  1. Can anyone advise if there is any advantage or speed gain using a router and network card instead of a USB modem. Or do you know any website where this has been discussed.

  2. Andy,

many thanks for all that and I'll work my way through this asap, although I'm afraid work will get in the way for most of the day... My one query at this point is whether this should go on the HijackThis forum rather than CCleaner, I'm not sure I see the advantage in that, the history is here. I admit my description 'CCleaner failing' isn't very descriptive, but that's all I knew at the time. This malware is certainly targeting specific applications, particularly CCleaner, as well as HijackThis and Comboscan at least, but ignoring others (don't like to write their names in case 'they' improve their malware... not that I'm getting paranoid or anything...)

Thanks again, I'll get started on this later today...

The reason Andy asked you to put all further logs into the Hijackthis forum, is because you will only get help from the 'appointed Malware experts' rather than lots of diverse ideas from other well meaning members or visitors.

Please follow Andys advise he is among the best of the Malware fighters.

    Mike

  3. Open up the older version of SAS - open preferences - at the bottom left corner you will see an option to update program click on this and check your system tray for message. It should update you version to the latest.

  4. No, you can choose to hide updates on the microsoft site, I believe if you choose to hide the update it won't try to install. ;)

Thats correct, except after a few weeks I get the usual notice that updates are avaiable, and you can guess its being offered again. I have kept a copy of the removal tool. So if it does find its way back it gets zapped again.

  5. I can unzip it on my old E drive, but it won't run nor can I move the .exe to the desktop... as soon as I do a 'mouseover' the filename in explorer it bounces me out and shows wbjrwesa.txt in taskmgr... bother...

Have you tried re-naming HJT on your other PC and then transfer the file over

  6. Enlarged view as requested. 360 appears to me to me to be NIS207 plus Ghost and a web back up service. which used to be seperates bundled together under a new GUI. It is not something that I would go for. However, if you did want to test NIS then of all the variations they have come up with I would suggest NIS 2007.

You'll probably be glad to know I'll not mention product bashing again. Symantec sure wont give me a rebate for defending their products. I just dont think it's necessary.

End of story as far I am concerned

  7. Many people may have Norton and get infected but like all security software it isn't bulletproof, not only that malware can disable anti-malware protection. With that said I won't touch another Norton app because they install way too much, and in my opinion cost too much, therefore my system won't be subjected to it ever again.

I must say the name of it doesn't invoke anything security minded other than the Norton name itself. Norton 360 "can it run in circles," something like Norton 360 Internet Protection, etc., would be more eye catching.

You are way out of date on resource usage as far as NIS2007

  8. Is anyone using/used the new norton 360?

I ask because while browsing download.com this was on the front page:

    http://reviews.cnet.com/Norton_360/4505-36...11.html?tag=lst

Mercifully light? comprehensive security and performance tool?

I'm not in the mood to infect my own computers with norton at the moment. :(

I would never tell someone to use it, but are they actually cleaning up their crappy program?(sorry, but it seems like 90% of the really badly infected hijackthis logs are from norton users.)

Nothing works properly if you use out of date software. NIS 2007 is excellent. Its long overdue that you stopped all this product bashing Ridgley

  9. Used Norton 2005 & then 2006 until very recently.

Still got this sitting on the shelf, sealed in the box.

Since I changed to Avast Antivirus, and a not yet decided firewall, my 3.06Ghz processor actually performs the way it should. You would think a fire had been lit under my computers a**e.

But each to their own Mike, whatever works for you.

    :)

I have used NIS both corporate and home for years, without problem. However, NIS 2007 is a new approach and very light on resource. But as you say each to their own.

  10. NIS2007 gets a full stealth
