  1. I like to get things taken care of early and when I am able.  Absent the remarkable skills of folks like kroozer and others to present beautiful graphics I can only come forward with words.  I want to wish each and everyone and their significant others in this great family a joyous, happy and most of all safe holiday season.  I also would like to add my deepest thanks and appreciation for all the help you have given me over the past years leaving me greatly indebted.  Take care and best wishes, Warlock

  2. Hi MTA and everyone else.  Due to other issues I'm just now getting around to reading all the posts.  You must have read my mind MTA, it's truly "Damn-where do I start?".  Just when I finished with one ordeal another surfaces.  I've opened Pandora's Box again. Derek said he was glad I didn't use the hammer.  When I whined and cried until I got one of these systems I wish someone had hit me with that hammer.  This is a mess and nothing is attributed to you wonderful folks.  It's the result of too many fingers in this computer ranging from Avast support to the three clowns who have tickled the keyboard like Liberace until I don't know what I've got. They insist on putting their own personality into my machine instead of leaving things alone or at least explaining things to me in vivid detail.  Listen, I love you folks, you've worked so hard to help me but already I can see we're going to have to simplify this even more so this dumb old man can accomplish this task.

I know I'm going to have to decide what was said about backing up what I simply cannot live without.  I'll have to open up the folders I have under the desktop shortcuts and see how much space is taken up to ship stuff over to the external flash drives. There appears to be some duplication and I don't know how to avoid this.  Also, the Macrium thing and formatting operations have me confused already.  How I wish we could go remote and just let me sit back and put it in the pros hands.  I hate this but could you be thinking of how we can hurdle some of these land mines and I'll try my best to fumble around here and see what I can do.  For instance I opened up one folder and saw that one can send data to a certain drive and if that would work after the devices are all set up to receive information perhaps I could use that route.  Just a random thought while I look around for my life vest.  Thanks so much and eternal gratefulness.  Warlock

  3. Hi Andavari,

Glad you got a hoot.  While I've never considered being a commodian I try to insert some humor ever now and then.  Have defused some serious situations with that approach.  If I can elicit a grin, smile or laugh and make someone's day a little better then that makes me feel good. On what follows, wasn't sure where to post this so I'll put this in the trusty hands of Moderators.

O.K., this is the Captain, all hands on deck for ship's status.  I owe all you folks a report of the defragging effort a few days ago.  Windows Defrag ran its course and got the hard drive clean as a whistle.  Confirmed that by analyzing with Defraggler and got the same results.  Thanks so much to all of you for sticking with me during this laborious task.  I hope I didn't wear everyone out with this but how do you all feel about working on the backup problem.  MTA's post on 12-14-2013 continues to haunt me and I have the feeling that a death sentence is near.

Of course I would ideally cherish backing everything up but just don't have the overall means as I stated earlier.  Could we improvise, adapt, overcome somehow?  Bearing in mind others have done everything concerning this machine; everything.  Tried to study up to no avail.  I have only a Smartdisk Firelite 30GB Mod USBFL30P given to me.  It;s empty but needs formatting, HUH? I have a 16GB Flash Drive Memory Stick on which a backup was done around May, 2013 also stored in a folder on the hard drive but have no idea what is on it as the wizard just set it up and left town.  Have three 1GB Sticks same condition.  Do not have pictures, music, etc. so only data saved from articles, how to do's.  If I could somehow save externally, preferring the drag and drop method what I would like, perhaps I could at least salvage some data before we go belly up.  System operating files such as drivers, applications, who knows.

Would you good folks think about this and share your thoughts on how to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear?  If you would let me know what information you need to evaluate please drop me a line.  I have Windows XP Professional 32 bit, SP3, Firefox v26.0  I have a 75GB Hard Drive © with about 29GB used and a 5GB (Q) Drive with about 3.5GB used and no idea what this is for certain, something about recovery from one of the wizards.  Mission: Impossible  Thanks again so much, all take care.

  4. Hi Everyone,

Dear Hazel, after pondering all the great feedback from you good folks I think your latest suggestion is the most plausible.  I  have gone bonkers trying to comprehend the Exclude instructions on Defraggler.  Believe I'll go this route and hopefully put this to rest.  Thanks so much.

    Dear MTA,

You're right on track with what you said about the preservation of precious data but a dilemma still exists.  You really got to my funnybone with your suggestions for obtaining funding for a back up.  I looked into visiting the local bloodbank and also selling my body for scientific research and organ donation but the entities told me they don't pay a dime and I'm too old and ugly. Can you believe it, not a dime to save someone's life or advance.  However, there might be one avenue to consider.  Many of my acquaintances have told me that I'm so full of you know what and if I can find a market for that I can buy the finest computer system on earth and even pay people to run it for me.  My troubles would be OVAH! LOL Thanks so much to you also.

You folks are all tops so take care and I'll stay in touch with the greatest folks on earth. Yours always,

  5. Hi Hazel, to answer your question first of all I did no setups of any kind to include Defraggler.  All that's in this machine was done by a former friend.  I think when I reported inability to access Windows Defraggler the other day was either a result of a hiccup from a really messed up machine or perhaps these little fingers.  Before coming on I tried to bring up Windows Defrag and it came right up. Yes, the block you referred to was checked so I did discover that and apparently I created a problem that didn't exist as both are working.

Are you leaning in the direction that I use Windows Defrag as opposed to Defraggler?  I am about half way through the process as I explained in my post yesterday 12-12-2013 and I saw where on 11-09-2013 Derek cautioned about switching from one to another. If I continue with Defraggler I would appreciate your best advice under the circumstances and wonder about my question on assistance with the Exclusion feature to cut down on hard drive stress and my stress for future defragging. Besides, watching Defraggler is a break from t.v. LOL Seriously,  I must admit I'm starting to get a bit confused and would be grateful for guidance.  Thanks so much for continuing concern on my behalf.  Warlock

  6. Hi Login, yes I have the Windows XP disk, can see it from I'm at.  Were you thinking in terms of an uninstall and reinstall with your question?  If so, before I can even think about doing that I still have to solve the problem of not having the money, external flash and most of all knowledge to accomplish this.  Thanks for your ongoing concern and let me know your thoughts.  Warlock

  7. Hi Everyone,

Need some help asap.  Finally got the courage screwed up to work on this nagging issue yesterday 12-11-2013.  Could not bring up Windows Defrag for some reason so had to use Defraggler.  Brought up Safe Mode tapping on F8 like a woodpecker but could not display all readings on Speccy to monitor temps but displayed hard drive during the process.  Ran Analyze and found a mess 27% fragmented and would take all day.  So I poured two bottles of Fleet and started the process.  Worked better part of the day until I was wore out so I aborted hopefully without messing something up with 41% accomplished, remaining time 13 hours, leaving 684 fragmented files (6.1%), 8289 total fragments, 18% fragmented yet to do.  I can't spend so much time at this still with the desire to do a thorough cleaning and need help desperately in the hopes of improving performance on this machine. I have Windows XP Professional, 34bit, SP3, Firefox v26.0

I've tried to comprehend the Excluded portion of Defraggler to no avail. I need to reduce the load on an aging hard drive.  I have a few shortcuts on my desktop and underneath are numerous files of just plain data, I'm a packrat. There are files where I've saved and identical yellow ones.  I need to know how to drop these large chunks into Exclude but unsure of how to enter it correctly. Do I simply type in the file address completely and correctly and where can I obtain the name.  A simple, step by step method would not only be mandatory but greatly appreciated.  I want to be careful and not exclude something critical and I'm certain I'm not listing all that need to be entered or not entered i.e. applications and the like. I hope this explains my dilemma adequately and if not please contact me for clarification. I'm confident the pros on here can solve this.  Thanks in advance and take care. Yours always, hoping for another victory.

  8. Hi Andavari, Ah, the sweet taste of victory.  Just when I was about to use my skills to go through all the steps I checked and found Adobe had already installed the new version 11.9.900.172 as posted by Hazel for me.  Thankful for automatic updates and also your valued input.  Now if my friends will keep an eye peeled over on Defraggler and my posts beginning 11-09-2013  Have a good one all.  Warlock

  9. Hey folks, just happened to be in the neighborhood and saw this.  I jumped on board because I'm a blue ribbon, card-carrying government watcher and critic.  Just fired a rocket at these clowns through one of my activist websites.  I'm certain you're all well versed in the constant surveillance going on and it's getting worse.  As we speak some undead organism is probably getting his/her cookies on a monitor screen all in the interest of national security.  They're the terrorists.  I could rattle on all day but I'll limit it to my two cents worth.  Got to go put my flag up and hope I don't get frostbite.  Have a good day and thanks for taking a stand.  Yours always,

  10. HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!

Everybody break out the party hats and kazoos.  I am pleased to announce that after a long, protracted, drawn-out effort I was just now able to get the Adobe Flash v 11.9.900.152 successfully installed and verified.  Your suggestions worked perfectly.  Thanks and deepest gratitude to my good friends who assisted me in this matter.  A tip of the hat and a bow to all.  Thanks and take care. Your indebted friend,

  11. Hi Everyone,

Still struggling with defragging issue.  Have searched around and read insructions until eyes bleeding. I came upon the Exclude portion and was wondering if some good folks heavy on this could help.  I've tried to delete some unnecessary info to reduce load on the h.d. I feel if I can exclude things like a file on my desktop such as the last backup, numerous phone numbers, applications and some other junk I've saved that Defraggler wastes time while defragging which strains the h.d. and causes overheating and I have to shut down to cool.  Could someone give me simple, step by step, easy to comprehend instructions on how to use the Exclude and this perhaps would ease the burden. I don't want to mistakenly use this feature and exclude something vital.  Hope this is clear and if I'm redundant with this I apologize but this is a nagging, long term issue.  Thanks so much in advance to all.

  12. To my good friends, thanks so much for your responses.  I'll try to accomplish this today after taking care of some other tasks. Will keep you posted and hopefully get rid of this headache.  Take care, you're the greatest.  Warlock

  13. Hi Andavari, sorry about the somewhat belated response, had lot going on.  I've tried everything to get the Adobe Flash Player v 11.9.900.152 to replace v 11.9.900.117 still installed,  going directly to the site and all it does is go to step 2 of the installation and just stalls.  I'm sick of this thing.  Is it really vital as I understand it's mostly for gaming which I never do.  Can I just go to the Add/Remove and send it to its grave without causing any problems and move on to other issues?  Your cherished advice welcome.  Thanks, Warlock

  14. Hi mta, thanks for your input. I have XP also.  Think I'll give it a whirl as I have to do something about the slowness. Takes forever to bring something up and hopefully this will improve performance but before defragging I need to take some load off of an aging hard drive. Both Windows and Defraggler say it's time for an enema.  Still can't find someone who will back up pro bono and that's a must before anything serious is started i.e. a re-install of the OS.  A good neighbor gave me a 30G flash drive but I need a larger one as I have a 70G. They have been out of the computer business and were unable to offer any instructions but thoughtfulness counts.  There's just too much critical data in this thing between my files I've saved and the operating files.  If you run into a Computer For Dummies please let me know right away. Temps are doing good and after running for a while things seem to work better; strange.  If you change your mind about making a house call we can get you to into snow removal.  We got ten to twelve inches the past few days.  Thanks again old friend and take care.  Will keep you posted on whether a defeat or victory.  Warlock

  15. Hi Andavari, just having some wild, crazy thoughts on how to accomplish this without serious damage.  Maybe someone else that has done it can jump in.  Can I put you on the list to get this to use as a boat anchor?  Got a nasty winter storm here.  Thanks and take care.  Warlock

  16. Hope you folks aren't tired of me beating a dead horse but I was reviewing the posts on this issue.  mta stated an interesting suggestion that I'm considering.  I've gone into the Safe Mode just to work with my Avast support folks but that's it, they took it from there.  I was wondering if I do a Safe Mode does that essesntially take a load off the hard drive?  In other words less programs running if my thinking is close.  If it does then I may be able to do a defrag safely with my overheating problem.  Less strain on the H.D. which is probably aging should ease the pain of this issue. I would have to be able to get to my defrag programs and Speccy for monitoring temps though.  Any thoughts on this would be gratefully accepted as always in addition to an answer on my previous post above I believe on 11-05-2013.  Thanks again and I await eagerly your input.  Take care.  Your friend, Warlock

  17. Hi Everyone, still having a boat load of problems, snails pace in operating, script notices, etc.  Got some help from the paid Avast support and they connected and fixed some but still needs the hood ornament with a new car under it.  I'm going to take a shot at defragging to see if this helps this thing to run better.  The support team did a disk cleanup recently I should mention.  Defraggler reports 27% and Windows says it's time.  I think I'll try Hazel's post on 11-17-2013.  I saw where Derek on 11-09-2013 stated that this method starts all over when stopped.  With my heating problem in mind I was curious if once a portion of the hard drive is defragged is it cleaned and gone.  About the only way I can do this is to shut the machine off and back on to cool.  Hope this makes sense.  I promise to put the big hammer down until I hear back from you.  Thanks and take care.  Warlock

  18. Hi login, I'll see if what you describe happens but I need to get straight on Andavari's revision.  About Hazel's intructions, it gave me the current version installed which is 11.9.900.117 The wife just had to take my large hammer away from me as I'm getting weary of this crap.  Thanks so much and stay in touch. Warlock

  19. Andavari, a dumb question, can I just click on the link while here on the forum or should I open my browser Firefox 25.0.1 and type in the link and what about those periods included.  Glad I checked back on this as I was about to try the previous link you gave. Thanks old friend. Warlock

  20. Same to you LuLu, a little late in getting back.  I know where I'm going for next Thanksgiving and hopefully be where it's warmer.  Andavari can organize a ride share and be the Grand Marshal with his love of autos.  Excuse me while I work on that 21 pounder some more from our turkey day. Love to all. Warlock

  21. Hi login et al,  sorry been a little late in getting back.  Still putting out fires here, this thing is barely crawling.  I contacted the support folks at Avast and they hooked up with me and supposedly fixed the Adobe update issue but apparently were mistaken.  I still cannot get the update after trying everything.  Tried downloading from the Firefox Addon page and going directly to the Adobe website.  It downloads then when I run it it goes to Step 2 and just sits there.  It doesn't display a progress bar like most.  Is there any way I can check on the progress of a run?  I have Windows XP Professional 32 bit SP3.  Maybe if I can eventually get that new version of 11.9.900.152 to replace 11.9.900.117 I'm hoping that will cure this infernal scripting that occurs with Firefox v 25.0.1  Please let me know any thoughts you might have. Been having warnings regularly that my av is not working but is at the moment.  What else!   Thanks again and take care.  Warlock

  22. Before signing off I just wanted to take the opportunity to wish everyone that observes it a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday.  Included in giving thanks is to all those good friends and folks in this forum family who have given so much of themselves to helping others like myself.  I am truly indebted and forever grateful.  Your friend, Warlock

  23. Hi Login,

I gave all the great suggestions by you, Andavari and Hazel a shot and sure enough it sent me to the quicksand. I've been in touch with my Avast support and they said we can go remote and solve the Adobe and some other issues.  Sad it didn't fly but I'm so grateful for all of you trying to help.  I'm just dumb as a box of rocks with these things.  Thanks again and hope you all have a safe, happy Thanksgiving holiday.  Take care my friends.

  24. Hazel, I followed your instructions and sure enough I got to the Adobe icon. I clicked on it and it displayed that I have version 11.9.900.117 installed. When I went to the center and clicked on the new version needed 11.9.900.152 and ran it I got a message that only one run is allowed. Would what Andavari suggested help clean out this mess? Somebody out in cyberworld hates me. I knew this would blow up in my face not due to you or him of course. Warlock
