directory.
  18. Is FEBE an add-on that backs up your files by uploading them or can you back up to your hard drive. I checked out the Thunderbird link and Zone Alarm blocked Box.net as spyware. Does FEBE use Box.net in any way? I found this cached post from ZoneAlarm discussing malware hosted by Box.net : http://74.125.113.132/search?q=cache:8FWU-...mp;client=opera and this odd post about Box.net that goes off in all directions (this was the best Yahoo answer yet! : http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qi...11140610AAEMmvA
  19. As many of you probably already know, Firefox 3 changed the way that bookmarks are handled. I discovered this when I noticed that my bookmarks.html file date never changed after upgrading to version 3. Instead, bookmarks are now saved to a file called "places.sqlite". According to this site: http://www.lytebyte.com/2008/06/19/underst...arks-are-saved/ the best way to handle Firefox bookmarks is to install the Sqlite Manager: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5817 Another alternative is found here: http://www.lytebyte.com/2008/06/19/how-to-...-bookmarkshtml/ You can sync places.sqlite and bookmarks.html by typing "about:config", search for "browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML", change its value to "true" The only reason I can see the use of the latter method is if you want to import or export your bookmarks from bookmarks.html rather than places.sqlite or you want to be able to open the bookmarks.html file in a browser or other reader. I'm not sure why they changed their method. One poster's comments on the first link above gave me a good chuckle when he stated that:
  20. Thanks. I can't believe I didn't try that. When was the right click feature added? Was that in the early versions, too? Am I dreaming or was there an option in settings at one time for detailed results?
  21. In another thread a poster wrote that his HOSTS file was blocking a site I recommended called Oldapps.com. It made me recall my experience with the HPHOSTS file, (which I assumed was the one he was using). I used to merge it with the MVPS HOSTS file and found that: 1) the two of them together made for too large a HOSTS file and slowed my browsing to a crawl 2) HPHOSTS consistently blocked some sites which are pretty safe. If you browse their list, you'll be amazed at some of the sites it blocks. It's a good and worthy HOSTS file, and it's better to be safe than sorry, but I think it overdoes the security just a bit. Personaly I"m currently just using the MVPS HOSTS file with HostsXpert from Funkytoad.com as my manager of choice. As a poster commented in another thread, Oldapps.com has an OK Siteadvisor rating. In addition, I've checked and it also has a "Trustworthy" green rating from Web of Trust. I think that if a file download site hosts any file which has ever had a reported problem, HPHOSTS blocks the site. Zone Alarm Pro's spyware function continuously would block Tinyurl.com until I added it as an exception! Update: I just downloaded latest version of HPHOSTS file. It's over 3 mb! That's almost 6x the size of the MVPS HOSTS file! That's some serious domain scanning going on when visiting each website! I opened the file with Notepad, and sure enough it blocks Oldapps.com. It even blocks Freedownloadmanager.org, which also has a "trustworthy" WOT rating. However, I must add that the HPHosts site is very impressive in that there's some nice utilities for downloading, some good links provided, and the HOSTS files has updates and signatures provided. In addition, when searching for a domain such as Oldapps.com to see why it's blocked, much information is provided with links to many reports: http://hosts-file.net/default.asp?s=oldapps.com HPHOSTS gives Oldapps.com their EXP rating which means: EXP - sites engaged in or alleged to be engaged in the exploitation of browser and OS vulnerabilities as well as the exploitation of gray-matter As I stated before, I think that if a site has ever hosted a file for download that was reported to be malware or adware, HPHOSTS blocks it. One look at Siteadvisor's rating here http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/oldapps.com and you can see that there were files hosted that triggered the HPHOSTS alarm. HPHOSTS even links to the Google report: http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnos...s.com&hl=en What is the current listing status for oldapps.com? This site is not currently listed as suspicious. What happened when Google visited this site? Of the 51 pages we tested on the site over the past 90 days, 0 page(s) resulted in malicious software being downloaded and installed without user consent. The last time Google visited this site was on 2009-08-27, and suspicious content was never found on this site within the past 90 days. Does anyone know how often HPHOSTS reviews this list and removes sites that are clean? Their HOSTS file seems quite large, so it must not be done that often.
  22. What HOSTS file are you using? It's probably HPHOSTS, because I used to merge it with the MVPS HOSTS file and found that it blocked too many clean sites. See the thread I just posted regarding the HPHOSTS file. http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=23859
  23. I can't seem to find the option that allows me to see the files that were recently cleaned. All I currently see is a summary. Wasn't there an option in earlier versions for a detailed listing of all the files cleaned, or does the ini file have to be edited?
  24. There's also: http://www.oldapps.com/ Sometimes Softpedia.com and Fileforum (http://fileforum.betanews.com) will have a listing of all the older versions available for download to the right of the current download.
  25. I just upgraded to CCleaner 2.2.968 - slim build (completely uninstalled prior version). When I noticed that CCleaner cleaned my system very quickly, I knew there was a problem, because it usually takes awhile to delete the large Opera cache files. When I saw the details list, no Opera files were listed. I didn't even see Opera listed as a program in the Applications window. I'm running Opera 10, Beta 3, build 1699. In the interim, I've added the subdirectories that should be cleaned: Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera\cache Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Opera\Opera\opcache
